MURUGAPPAN ASNT LEV IL ET ASNT LEV IL ET ASNT LEV I ET. ‘Vibrant NDT Services Pvt Ltd DOC.Classification : Eddy Current Testing Version 1.0:Rev 0 ‘An 180 3001 : 2008 Certifed Company File Name :Eddy Current Tube Inspection Procedure ‘TITLE : EDDY CURRENT TESTING OF HEATER SCOPE ‘This procedure covers eddy current testing of heat exchanger tubes of diameter 16 mm and wall thicknesses 2.5mm Objective - To find out defects and wall thinning from inner diameter as well as from outer diameter side of the tube Stage of inspection - In service inspection PRINCIPLE In this technique two coils which are oppositely wounded are excited with alternating current which produces magnetic field around it. This magnetic field penetrates into the tube thickness which in turn generates eddy current into the tube thickness (as shown in fig. below). Whenever any flaw or discontinuity comes across the path of these eddy currents, their path gets deflected which in turn changes impedance of the coils. These changes in the impedance of the coils is measured and used to detect the defects within the tube thickness. With the help of reference calibration tube, sensitivity is established so that discontinuity and wall thinning equal to or greater than those in the reference blocks can be detected Impedance bridge coils, absolute/differential Conductive and nonferromagnetic tube material EDDY CURRENT TUBE INSPECTION PROCEDURE ‘Vibrant NDT Services Pvt Ltd DOC.Classification : Eddy Current Testing Version 1.0:Rev 0 ‘An 180 3001 : 2008 Certifed Company File Name :Eddy Current Tube Inspection Procedure ‘TITLE : EDDY CURRENT TESTING OF HEATER 3, REFERENCES ASME Section V: Article 1 - General requirements & Article 8 - Nondestructive Testing - Eddy Current Testing (ECT) examination method (2010 Edison) ‘ASME SE 426 - Standard practice for Electromagnetic (Eddy Current) examination of seamless and welded tubular products 4, METHOD. Eddy Current Testing with bobbin probes in differential (for discontinuity) and absolute (for wall Thinning) mode. Multiple simultaneous frequency injection technique 5. PERSONAL QUALIFICATION ‘The qualification of operator shall be at least NDT Level Il (Eddy Current Testing) According to ASME Written practice SNT TC-1A Equipment Make : OLYMPUS - Multiscan MS5800 Features : Four simultaneous frequencies per input which allows inspection speed up to.2 m/s Electronic probe balancing - No separate reference probe is required for absolute channel operation. 4ECT inputs and up to 64 multiplexed channels, Equipment Cal Equipment calibration interval shall not extend beyond the period of one year. ration EDDY CURRENT TUBE INSPECTION PROCEDURE ‘Vibrant NDT Services Pvt Ltd DOC.Classification : Eddy Current Testing Version 1.0:Rev 0 ‘An 180 3001 : 2008 Certifed Company File ame ‘Eddy Current Tube Inspection Procedure ‘TITLE : EDDY CURRENT TESTING OF HEATER Calibration interval for equipment frequency Equipment frequency is needed to be calibrated at a regular interval during inspection process or after any other incident which interrupt the inspection process. 1. Calibrate equipment frequency at the starting of the shift and ending of the shift 2. Calibrate the frequency at a regular interval of 4 hours during inspection. 3. During inspection whenever inspection person is changed, calibrate the frequency 4, Whenever any component of the equipment is needed to be changed then after changing the component, calibration is must 5. After repair or power interruption calibration is needed Probes Differential & Absolute Bobbin probes having diameter less than ID of tube fill factor range - 80% t0 90%. Probe Frequency Selection The frequency can be calculated by using following equations. F90 = 3 x Resistivity / (Thickness)2 F180 = 2.15 x F90, Fas = F90/2 F90/10 = F90/10 ‘Where Resistivity = Materials resistivity value in micro ohm-centimeters. Thicknes: F = Frequency in KHz Reference calibration tube Reference Calibration tube shall be made as per the ASME standard (as per attached Annexure-3). ube thickness in millimeter Grade, heat treatment, surface finish of the tube used in the calibration block shall be same as tubes under test. 3. PROCEDURE ‘= Surface Requirements All the tubes to be tested should be cleaned properly and dried so that inner surface of each Tube shall be free from dust, mud, etc. which may otherwise obstruct movement of bobbin probes within the tubes while scanning, * Scanning Complete length of each tube shall be scanned manually at speed not more than 2 m/s. For tubes that cannot be tested due to obstructions (hard scales, sagged tube or improper tube rolling) shall be reported and No comments with respect to thinning or defects will be given for part of the tube tested. These tubes shall be reported as PNG (Probe not going). Calculate the optimal frequency for the tube to be tested. 2. Select frequencies, differential channels and absolute channels. 3. Select mix in order to eliminate the support plate signals. 4, Select calibration points. 5. Create report codes, measuring channels and phase depth curves. 6. Calibrate the differential and absolute channels. * Calibration 1. For ECT calibration differential and absolute parameters has to be set as follows. For differential channel: Calibration Point Hole Angle 40 degree Amplitude 1.00 volt For absolute channe |: Calibration Point: Hole Angle 40 degree Amplitude 0.10 volt 2. Insert the probe into the calibration tube and balance the probe. 3. Start the acquisition and move the probe slowly inside the calibration tube and then stop the acquisition 4, Now select the channel in the strip chart and adjust it so that all the discontinuities on the Calibration tube can be seen. 5. Open the system calibration to calibrate channels, depth curves or channel and depth curves. 6, Select a discontinuity in the list of references. 7. In the strip chart select the particular discontinuity by using cursor so that it can be identified 8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the rest of the discontinuities and then click calibrate so that the calibration coefficients are calculated and the information of the processed channels is. automatically updated with the calibration results 9. Open calibration details to view the calibration coefficients and save the setup. ‘+ Data Acquisition and Analysis 1. Once calibration is completed and all the calibration coefficients are saved and setup is ready then start collecting the data of the tubes for the respective equipment 2. The tube data signals should be reasonably similar to the signals obtained from the calibration tube. 3. Consistently high baseline noise signals due to scale, material deposition, foreign particles, etc. shall be investigated. 4. After collection of tube data of equipment, compare the inspection data with calibration data to evaluate the exact size and depth of the defect. 5. Potential defects and wall thinning shall be verified by supplement NDT method like IRIS on client request.
