Color & Shape Sorting
On a flat surface or
using the peg board
connect the pegs by
stacking them on top
of each other.

You will notice that each


shape is the same color!

For example:
When you stack the stars
they will all be the same
color.

Color Matching
Adult: Pick a peg and place
it into the foam board while
you name its color.

Child: Find the same color


peg and place it right next to
the other peg and name
its color.

Adult: Pick a peg and place

Color Recognition
Adult: Place 5 different color
pegs across the foam board.

Point to the first peg and ask


your child to name its color.

Ask your child to then look


around the room and find things
that are that same color.

Repeat with other colors.

Color Discrimination
Adult: Place 3 pegs of the same
color and 1 peg of a different
color across the foam board.

Ask your child to pick out the peg


that is different from the rest.

Change the placement of the


“odd” peg then ask again.

Reinforce color names by asking


what color the other pegs are.

Adult: Place 3 pegs of the same
shape and 1 peg of a different
shape across the foam board.

Ask your child to pick out the peg


that is different from the rest.

Reinforce shape names by asking

Color Patterns
Adult: Place 5 pegs side by side to
create a pattern:
Green, Pink, Green, Pink, Green

Ask your child which color


comes next.

Have your little create a similar


pattern on the next row with
different colors.

Extension: Increase the difficulty of the patterns by increasing the


number of colors in each pattern.

Counting
Adult: Place 5 pegs across the
pegboard counting each one
as you place them.

Ask your child to count them


left to right.

Place 2 more pegs into the board


and ask you child to count from
the beginning.

Note: Learning to work from left to right is an important skill for


reading readiness.

Addition
Adult: Place 2 pegs of the same
color into the board counting
each one as you place them.

Place one more peg of a different


color next to the other two and
count them again.

Say to your child “Two pegs plus


one peg equals how many pegs?”

Repeat by stacking the pegs instead of placing them side by side.

Subtraction
Adult: Place 3 pegs of the same
color into the board counting
each one as you place them and
1 peg of a different color.

Say to your child “Four pegs minus


one peg equals how many pegs?”

Count the remaining pegs to


demonstrate how to find your answer.

Repeat by stacking the pegs instead of placing them side by side.

Adult: Ask your child to find a
specific number and color of pegs.

For example: “Please place 2


blue pegs into the board.”

Increase the number of pegs


and combinations of colors
and shapes as their skill level
increases.

For example: “Please place 1 star


peg and 1 oval peg into the board.
