Element Gallery Project

Presentation Day: (Date)

Research Planning
Task: Read the rubric and create a document that answers each field thereby setting the timeline for your group to be
prepared for the presentation on (Date).
3-D Model
Task: Create a 3-model that illustrates a double replacement reaction including your assigned element, with a legend
that shows the elements color key, the balanced chemical equation, the percent composition of each molecule and the
molar masses. (Hint* make sure to differentiate between ionic and covalent bonds)

Standard(s):

SC2

● f. Develop and use bonding models to predict chemical formulas including ionic (binary and ternary), acidic, and inorganic covalent compounds.
● g. Develop a model to illustrate the release or absorption of energy (endothermic or exothermic) from a chemical reaction system depends upon the
changes in total bond energy.

SC3

c. Use mathematics and computational thinking to apply concepts of the mole and Avogadro’s number to conceptualize and calculate

• percent composition
• empirical/molecular formulas
• mass, moles, and molecules relationships
• molar volumes of gases
Research Paper
Tasks: 3-5 Pages APA Format with appendices consisting of at least 5 diagrams and/or illustrations

Standard(s):

SC1: f. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms (i.e.
including atomic radii, ionization energy, and electronegativity).

SC2:

● b. Construct an argument by applying principles of inter- and intra- molecular forces to identify substances based on chemical and physical properties.
● c. Construct an explanation about the importance of molecular-level structure in the functioning of designed materials.

SC4:

● b. Construct an argument using collision theory and transition state theory to explain the role of activation energy in chemical reactions. (Clarification
statement: Reaction coordinate diagrams could be used to visualize graphically changes in energy (direction flow and quantity) during the progress of a
chemical reaction.)
● c. Construct an explanation of the effects of a catalyst on chemical reactions and apply it to everyday examples.
Brochure
Tasks: Create a tri-fold brochure that informs the reader of the history of your element including its discovery and
details a current commercial use of the element. The is based on your company’s product that is detailed in the
marketing plan assignment. (Must be in color and printed on cardstock or brochure laminate paper … Laminated
copy paper is acceptable)

Standard

SC6: c. Use mathematics and computational thinking to evaluate commercial products in terms of their concentrations (i.e., molarity and percent by mass).
Google Slides (Study Guide)
Tasks: Create a detailed study guide that walks the reader through the process depicted by your 3-D model. This
needs to include how to calculate molar mass and percent composition.

Standard

SC3:

a. Use mathematics and computational thinking to balance chemical reactions (i.e., synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and
combustion) and construct an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic
table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.
Presentation
Task: Be prepared to explain the created ideas to students and teachers that come to the media center on (date)

Standards: All covered in component assignments

Tri-Fold Board
Task: Create a (full/standard size) tri-fold display that meets the requirements of the rubric and supports your oral
presentation. (notice the image shows the work of 3rd graders I expect more from each of you)

Standards: All covered in component assignments

Group Collaboration
Task: Score your fellow group members at the end of the project based on the rubric.
