Lesson Idea Name: Geology Summary

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: S3E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide
evidence of past organisms.
a. Construct an argument from observations of fossils (authentic or reproductions) to communicate how they
serve as evidence of past organisms and the environments in which they lived.

Technology Standard Addressed: 6- Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Movie (list application): Adobe Spark
☐ Audio (list application):

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning:

The technology will help how students engage and interact with the content by enhancing the way they
interact with the content and express their understanding. Students will now be able to receive content in an
online medium that they will have access to outside of the classroom. The lesson will involve students
creating their own video projects on a component or topic of the lesson/unit. Students will now be able to
add this method of expression to their work. Students will no longer have to choose between pen, paper, or
oral delivery. Using the online tools will give access to all students no matter their learning levels or potential
disabilities.
Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will start the lesson by gauging the students understanding of the topic so far. This lesson will be
a summary lesson before a test the next day. The instruction will take 15 minutes and the project will take 45.
After the lesson, the students will get into groups or work individually to complete a video project. This
project will gauge the student’s comprehension of the material. This will be a formative assessment before
the final summative assessment.

The product itself will also be a tool to further review the topics taught previously. Students will be given the
ability to dive deeper into the content or stay at the surface to retain what they need to know. I will conclude
the lessons by having the students share their creations with the other groups. I will discuss each creation
with the students, and it will help clear up any miscommunications.
Importance of technology:

MultiMedia Tools
Without multimedia tools students would have limited ways to express their understandings of the content.
This project, like most projects, could be completed without technology. However, a sense of independence
and creativity would be lost. Students would have to complete a paper project or write a paper. In this
learning experience the students will be using Padlet to share their creation with the class.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

To minimize risk of a student’s privacy being exposed I would have the students create pseudonyms before
they uploaded it. Also, I would only post it to the password protect section of the classroom blog. Before hand
I would give the students a list of safe and secure websites that contain fair use material. This would alleviate
any fears of copyright infringement. Finally, I would be sure to have all the correct paperwork from all the
parents so I would be free to post it to the class blog.

Reflective Practice:

After designing the lesson, I feel that this could greatly impact student learning. It gives the student or the
group of students a sense of independence. These students will be motivated and excited to create a project
no matter the topic. I could extend this lesson by having the students go home and film the rocks and soil
they have in their area. They would then compile the footage into a community geological study. This would
require more physical technology like cameras and microphones.
