Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Recall the 4 textural Terms for Igneous Rocks
2. Demonstrate Extrusive and Intrusive using Videos to show the Process.
3. Defend what is the importance of rocks on the environment.

II. Subject Matter

“Why does fast Cooling Magma Produces Fine Grain Rocks compared to Slow Cooling
Magma”
Materials: Videos, Pictures
Values: Develop curiosity to students of how landscapes on earth are form and
Appreciate the importance of this processes.

Yes Sir! It was great and we also went on
some new places out of town.
So how was your weekend? Did you enjoy
your weekend bonding with your family? Yes Sir! We went to near a volcano in
Hawaii and saw some Magma up close.
But its already hard.
Did anyone go to long vacation places like
Kawasan Falls? Or went on camping? ( One student answered)
Yes Sir! It came from a volcano!

Nice! Since you mentioned Magma, did

you know where it came from?
Good! Yes that’s correct! It came from a ( Other students tried raising their hands

Okay! Now since I have all your attention!

What we just talked just now will be Sir! What is a Magma? How does it
connected to our discussion for today form? Does it stay hot forever?
which is Why does fast cooling magma

slow cooling magma. ( Everyone starts to get curious and have

Rocks.
These are the rocks that makes the most
volume of the earths crust, which is
Igneous Rocks.

So “Ignis” is a Latin word meaning Fire. ( Students were amazed of the discussion
and stayed silent to listen more)
What you see in volcanic eruptions that
comes out of the peak of the volcano or
crater is called Magma. When it goes to
the earths surface, its called Lava. (Students are repeating the word
“IGNIS”)
When it cools down. It is called or become
Igneous rocks or Volcanic rock.

There are actually 2 types of Igneous

Rocks.
First is the EXTRUSIVE ROCKS, this is the
magma that reaches the earths surface
and cools down rapidly.

And, we have the INTRUSIVE ROCKS,

magma that was not able to reach the
surface or came out of a volcano due to
the crusts of the earth and cools down
under the earth’s surface SLOWLY
compared to the Extrusive rocks.

All of these rocks are melted mineral that

are formed into an interlocking
arrangement producing an Igneous rock. (One student answered)
Sir! The Magma that reaches the earth!
So, Question which is better when cooled
down? The magma that reaches the
earth? Or the Magma that cooled under Because everyone on earth is handsome
the earth slowly? and beautiful! ( He laughed)

WHY?

Okay SIR!
( With Exitement)

That’s a good answer, however there is an

explanation to everything.
Now I will tell you what are the reasons
and explanations about these rocks.

So once the Magma cools down, it is

classified into 4 textural terms for Igneous
rocks.

First is,

1. Phaneritic (coarse grained): rocks are

composed of mineral grains large enough
to be seen with the unaided
eye. Indicitive of SLOW cooling, usually
deep within the Earth.

2. Aphanitic (fine grained): rocks are

composed of mineral grains too small to
be seen by the unaided eye. Indicitive of
faster cooling, usually at or near the
Earth's surface.

3. Glassy: magma cooled so quickly that

crystal formation could not occur.
Indicative of almost instant cooling at the
Earth's surface.

4. Porphorytic: large mineral cyrstals

surrounded by a fine grained matrix
(background). This texture forms when
slow cooling begins to form large mineral
crystals. Before the magma is completely
cooled the magma (and its large mineral

grains) moves closer to the surface and

finishes cooling at a more rapid pace.

So meaning, rocks that are cooled fast

most likely has fine Grains. Why? Because
they are solidified faster and not able to
form other forms while its hot.
Thank you Sir!
Compared to magma that are stored Now we know what is the difference
under the earths surface and cooled between the two!
slower compared to Extrusive Rocks. They
are cooled and turns to solid slower which
makes other parts of the magma formed
to other forms because its till hot. It is
cooled slower because of the lack or
presence of oxygen or low presence of
oxygen.

Now, I want you to watch a video about

Igneous Rocks, how its form and the
process its form resulting to different
classification of rocks. (Students watch the video with no one
even talking to other classmates)

(AFTER THE VIDEO)

I want you to get a piece of Paper and

Answer the following Questions.

Igneous Rocks ( Students are all bowing their heads
busy answering the questions)
3-6. Give the 4 Textural Terms
for Igneous Rocks
7-10. Enumerate the process
of how a Magma Turns to Lava
and to Igneous Rocks.

Everyone Pass your Paper ( Left and Right, passing the papers on
the center isle)

I want you to bring pictures of

different Types of Igneous
