Soda pop has an interesting story. The story begins with mineral water. Mineral water comes
from springs. In many places, people take baths in mineral water. They say washing with mineral
water is good for their health. Some say drinking mineral water is also good for people.
Mineral water has bubbles in it. People learned to make bubbly water in the 1770’s. They added
CO2 to water with a machine to make the water bubbly. The machine was the “soda fountain.”
They called the new bubbly water “soda water” or “carbonated water.”
American drug stores sold soda water. Druggists put good-tasting flavors in the soda water.
People drank soda water for their health. Many people liked it for its good flavor. Many people
went to the soda fountain every day. Most soda fountains were in drug stores or ice cream shops.
In the early 1900’s, people bought soda water in bottles. Later in the 1900’s, people started to
buy flavored soda water in cans. Now it is sold in many containers in grocery stores and other
places where food is sold. Some people call it “pop.” Some say “soda.” Other people call it “cola,”
“tonic,” or “soda pop.”

Text for questions number 19 - 21

The cactus is a plant which grows in very hot, dry places. They do not have leaves. Instead,
they have spiny needles which stick out of their stems. There are many shapes of the cactus. Some
are small and round. Others are tall like columns or pillars. Some are shaped like tubes or bells.
Some are shaped like wheels. Some grow as trees or shrubs. Others grow as ground cover. Cactus
flowers are big, and some of them bloom at night. Their flowers come out at night because they
are pollinated by insects or small animals that come out at night. Insects and small animals carry
pollen from one cactus to another.
Most cacti live in North and South America. Others live in Africa, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka.
Cacti do not have very large leaves because large leaves would allow the water to evaporate.
When water evaporates, it changes from a liquid to a gas. When it becomes a gas, it is light enough
to move through the air. That would be bad for the cactus because the cactus needs the water to
live.
Some cacti have waxy coatings on their stems, so that water will run down the stem to the
roots.
Cacti can absorb water from fog in the air, since it does not rain very much in the desert. Most
cacti have long roots which can spread out close to the surface so they can absorb a lot of water on
the occasions when it rains.

In the jungle, once there was a fierce lion who killed many animals. The survivors decided that if they
were not to suffer the same fate something must be done. The king of the jungle would have to make do with
one meal a day. In return to save him the effort of hunting, each day’s victim would come to the lion of his own
accord.
Things went on like this until it came to the turn of a cunning, old hare. Off he went to the lion, gasping
as if he has just run a long way.
‘On my way here,’ he said,’I was attacked by a lion. If I can not run fast, I would never have escaped.’
‘Another lion?’ The king of the jungle roared angrily at very idea of a rival. ‘Where is he?’
‘At the pool. He is big and young, stronger and braver than you.’
‘We’ll see about that. Take me to him.’
So the lion followed the hare to the pool and there, as he leaned over the edge, he saw another lion in

When I was a boy, I liked swimming very much. One year my two brothers and I spent the summer

business applications, gaming and photography. Mobile phones that offer these and more general computing
capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

The first hand-held mobile phone was demonstrated by John F. Mitchell and Dr Martin Cooper of
Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing around 2.2 pounds (1 kg). In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x was the
