COFIMCO Installation and Operation Manual
All COFIMCO rotors have an identification plate attached on the hub, permitting fast and accurate
identification. The ID. plate shown below lists the following informations :

1.0 OPERATING PRINCIPLES
1.1 All Cofimco autovariable configurations are "cylinder actuated". Regulated compressed air,
which is further controlled by a positioner valve, moves a cylinder actuating mechanism along the
axis of flow. The cylinder actuator is connected to each of the fan blade stems by a system of
articulating control rods. The blades, in turn, are radially attached to the fan hub, at their stems, by a
1.2 Each AVP fan hub has an "integral output shaft coupling", which is typically located on the air
supply side of the fan (AVP gear on 'M' serie fan type).
Some fan installations require that the fan hub be attached to the ouput shaft on the discharge side
of the propeller. For this reason, Cofimco provides AVPR series hubs, which are configured with
the "integral output shaft coupling" on the discharge side of the rotor (AVPR gear on 'MR'fan type)
1.3 Cofimco can supply autovariable fans which can provide maximum or minimum air flow in case
of air failure, according to customers' needs. Cofimco can also supply autovariable fans with an air
lock valve system which guarantees the pitch maintenance for a minimum of half an hour.
2.1 In order to satisfy varying customer needs, Cofimco has developed two autovariable fan
configurations: o e - A US
AVP2B-AVPR2B configurations require one air supply with line pressure ranging from-3-^-}5-r\Si"
The AVTR2B and AVRP2 configurations require two air supply lines with instrument pressure
3.1 The blades and actuator hubs of Cofimco autovariable fans are generally dispatched from the
factory disassembled. Unless otherwise specified, balancing shall be carried out as follows:
3.2 Two simple ioo\s are required for proper fan assembly:
Dynamometric spanner: (torque wrench, fig. 1) required to tighten the bolts that lock the
Goniometric level: (inclinometer, fig. 2) required to set the blade pitch to the proper angle for
the desired performance in accordance with the procedure described in section "INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS".

WARNING: After having tightened the bolts that affix the blades to the actuator hub, it is very
important to prevent them from loosening by installing security safety wire. Use the double twist
4.1 In cases where hubs are bored to directly accept the drive shaft.
The actuator cylinder and linkage must be separated from the hub assembly, to allow for a
proper installation. First, match mark all relevant joints and actuator flange bolts. Disconnect the
linkage arms and unbolt the piston shaft flange from the top of the hub assembly.
Position the hub on its drive shaft so that the coupling is seated against the shaft step. Insert an
appropriate bolt and washer through the center of the hub and torque it down as required.
Reinstall the actuator unit in its original match marked position and ensure that the linkage rods
4.2 In cases where split tamper bushings are employed and shaft is not stepped
Slide the bushing onto the unlubricated drive to such a position that will allow the entire hub
coupling to be engaged.
Position the entire actuator hub assembly over the bushing taper, insert the bushing bolts
through the busking flange and into the threaded holes in the hub coupling, then draw the entire hub
assembly onto the bushing according to the torque recommendations provided by the bushing
manufacturer.
'1
The fan blades are attached to the hub actuator assembly by passing bolts through
the blade flange and into the threaded holes in the flat end of the bearing housing. The expected
blade pitch value must first be determined and the blade must be held in this position before the blade
flange bolts are finally tightened to a minimum driving torque of 12 Kg/m (87 lb./feet).
Blade pitch angle adjustment must be made according to the A° specification on the rotor
identification plate.
1) Position an inclinometer across the least curved part of the blade, 5 mm from the tip of the
trailing edge and perpendicular to the blade axis. The tool will span the pressure face of the blade
with one end resting on the trailing edge, and the other end resting on the highest point of the
cambered surface.
In cases of very large chord profiles, where the base of the inclinometer is too short to properly span
the aforementioned points, a suitable straight edge must first be placed under the base of the
measuring device.
2) Rotate the blade on its own axis until the specified pitch angle (A°) value is obtained.
4) Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each blade, maintaining the entire assembly in the same azimuthal
angle, in order to compensate for any slight departures from a vertical rotation axis.
5.1 Manually rotate the assembly for at least one full turn in order to ensure that there will be no
interference with the surrounding structure.
5.2 Effect one full turn of each blade to verify that tip clearance ratio G/D (where G= the
distance from the blade tip to the fan ring, and D = rotor diameter) does not exceed the
average specified value.
5.3 Check that the blades slope at the proper angle of inclination, with respect to airflow, to the
axis of rotation.
5.6 Start up the motor for a few seconds, then switch off. While the rotor is still turning, check
that the direction of the blade rotation is correct
Generally speaking, the direction of rotation is correct when the flow of air moves from the convex
back, or dorsal side of the blade to the concave ventral face of the blade.
6.1 Check power absorption. If excessive, reduce blade pitch angle until the desired power is
achieved.
Note: The power absorbed varies in inverse proportion to the air temperature.
6.2 After the rotor has been running for an hour, check the torque of the hub lock down bolts
6.3 Repeat the hub lock down bolt check after the rotor has operated for 24 hours.
