Icelandic Long Shawl

In the past Icelanders knit lace wraps in both
triangular and rectangular shapes. The rectangular
shawls were called Langsjol, or long shawl. This
modern version showcases a variety of Icelandic
lace stitches.

Knit from end to end, it starts with a chevron lace

border that can include bands of color. Then simple
spider lace repeats over eight rows to the ending
border. Both borders can be finished with optional
crocheted chain loops. The lace can be knit from
written instructions or charts.

Designed for Icelandic Einband lace weight yarn, it

is easy to customize the size to make a wider wrap
or narrower scarf in other yarns, such as fingering,
Shetland, sport, and DK weights.

 Instructions
INSTRUCTIONS
Notes: 1. Shawl can be worked over any multiple
of 12 + 9 stitches (such as 33, 45, 57, 69 sts).
Sample was knit on 57 sts, and numbers follow for
that size.
2. Sample was knit with 5 colors of yarn. When
changing colors, it is helpful to use a looped sewn
splice to join the yarns. Knit to end of row. Then
pierce the old yarn with a sharp-pointed needle
threaded with the new yarn to mark row end. Cut
old yarn 3" (7.5 cm) from that mark. Carefully
unknit the last 6 stitches. Leaving new yarn
piercing the old yarn, remove needle to thread with
tail of old yarn, and sew small running stitches into
the unraveled yarn towards the knitting for about
2" (5 cm). Leave a small open loop where the new
yarn is. Pull out new yarn, thread it through loop of
old yarn, and sew it towards the ball for about 2"
(5 cm). Pull on yarn ends to snug join, rub between
hands to smooth, and trim any remaining tails. Knit
to end of row, adjusting tension so row ends where
yarns are joined.
Cast-on
Note: For sample, CC1 was used for cast-on.
Leaving an extra tail length for crochet loop trim,
cast on 57 sts. Start Beginning Border.

single crochet in fourth stitch] across to end.
