Assignment I

Problem I

The second floor of light manufacturing building is made of 5inch

thickness stone concrete slab with added 4 inch thickness cinder concrete
fill. If the suspended ceiling of the first floor consists of metal lath and
gypsum plaster, then it is required to:

Calculate the total dead load acting in pounds per square foot of floor
area. (Material densities are provided in your lecture).

Problem II

A steel framework is used to support 4inch thickness reinforced stone concrete

slab that carries a uniform live load of 500lb/ft2.
It is required to:
Sketch the loading that acts along member BE and FED for:
a) a=7.5ft and b=10ft
b) a=4ft and b=12ft

Problem III (Very important)

The floor system used in a school classroom consists of a 120mm thick

reinforced concrete slab.

Given:
SDL=1.6kN/m2
LL=3.2kN/m2
Concrete specific weight is 25kN/m3

a- Sketch and calculate the loading that acts along the beam DF and
edge beam AM.
b- Sketch and calculate the loading that acts along the side girder
ABCDE.
Note: beam-girder and girder-column are treated as pinned connections

beam at points C and D. Assume the support at B is a roller. Point C is located
just to the right of the 40-kN load.

1-b. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam shown in figure.

2. Determine the internal shear, axial force, and bending moment in the beam
at points C and D. Assume the support at B is a roller. Point D is located just to the
right of the 50-kN load.

3. Determine the internal shear, axial load, and bending moment at point C,
which is just to the right of the roller at A, and point D, which is just to the left of the
15-kN concentrated force.
