Mass Enthalpy of Combustion for Cheetos, ΔcHmo = (kJ/g) Name______________

Prupose: To determine the mass enthalpy of combustion for a cheeto puff.

Prediction: There are 200.0 food calories in 35.00 grams of Cheetos. The conversion is 4.184 kJ/calorie.
The predicted mass enthalpy of Cheetos in kJ/g is:

Procedure:

1. Fill a large clean beaker with at least 300 mL of water.

2. Measure the mass of 1 cheeto puff.
3. Place the cheeto puff on a stand made from a paper clip to elevate it off of the surface of a glass
evaporating dish.
4. Using a steel stand design an apparatus that will suspend a test tube or beaker above the cheeto
puff so the energy of combustion will transfer to the test tube or beaker.
5. Accurately measure a volume of water that will fill a test tube or 100mL beaker about ¾ full.
6. Record the temperature of the water.
7. Ignite the cheeto puff from the bottom and allow it to burn directly under the water.
8. Record the final maximum temperature of the water.
9. Pour out the hot water and modify your apparatus with tin foil so you can transfer more of the
energy of combustion into the water. In other words improve this system to make an isolated
system or calorimeter. Use the KISS theory.
10. Repeat steps 2-8 two more times, making any improvements as needed between trials 2 and 3.

Post lab questions:
1 Assuming you weigh 75.0 kg and you are 80.0% water, how much would your body temperature
increase if you ate 100 g (1/3 of a bag of cheeto puffs). Use the energy of combustion of Cheeto
Puffs as -24.3 kJ/g

2. Give 2 reasons why your body temperature will not increase by the amount you calculated.
