Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 The problem and its background

According to an article from worldpopulationreview.com, Manila has a total population of

13,698,889 and growth rate of 1.59% in the year of 2019. There are 14 districts in the City

of Manila and among of them Quiapo is least populated city in Manila. Based on the 2010

Census of Population and Housing (CPH), Quiapo has an overall population of 24,886 and

less than 4% of total population in Manila City. We agreed on that we will be choosing the

least population here in Manila in able to identify if their future project study will be

beneficial to future consumer.

As stated by Manila Electric Co. Chair Manuel V. Pangilinan, that every year it increases

the population and also the demand that will cause a serious power supply shortage in the

next few years. As Meralco account the usage of electricity in this year of 2019, they have

declared that there is an increase of 4.5 % and additional new customers around 285,000

that in total of 6.68 million users of Meralco

The researchers have studied and develop a possible solution if there will be a scarcity of

electricity in the next few years. We suggest to create an “Incline Crank Mechanism Tidal

Wave Energy” where in it will generate energy from the wave of water. This future

prototype can produce electricity even in a non-wave area or slightly wave area. It is an
incline crank where in it will be slant in water and it will be move to front or back that will

cause a wave. The wave that it will produce will be converted to mechanical energy to

electrical energy and it will distribute to respective areas here in Quiapo, Manila.

As stated by Manila Electric Co. Chair Manuel V. Pangilinan, that every year it increases

the population and also the demand that will cause a serious power supply shortage in the

next few years. If it will continue to increase the demand of electricity, surely there will be

a scarcity of electricity in the next years. Imagine how difficult it will be if there will be a

shortage of electricity in a generation that technology is one of necessity of each of

everyone. There will be a possibility that someday the energy we are commonly used will

be not enough to the demand. What will happen to us if that will happen? Can we live

without those things we usually use every day? That’s why the researcher develop this

study in order to sustain the needs and save energy.

1.2 Objective of the Study

Harnessing Energy from the Ocean or Sea Waves isn’t new but the technology currently

lagging behind comparing from the other alternative sources of energy, we are redesigning

a wave energy converter which will allow us to harness the energy directly parallel and in

line to the wavelength. We will use the Trough and Crest of wave to directly hit a Pedal

Plate which will turn a dynamo inside our Mechanical Device or the Converter.

To Gain advantage of; possibly improve or innovate the wave converters.

The Main objective of the Device must be the following:

• The Device should be able to float as it will catch the incoming wave.

• It must be able to continuously Harness power

• The Mechanical Advantages and Machine Design must be applied to the project as

well as the Fluid Mechanics

• The Design should be done from the Solidworks

• The Device must be able to produce at least 100 watts of Power, Typical Cellphone

Chargers use 40 Watts.

• Must be able to Power small devices continuously without interruptions

• Must be economically and environmentally friendly

• A Small Size that it can be portable, possibly 1-foot by 1-foot device

• We should theoretically use, a crank mechanism, a gear box, a flywheel, a power

capacitor

1.3 Significance of the study

This study will help the people to know the benefits and impacts to the environment when

using renewable sources like wave energy and to minimize the use of non-renewable

resources. This study aims to reduce our dependence on carbon-based fossil fuels, enhances
energy efficiency, and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and aspires to build wave

energy power stations which shall give people access to electricity in proximity to their

residence without creating air pollution. The Project will be significant to the following:

• Underdeveloped Communities will greatly benefit from the device especially if

they live near the shorelines.

• The Government can deploy the devices to the communities affected by a

devastating Calamity

1.4 Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on a generating energy through ocean wave to be put in different

island in the Philippines so that the people in the island will have a source of power.

The study aims to produce a working design of a generating energy to be put few meters

from the shore of the island. As for now the material to be used for the case and gears are

plastic ABS is amorphous and therefore has no true melting point. ABS is a terpolymer

made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene and this

kind of materials that will be use is low cost and the making of this project is easy for the

people in islands.
The project study will be focusing in Quiapo, Manila that has lack of energy source for

lightings and charging for their devices and also it can be use in the boats for lightings

when they going in the ocean in evening.
