SOCIETY OVERVIEW
We are an association of young, passionate,
and dynamic undergraduate and post-
graduate students from the University of
Nairobi with a keen interest in Alternative
Dispute Resolution.
VISION, MISSION & MOTTO
We are mission driven to advocate for,
encourage, promote and take part in the
practice of Alternative Dispute Resolution
(ADR) and related matters.
OUR EXPERIENCE
Our team is made up of both students and
certified professionals in various Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms. In
addition, our patron is a distinguished ADR
practitioner.

WHAT WE DO
We achieve our mission by promoting the
research, training, practice, networking and
consulting on various ADR processes and
techniques.
MEMBERSHIP & LEADERSHIP
Membership is open to any undergraduate
or post graduate student in the University of
Nairobi; who is interested in ADR and has
paid a membership fee of KES 200.
Members can be appointed to lead YAS.

 Our history starts in July 2016 based on the joint proposal of
Malvika Bhansali and Said Matiha and the launch of February 2017.

CONCEPTUALIZATION LAUNCH AFFILIATIONS DISPUTE RESOLUTION

The Young Arbiters Society –
University of Nairobi Chapter
(YAS - UoN Chapter) was
conceptualized and proposed
by Malvika Bhansali and
Said Matiha on the 25th of
July 2016.
Mr. Edgar Alema YAS UoN Chapter became
spearheaded the launch of affiliated with the Law
YAS – UoN Chapter which Society of Kenya ADR
took place on the 24th of Committee; the Chartered
February 2017 at the UoN Institute of Arbitrators
School of Law. Mr. Alema (Kenya Branch); the Young
then became the first Members Group; the
President of the YAS Mediation Training
Executive Board. Institute East Africa; among
other stakeholders in ADR.
CENTRE
The YAS - UoN Chapter
leadership team of
2018/2019 established the
University of Nairobi
Dispute Resolution Centre
and the YAS UoN Chapter
Secretariat to support the
work of the Society.

 Our track record showcases rapid growth and development within
the short span of existence.
Our track record
Facilitated the training of Certified Professional
1 Mediators (CPMs) in collaboration with the
Mediation Training Institute (I) East Africa

2 Participation in the Nairobi Centre for International

Arbitration (NCIA) conferences and moots

Entering into memoranda of understanding and

3 affiliation agreements with various stakeholders in
ADR

4 YAS won a scholarship of US$ 4260 to participate in

the 2019 CPR Int'l Mediation Competition in Brazil

Acquisition of a distinguished ADR practitioner as

5 patron and successfully organising an ADR talk in the
UoN School of Law with an expert panel in ADR

6 Establishment of an ADR Centre a staffed Secretariat

& social media platforms information management.

 Membership of the Young Arbiters Society is structured into four
main categories with different requirements.
Membership
AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP
Any association, corporate entity, law firm,
legal society, Alternative Dispute Resolution
Centre, learning institutions, business
enterprise, government agency or student-
run organisation can apply for affiliate
membership by sending its letter of request

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP
Any prominent person, distinguished scholar,
expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution, a
YAS - UoN founding member or former
leader can express interest in becoming an
honorary member of the YAS - UoN Chapter

ORDINARY MEMBERSHIP
Any undergraduate or post-graduate UoN
student with an interest in Alternative
Dispute Resolution can become a member by
paying a registration fee of KES 200 and
filling the required information in the link
below: (No prior ADR training is required.)

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP
Any person who already has professional
qualifications in ADR such as the Certified
