TRAFFIC FLOW 1

1. Evaluate journey and running speeds for the following situation and interpret the
result:

Average Total Travel Time including Delay due to Traffic = 32 minutes

Average Delays at each Junction:-

J1 = 5 min
J2 = 5 min
J3 = 3 min
J4 = 4 min
J5 = 6 min

Solution

Average Journey Speed = 8km 

 1h  60min  15 km h
32min

Average Running Speed

= 8km 
 1h  60min  53.3 km h
32min - (5min  5min  3min  4min  6min)

Interpretation
Since Journey Speed less than Running speed, this proven that the drivers
experience heavy traffic flow and inefficient traffic control system at
junctions.

2. Computation of Time Mean Speed (TMS) AND Space Mean Speed (SMS)

Vehicle No. Distance, d (ft) Travel Time, t (s) Speed (ft/s)

1 1,000 18 55.6
2 1,000 20 50.0
3 1,000 22 45.5
4 1,000 19 52.6
5 1,000 20 50.0
6 1,000 20 50.0
Total 6,000 119 303.7
Average 1,000 19.8 50.6

TMS = 50.6 ft/s

SMS = 1,000 / 19.8 = 50.4 ft/s

3. A study on traffic flow has been conducted at Lebuhraya Semporna-Tawau.

Based on the data collection, the free speed at this highway was 105km/h,
meanwhile the jam speed was 3/4 compared to the free speed. Please calculate
the maximum flow and speed at the maximum flow.

FREEWAY AND HIGHWAY LEVEL OF SERVICE (LOS)

Determine the typical LOS for Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen near Asia City. The details of
the road are given as follows:

3 lanes for one direction Volume = 4000 veh/h
Interchange per mile = 1.5 2% trucks
Left lateral clearance = 5ft. 3% buses
