INTRODUCTION
A. Baground of the Study
Speaking is one of the important basic skills in learning English.According to
Hedge (2003), learning speaking is very important for students. They may need
this skill for a variety of reasons, such as for exchanging information, for
influencing people, and for persuading the other people to speak with different
and has become part of our daily activity. In learning English speaking at school,
the students are usually asked by their teacher to speak English such as telling
story, telling their experience, and describing their friends or something in the
class. The process should be designed to make the students active and creative in
order to speak. The teacher can use the some techniques to enhance the students’
course, note taking. Mind Mapping is an important technique which can improve
the way to make students focus or concentrate to the topic.Mind mapping can help
new insight for the students because it contains the key word or outline about the
topic that will be conveyed to the others. In addition, this is creative method
which is possible for students to identificate the topic that they have planned and
systematically.

The researcher also found some previous researches that have been conducted
Susilawati from University of Jambi, in her research The Effect Of Using Mind
SMPN 30 Muaro Jambi. The research design used in this research was quasi-
experimental byusing non-equivalent group design with pretest and posttest. The
result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pretest in experimental
and control class were 9.30 and 7.47 while the mean score of posttest in
experimental and control class were 13.65 and 10.05. Moreover, the result of

hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can
be concluded that the students have better achievement in their speaking skill by
using mind mapping. Then, the researcher also found the research by Siti

the study which is conducted by the writer showed that the finding shows that the
t-test calculation from the result of pre-test in cycle I is 5,37, cycle II is 6,06 and
cycle III is 6,68. While, score of posttest in cycle I is 6,86, cycle II 7,6 and cycle
III is 7,96. It means that the use of mind mapping can improve the students’
writing skill. Next, research has been done by Tika Rahmawati is The Use of

students‟ speaking skill increase s from pre to post test. The mean of pre-test

speaking skill

show that the students get inprovement in speaking. It could be seen from the
different of the students’ score in preetest and post test. More thant 50% of the
students get stagnation in preetest and in post test 78% of the students’ could
finish their speaking activity. And they can give respond of the question given.
So, we can conclude that mind maping technique could improve the students

The problems that mostly occurred in students‟ speaking are that they
listeners effectively. Consequently, they tend to repeat some words that the
listeners hardly get the point of the speaker. To solve this, the teacher should
find a solution regarding the problems discussed. Otherwise, they need to put
their teaching style into variation and find a way that at least the students knows
what they are going to speak and they will be easy express their ideas fluently.

can be speaker who delivers information, and other can be listener who receives
the information.
Lesakova (2008) argued that speaking is the ability to develop and share
skill that people use to interact with other trough orally. It is produced and
processed in real life situation that means the speakers convey his or her message

Teaching speaking has been underestimated for many years and English

students’ ability toward their speaking skill before the treatment is conducted. On

The questionnaire adapt from Ms. Nashriyah (2014) and use Likert scale to
measure students’ perception. There are twenty one questions from the

before and after the treatment applied. Afterward, to find out the perseption of
