Exercise 2: Density.

1) The dimension of a classroom is 8.0 m x 7.5 m x 3.0 m. The density of air is 1.2 kgm -3.
a) Define the term density.
b) Calculate the volume of air in the classroom.
c) Calculate the mass of air in the classroom.
2) A tin weighs 50 kg when empty and 700 kg when completely full of paint. The volume of the paint is 5
x 10-3 m3.
a) Calculate
i) the mass of the paint,
ii) the density of the paint.
b) If the tin is made of a metal which has a density of 7800 kgm -3, calculate the volume of the metal
used to make the tin.
3) A plastic bottle when empty has a mass of 100 g. When the bottle is filled with water, the total mass is
1600 g. When the bottle is filled with cooking oil, the total mass is 1300 g. The density of water is 1.0
gcm-3. Calculate
a) the volume of the bottle.
b) the density of the cooking oil.
4) An irregular-shaped solid is lowered gently until it is completely immersed in a liquid (of density 1,2
gcm-3) in a displacement can. The mass of the liquid which overflowed is 180 g.
a) What is the volume of the irregular-shaped solid?
b) What is the mass of the solid if its density is 3.0 gcm -3?
5) The mass of an empty measuring cylinder is 60.0 g. When 30 cm 3 of olive oil is poured into it, the total
mass is 87.6 g. Calculate the density of the olive oil.
6) A boy has made a model ship with a mass of 1.1 kg and a volume of 900 cm 3. Will it float on water?
(Density of water is 1000 kgm-3)
7) Describe how you would measure the density of an irregular-shaped solid by means of a simple
experiment in a laboratory.
8) A measuring cylinder contains 100 cm3 of water. An irregular-shaped object of mass 70 g is lowered
into the cylinder. Given that the density of the object is 7.0 gcm -3 and that it is completely immersed,
calculate the new reading on the measuring cylinder.
9) A block of wood (   0.65 gcm 3 ) is placed in a beaker, in three different liquids of different

densities; methylated spirits (   0.79 gcm 3 ), water (   1.00 gcm 3 ) and glycerine (

  1.26 gcm 3 ). Show (by means of a diagram) how the block of wood would settle in the three
liquids.
