Extraction of Natural Dye from Talisay Plant Materials via Soxhlet Extraction

Materials and Equipment

 Hot Plate  Rubber Hose  Stirring Rod


 Condenser  (2) 500 mL Beaker  Spatula
 Extraction Chamber  50 mL Beaker  Wire Gauze
 500 mL Round  250 mL Graduated  Mortar and Pestle
Bottom Flask Cylinder  (2) Clamps
 Erlenmeyer Flash  Wash Bottle  Iron Stand

Set-up and Procedure

1. Finely cut up/grind the plant material.


2. Add 250 mL of ethanol to the round bottom flask, which is attached to a Soxhlet Extractor and
condenser on a hotplate.
3. Make sure that the sidearm of the soxhlet setup is lagged with glass wool.
4. The solvent is heated to 60 °C. The process is run for a total of 3 hours.
5. Once finished, the ethanol is to be evaporated using a rotary evaporator, leaving a small yield of
dye extract in the glass bottom flask.
