1 - INTRODUCTION

MONTANOV™ 202 differs from the other MONTANOV™ products essentially by the
evanescent and light feel that it gives to creams. The emulsions obtained spread
easily with fast penetration. They leave the skin soft, but not oily or shiny, with a
matte finish effect. These specific sensory characteristics, coupled with a
hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic profile, means that MONTANOV™ 202 is
perfectly suited to the needs of certain types of skin:
- oily skin,
- skin with a tendency to acne,
- ethnic skins,
- Asian skin.

The evanescent texture of MONTANOV™ 202 also makes it perfectly suitable for the
emerging market of care products for men.

In addition, through its long-lasting hydrating effect, MONTANOV™ 202 is ideally

suited to body care, and provides a feeling of well-being indispensable for this type
of application.

Completely versatile, MONTANOV™ 202 can be used to develop both fluid creams
(tube packaging) and thick creams (pot packaging). It is just as suitable for facial
applications as for body applications.

MONTANOV™ 202 is also suitable for the formulation of foundations with a gentle,
light texture and a matte finish.

3
2 - DEFINITION

MONTANOV™ 202 fully meets the requirements of the market, which expects gentle
products that respect the skin and its environment.

MONTANOV™ 202 is a glucolipid emulsifier produced from materials of

vegetable origin:

- glucose extracted from wheat, maize or manioc,

- fat derived from rapeseed colza oil.

The glycosidic link that joins the hydrophilic nucleus to the lipophilic fatty chain
makes the molecule perfectly stable and gives it very good resistance to hydrolysis.

Its novelty lies in the absence of ethylene oxide. The oxyethylene group
characteristic of conventional non-ionic emulsifiers is replaced here by a natural
saccharide. The result is a product comprising a hydrophilic glucolipid and a
lipophilic fatty chain.

4
3 - MONTANOV™ 202, A VERSATILE EMULSIFIER

3.1 - MONTANOV™ 202 emulsifies a wide range of fats

Like the other MONTANOV™ products, MONTANOV™ 202 can emulsify a wide range
of fats.

To obtain complete stability at 50 °C, the addition of a stabilizing polymer

(SEPIGEL™ - SIMULGEL™ - SEPIPLUS™ - SEPINOV™ ranges) is recommended.

3.2 - MONTANOV™ 202 as co-emulsifier

• Self-emulsifiable bases on fatty acid esters + ethoxylated fatty acids (such as

SIMULSOL™ 165) are widely used in cosmetics but show a lack of stability at 40 °C
and 50 °C.

The MONTANOV™ 202 - SIMULSOL™ 165 combination corrects this failing very
easily, as shown in the table below.

This type of combination gives creams with a light, evanescent feel (refer to SEPPIC
formulas 7034, 6982B, 6849 A).

• MONTANOV™ 202 can also be combined with MONTANOV™ 14, a thickening

agent with a light feel (refer to SEPPIC formula 6941).

• Combination with MONTANOV™ 68 gives a mixed texture which is of great

interest for anti-ageing care (refer to SEPPIC formulas 6767 and 6925 A).

3.3 - MONTANOV™ 202 as a thickening agent

MONTANOV™202 has a high melting point. This property is used to advantage in all
formulas where waxes need to be introduced, for example W/O emulsions,
mascaras and lipsticks.
In such cases MONTANOV™ acts as a thickening agent, improving the consistency of
the product.

⇒ refer to SEPPIC formula 6945 “Matte-finish compact foundation”

3.4 - MONTANOV™ 202, behaviour on hydrolysis

The etherified structure of MONTANOV™ 202 gives it excellent chemical stability

and the ability to emulsify in strongly acidic or alkaline media without risk of
degradation.
MONTANOV™ 202 is compatible with all oxidizing or oxidizable active ingredients,
acids and bases, such as AHAs and vitamins.
MONTANOV™ 202 can be used to develop specific formulas such as depilatory
creams, perm products and bleaching agents.

6
4 - MONTANOV™ 202, A LONG-LASTING HYDRATING
EFFECT

4.1 - Hydration promoter

The glucolipid structure of MONTANOV™ 202 means that it has intrinsic

hydrating properties, enabling the formulation of active excipients able to
prevent dehydration of the epidermis. It facilitates the action of conventionally used
hydrating active ingredients (urea, glycerine, NaPC, hyaluronic acid, etc.).

The hydrating effect of MONTANOV™ 202 has been demonstrated in vivo using the
corneometer method and compared with that of a commonly-used emulsifier.

MONTANOV™ 202 has a long-lasting hydrating effect. Significant hydration

persists 5 hours after application of the emulsion, in contrast to conventional
emulsifiers (DERMSCAN expert report 97-2117).
⇒ refer to SEPPIC formula 6925 A (with TEWL test).

7
4.2 - Liquid crystal promoter

MONTANOV™ 202 is capable of forming liquid crystals whatever the nature of the
emulsified oil phase (esters, silicones, vegetable oils, etc.).

The liquid crystals consist of a series of lamellar bilayers of emulsifiers around

the oil droplets.
They form an anisotropic structure easily detectable by its birefringence using an
optical microscope with polarized light (photograph 1 below).

Photograph 1: Liquid crystals in an Diagram 1: The emulsifier

→ The liquid crystals obtained with MONTANOV™ 202 have the special
characteristic of fully enveloping the oil droplet and forming a stable and rigid
shell, which prevents coalescence.

8

6 - FORMULATION ADVICE

6.1 - Working concentration

MONTANOV™ 202 can be used at a concentration from 3 to 5%, depending on the

required fluidity of the emulsion.

6.2 - How to use MONTANOV™ 202

To produce emulsions based on MONTANOV™ 202 under optimum conditions,

given its melting point, our advice is to:

– heat the oil phase in a double-jacketed vessel at a minimum of 80-85 °C (or in a

water bath for laboratory-scale production)

– form the emulsion at 80-85 °C in vessels fitted with rotor/stator turbine and
planetary mixer (at laboratory scale, the use of a Silverson or equivalent
homogenizer is advised)

– avoid sudden cooling.

10
– It is recommended that the stirring system be started after the mixing of the
two phases (“one go” procedure).
– Lower shear can be used (a disperser) if sufficient quantities of polymers are
added to increase the shear force and make the emulsion finer.

– Moreover, because of its self-emulsifiable character, MONTANOV™ 202 shows

great versatility of use in industrial processes: it can be introduced either in
the oil phase or in the aqueous phase.

6.3 - Sensorial profile

• TEXTURE
During the sensory analysis of emulsions produced using MONTANOV™ 202, the
qualifying terms most often used by the panellists were:

“lightness” - “evanescence” - “silky”

Emulsions based on MONTANOV™ 202 appear “lighter” compared with emulsions

based on MONTANOV™ 68, which appear “richer”. They are also smoother, whiter
and glossier* than MONTANOV™ 68.

MONTANOV™ 202 gives emulsions with a light, evanescent feel which spread easily
with fast penetration. These emulsions leave the skin soft, but not oily or shiny,
with a matte finish effect.
These specific sensory characteristics, coupled with a hypoallergenic, non-
comedogenic profile and good hydrating capacity, mean that MONTANOV™ 202 is
perfectly suited to the needs of certain types of skin and certain cosmetic targets:
- oily skin,
- skin with a tendency to acne,
- ethnic skins,
- Asian skin,
- care products for men,
- body care.

* Caution: “glossy emulsion” means that the emulsion appears visually glossy in its
packaging container. Under no circumstances does the MONTANOV™ 202 emulsion leave the
skin shiny after application.

• CONSISTENCY
Completely versatile, MONTANOV™ 202 can be used to develop both fluid creams
(tube packaging) and thick creams (pot packaging). It is just as suitable for facial
applications as for body applications.

11

“ALTERNATIVE” TESTS

HET CAM
Tested on chicken egg chorioallantoic membrane according to the technique
developed by Luepke and published in the Journal Officiel de la République
Française, MONTANOV™ 202 diluted to 1% in water is classified as non-irritant with
an index of = 0 (Seppic report Tox HET CAM 1105).

RBCA TEST

- Haemolyzing capacity
The haemolyzing capacity of MONTANOV™ 202 on red blood cells was assessed
according to the technique published by INVITTOX No. 37. The test uses a dose-
effect curve to determine the product concentration causing lysis of 50% of red
blood cells. This value is H50.

In the case of MONTANOV™ 202, the test result is H50 > 1000 ppm.
MONTANOV™ 202 is classified as non-haemolytic (SEPPIC report tox RBCA 856).

13
- Denaturing capacity
Assessment of the denaturing capacity consists in measuring the degree of
denaturation of oxyhaemoglobin. This effect, secondary to haemolysis, gives
information on the alteration of intracellular proteins.
Because of the highly lipophilic nature of the product, this parameter could not be
assessed.
Tested by the RBCA technique, MONTANOV™ 202 shows very good tolerance.

SUMMARY

MONTANOV™ 202, like the other products in the MONTANOV™ range, has:
- Excellent tolerance (tested under dermatological monitoring)
- Hypoallergenic
- Non-comedogenic

MONTANOV™ 202 is the ideal excipient for sensitive skin, for oily skin with a
tendency to acne, and also for dehydrated skin, which is often fragile.

Procedure
Mix the liquid ingredients in phase A then adjust the pH to approximately 9 before adding the
pigments. Grind this pigment phase using a bead grinder (prepare a quantity greater than that
theoretically required due to losses).
Melt phase B at 80-85°C, avoiding over-heating.
Heat the water to 80°C then add the MICROPEARL and EDTA. Then add pigment paste A, maintain
heating at 80°C.
Add B to the aqueous phase then start the emulsor (rotor turbine/stator). After few minuts introduce
SIMULGEL NS and the volatile silicone. Continue mixing (rotor/stator) until a vacuum is obtained (60°C).
Then gradually cool under moderate agitation (anchor type) and add the ingredients of E at around
30°C. Adjust the final pH if necessary.

Comments

MONTANOV 202 Glucolipid emulsifier in harmony with nature. It produces emulsions with a
very light, evanescent feel that are easy to apply and rapidly absorbed.
These emulsions leave the skin feeling soft and non-greasy. Their matte
finish effect helps prevent shine.

SIMULGEL NS Thickening and emulsifying agent in very easy to use liquid form (no pre-
dispersion or neutralization). Provides a sensation of freshness followed by a
melting effect on contact with the skin. It leaves a feeling of velvety softness.
SIMULGEL NS perfectly stabilizes emulsions against high temperatures.
SIMULGEL NS easily stabilizes mineral additives. The appearance of the
emulsion remains smooth and homogeneous over time.

MICROPEARL M305 Consisting of smooth, ultra-soft microspheres that do not dry out the skin,
MICROPEARL M305 gives emulsions and gel-creams a slightly powdery feel.
The greater the percentage of MICROPEARL M305, the more pronounced the
powdery feel. Due to its excellent hydrodispersibility, MICROPEARL M305
can be used in 10 to 15% concentrations with no problem of dispersion or
agglomeration. MICROPEARL M305 also contributes to the mattifying effect
of the formula by eliminating the phenomena of specular reflection.
