Mini Project Report on “Courier Services”

ABSTRACT

Parcel express service in many countries assumes door-to-door delivery of parcels and small packages
in the fastest possible way. Delivery companies usually organize hub delivery networks, as flows
between hubs are characterized by the economy of scale effect. At hubs, parcels are exchanged across
vans, trucks, and planes. To organize parcel delivery in a specific region, the parcel delivery company
must make appropriate decisions about the total number of parcel delivery hubs, their locations, and
the allocation of demand for facilities’ services to facilities.

The system is being used for day to day activities such as maintain employee details, booking a
courier, maintain hub details, maintain company details, Process data of employees and many other
things Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security,
signature, specialization, tracking and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times
for most everyday mail services. Courier services operate on all scales, from within specific towns or
cities, to regional, national and global se

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The courier company has number of branches, which are spread over the country or world.
So that, when person wants send the things when he has to contact at nears courier service branch.
The courier company creates the schedules and gives internal/external Services. The courier
service work has the destination officer or source office. The source office branch receives the
order means consignments and sends it to destination courier branch. The company has certain
rules according to the weight. Using the courier service person can easily send the parcel to other
person in the particular destination within the time.

When the consignment will visit to the city office of destination, a massage will be sent to
the recipient with delivery status confirmation. Then after getting this massage its recipient can
take its parcels by using their track I d. when its recipient will receive their parcels, then its track
id will be deleted automatically from the system data base after one week by sending final
confirmation massage to its recipient mobile number which will include information of track id ,
date of receiving and time along with greeting massage for providing further service in future

As time increase, needs and requirement of a person are also increased. They want to
more facility and try to do their task quickly and within time. But they cannot get all things at
nearest market or area, so they have to import the things from any place in world. Within the
country, the things can be imported through post service. But it consumes the time and sometimes
problem of damage or missing occur. Whereas in the international market the one way is
shipping this also requires more time. The courier service is one of the solutions of these
problems.

Mini Project Report on “Courier Services”

1.1 MOTIVATION

1 – PACKAGES ARRIVE THAT VERY SAME DAY

Most same day courier services will collect and deliver your shipment within that very same day,
something that cannot be guaranteed by the postal service. Here at Speeder rate collects.

2 – CONVENIENCE FOR THE CUSTOMERS

A successful business relies on happy customers, so make ordering products from the company
even more convenient by adding delivery on that very day. Within hours, the customer will be in
receipt of their products. Two-day delivery and overnight shipping are so old things. Why not
add further convenience, and schedule any regular same day deliveries in advance basis.

3 – MINIMIZE THE OWN VEHICLE EXPENSES

Reduce the costs of operating the business vehicles and reduce wear and tear by hiring a same day
courier. Not only will it prevent staff having to leave the business premises for potentially hours
on end, but it will also cut cost for fuel, repairs and maintenance.

4 – PACKAGES ARE DELIVERED ANY TIME

While one can’t expect an in-house staff member to make a delivery at early hours on a holiday
same day couriers provide a 24-hour service, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This is especially
useful for those businesses providing emergency and time-critical packages such as legal
documentation or medication.

5 – IMPROVE CUSTOMER LOYALTY

Customer loyalty is at the heart of every business, and what better way to nurture loyalty than
with same day delivery of a much needed or highly desired product. Retailers are facing stiff
competition, so being able to respond immediately is a sure-fire way to boost customer
satisfaction and ultimately retain their customer

6 – SAVE MONEY IN OTHER AREAS OF THE BUSINESS

Department of C.S.E [Type text] K.L.E.I.T .Hubballi

Mini Project Report on “Courier Services”

In addition to cutting vehicle expenses, using a courier has the potential to reduce other business
overheads too. For instance, if one has an in-house delivery team, one could end up paying more
in payroll taxes, overtime pay, employee benefits, paid time off and sick leave, potentially
outweighing any profits from sales. With a same day courier, one can reduce the size of one’s
own fleet and drastically cut costs.

7 – ESSENTIAL FOR TIME-CRITICAL CONSIGNMENTS

Where a package is urgent, a courier is the only convenient option besides delivering the item
oneself. Widely used in both the aerospace and healthcare sectors, sending urgent and even
confidential consignments is quick and easy with a professional and reliable same day courier.

8 – REDUCE LIABILITY AND RISK

In the unfortunate event that a member of one’s own staff was to have an accident making a
delivery, and was found to be at fault, the liability falls back on one’s business and insurance
provider. This can be a headache with financial implications. With a courier, one’s own liability
and risks are greatly reduced, as the courier company covers such a service with its own insurance
policy.

9 – ON-DEMAND

If the business only finds itself to have occasional urgent delivery requirements, there is simply
no point in investing in a fleet of drivers and vehicles. Instead, opt for a reputable same day
courier service only when they need them!

10 – PEACE OF MIND AND TRACEABILITY

Technology has changed the face of courier deliveries. One can track and trace one’s
consignments every step of the way using online services like the Speeded tracker. Will even
receive instant proof of delivery, complete with an electronic signature once the parcel has
arrived.

1.2 LITERATURE REVIEW

According to Systematic, cargo ship or freighter is any sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo,
goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's seas
and oceans each year; they handle the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually
specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load
and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built of welded steel, and with
some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped.

1.3 EXISTING SYSTEM

The existing system is not totally automated. Though the system is computerized to a particular
extent, it has to do a lot of manual work. The different processes involved are:

 To maintain details of bookings manually.

 Calculate salaries of the employees.
 To maintain details of the incoming couriers.
 To maintain returns details.
 To maintain out return details.

Nowadays, people are very busy and they don’t find much time to go to a dealer to get products.
But they need to buy products. And most of the people are accessing Internet.

1.4 PROPOSED SYSTEM:

 This Courier Services System have different modules.

 The login section will have login facility for the admin who will operate this system and
online tracking system of consignment and shipping detail for domestic shipping.
 While taking orders from its customers, it will take all the details of its customers who is
placing the orders and all the details for the recipient such as its address, name, mobile
number.

1.6 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:

1. Reduction in Transport Expenses

Courier services take care of your firm’s business shipping concerns. It, therefore, means that
you no longer have to use your fleet to manage company deliveries. Your business can, therefore,
make savings on vehicle expenses that include fuel, maintenance and repair costs. It further helps
reduce the cost of hiring personnel to operate the delivery system.

2. Transfer of Risks and Liabilities

Every delivery made by the firm is to be secured from loss or damage. If the condition of the
package is tampered with, the company is liable. Outsourcing of these small business shipping
needs transfers the risks and liabilities to the courier service provider. Therefore, your business
can make additional savings on costs incurred to insure and secure the products.

3. Ability to Concentrate on the Core Business

Relying on courier entities to make your deliveries affords you time and resources to focus on
your core business. This has a positive impact on productivity, efficiency, and profitability, all
pillars of a company’s success story.

4. Fast delivery services

A significant portion of courier services providers incorporate speed and professionalism as part
of their trademark. Fast deliveries boost the customer confidence in your brand. Sales will go up
and with it, more revenue for the business.

5. Great Value for Money

Professional courier firm’s offer customized delivery services. Depending on your small business
shipping needs, they can tailor their delivery packages to suit your situation. Entities with large
and heavier products to be delivered stand to gain more when it comes to cost-efficiency.

6. Access to Additional Services

Well established courier companies offer other services other than making deliveries. These
packages include providing logistical solutions and warehousing facilities to their clients. It is
more beneficial to your establishment to have access to various services from one provider. You
stand to gain from several discounts offered by the courier firm.

7. Reliability

Several delivery services are on call on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a guarantee of
continuous shipping of products to your clients. Your customers, therefore, are not limited to
making orders within your firm’s operational hours. Your company makes considerable savings
from having to pay delivery agents an overtime fee if they operate beyond their contractual hours.

Courier services are, therefore, important to businesses. Hiring professionals goes a long way in
saving you time, money and the hustle of managing your deliveries. The Flagship Courier
Solutions website has more online resources and references available.

DISADVANTAGES:

1. Weather related problems may lead to speedy and timely delivery of consignment is the
major problem
2. Employee is are mainly underpaid and not of permanent one so it may effect the
customers services
3. Competition of well established companies to the non established one will affect the
guaranteed services to the customers

Department of C.S.E [Type text] K.L.E.I.T .Hubballi

Mini Project Report on “Courier Services”

4. Difficult identification of fake customers

5. While transportation, the safety of the consignment is difficult and cost effective and may
lead to damage to the consignment which is bit difficult to control.

1.7 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Keeping record of parcels in a courier service company and their delivery information is carried
out manually. A lot of files are opened for daily record of parcels received or delivered. This
litters the office with much paper documents. Most often records are misplaced and when a client
comes to collect his parcel, he\she spend some hours waiting for confirmation of the parcel.
Hence delay is bound to occur while delivering parcel to customers. Also, customers must visit
the post office before they can purchase stamps or any other item.

1.8 OBJECTIVES

 Nowadays it’s very important to receive and send many things like important furniture,
electronic items, gifts and many more.
 Courier service system is very easy and allows many users to perform the job
simultaneously.
 The courier service system is all about delivering a product to its destination with the help
of their personal details like the address of the receiver and other details.
 The cost is decided depending on the product and the weight of the product.
 We also provide an option of quick delivery but it costs a little more.
 The user will always receive a message whenever his/her order is dispatched or delivered
or canceled.
 It makes the user work easier.
 Always deliver the packages on time - every time.
 To achieve consistently the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
 Reliability, speed of service, coverage area and value for money are some of the criteria
on which the service provided by a courier company is evaluated.

CHAPTER 5

PROJECT TESTING AND VALIDATION

Testing is a set of activities that can be planned and conducted systematically. A strategy for
software testing must be both high-level and low-level testing that validates major system
functions against customer requirements. Some of the types of testing strategies:

Unit Testing

Unit Testing focuses on the smallest unit software design module. The unit test is always
white box oriented. The tests occur as a part of unit testing are testing the module interface,
examining the local data structures, testing the boundary conditions, execution of all
independent paths and testing error-handling paths.

Integration Testing

Integration testing is a systematic technique of integrating the modules or a program

structure at the same time of conducting tests to uncover the errors associated with interfacing.
Scope of testing involves both top-down testing and bottom-up testing.

Performance Testing

Timing for both read and update transactions should be gathered to determine whether system
functions are being performed in an acceptable timeframe.

System Testing

System testing tests completely integrated system to verify that it need its requirements. The main
aim of system testing is to check the behavior of the system as defined by the project, to verify
against the specified requirements.

Department of C.S.E [Type text] K.L.E.I.T .Hubballi

Mini Project Report on “Courier Services”

Acceptance Testing

Acceptance testing is done when the product is completely ready to be delivered. Here the tester
has to think like a client and test the software with respect to the user needs, requirements and
business processes and determine, whether the software can be handed over the testing team so
that the client has confidence in the system.

Validation Testing

Validation is the process of evaluating a system or component during or at the end of the
development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. Validation testing
is an important testing, which is carried out before the software is handed over to the customer.
The aim of validation testing is to ensure that the software product is made according to the
requirements of the client and does indeed fulfill the intended purpose. So that the software
product is thoroughly tested without any bias. Therefore, it is an important part of software
quality assurance procedures and standards.

Verification Testing

Verification is the process of evaluating a system or component during or at the end of the
development process to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the
conditions imposed at the start of the phase. Verification testing provides test planning documents
and color-coded graphs to help you to achieve the desired coverage, ranging from procedures
/function calls to safety-critical modified condition/decision coverage.

CONCLUSION

This project is aimed at developing a “courier service”. It is a system meant to maintain all the
details regarding transactions details, which includes courier details, customer details, goods
details and shipping details.

A courier delivers messages, packages and mails. Couriers are distinguished from ordinary
services by features such as speed, time, security, tracking, signature etc. The aim of this project
is to design and implement a courier service packaging and delivery that will deliver the package
to the customer as quick as possible.
