A goal I have for conferences is by the time it is my conference to have a good starting
point with my data. So that I have the opportunity to ask and make sure I am gathering my data
properly and receive any suggestions that could help further on with collecting my data.
Especially, I am going to have to transcribe three sources because they are videos, and this is
where I will get the most support for the specific example I am using in my research. One
question I do have is for the sources geared toward my general question, should I do just a text
analysis or find another source that falls into a multimodal analysis. Furthermore, I do not want
to be transcribing forever when it comes to my multimodal sources, I want to be able to pick out
what will be the most resourceful and focus just on that which will save me time. Transcribing
my sources like this will also give me a chance, if I need it, to go back and transcribe more if I
am lacking somewhere.

Outcome 1 focuses on being able to analyze, synthesize, summarize, cite, apply, and
assess writing inquiries of others. There has been multiple assignments and writings that we have
done that demonstrate this. Major assignment number 2 which was the annotated bibliography
demonstrates summarizing because I had to summarize my chosen sources for my topic. I
demonstrated citations in almost every assignment, especially each major assignment where I
had to create a work cited page. I am giving credit to the source for where i get my information
which I use to help develop my topic further as well as using the MLA format appropriately in
my papers and for my sources. I was able to assess other writing in class and at home when I
researched for my sources and a specific example such as the Peri Klass article and we analyzed
which community of practice she is in. Lastly, intertextual writing that I feel I used is making
sure all my sources are related to my topic and not going in opposite directions of ideas and
support the writer’s goals. Commented [1]: excellent example of the work you
could for the cover letter. just make sure to cite specific
pathways from the department website too
Outcome 2 focuses on engaging in writing that is meaningful to a specific community. I
was able to demonstrate development and framing towards this outcome in each major
assignment where I posed the question inquiry that I am looking towards. Then being able to
work flexibly and adjust to what I found and any other limits. Especially, I didn’t like the
original topic I did in major assignment number 1 and I had to complete change and synthesize a
new topic in major assignment two and three. I feel I did a completely new revision from the
Morales

number one research plan to number three research proposal because I had to create something
new and only go based off my annotated bibliography. HOwever, I also revised major
assignment one with new ideas and focuses on the little aspects that made a difference. I also had
to support my topic with multiple and various sources such as using the library resources, textual
and multimodal analysis which I will demonstrate further into major assignment number four.
Outcome 2 wants me to develop and employ proper research and analyzation which is definitely
a continuous process through class assignments, readings, and major assignments such as doing a
case study analysis in class for example.

Reading Response 5

According to Saldaña, code are words or phrases that you can make for yourself to
understand to highlight main points of a text. It can be different for everybody, because you
create it just for you to understand not others. Coding can be very short or very long, it depends
on how you want to write the information you are looking at. Coding is very much so not just
labeling information, but linking them together. Saldaña states that, "rarely is the first cycle of
coding data perfectly attempted. The second cycle of recoding further manages, filters,
highlights, and focuses the salient features of the qualitative data record" (Saldaña 8). The goals
of coding can vary for each person but it helps with data reduction, and makes it overall easy to
read and understand. As well as, guiding you from data to an idea and forming other ideas and
thoughts.

Some specific examples from what gets coded that I could possibly apply to my research
is the cultural practices. That focuses on occupational tasks which I could possibly relate to
lawyers since being a lawyer is an occupation. I could also apply roles to my research because a
lawyer is playing a role in the courtroom and working hard at that job.

Episode 3 The Dream Team 3:51-4:28

1 Marcia Clark: Good afternoon.

2 I'm Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark, and what I will outline for you today
3 are my office's charges against Mr. Orenthal James Simpson in the murders of
4 Nicole Brown Simpson and Mr. Ronald Lyle Goldman on the evening of June 12, 1994.
5 [over TV]: I think the facts speak for themselves.
6 Simpson's blood was found at Bundy.
7 Nicole's blood was found at Rockingham.
Morales

8 And both Nicole and Ronald's blood were found in the Bronco.
9 Simpson will be charged with the premeditated deaths of both victims,
10 and that is precisely what we will prove.
11 Female reporter: What about the Bronco chase?
12 Male Reporter: Do you think he was escaping to Mexico?
13 Female Reporter: Are there plans to charge anyone else?
14 Marcia Clark: Mr. Simpson is charged alone, because he is the sole murderer.
15 Male Reporter: Is death penalty on the table?
16 Marcia Clark: I'd say everything is on the table.

Episode 4 100% Not Guilty 1:56- 3:28

1 Johnnie: Black men obviously are our allies.

2 Mr. Simpson, a hero in the community.
3 And I'm confident that people will assume he couldn't have committed such a
4 ghastly crime.
5 But black women, on the other hand, might be a problem.
6 They don't like their men marrying white girls.
7 Robert Kardashian: Is that true?
8 Christopher: Why are you looking at me?
9 Johnnie: Well, I... But I believe the generalization is accurate.
10 Black women resent successful black men marrying outside the community.
11 We need to limit that group.
12 Robert Shapiro: That analysis is smart.
13 The prosecution thinks they have the upper hand, but they don't.
14 Because we have you.
15 And you know how these people think.
16 Johnnie "These people."
17 Bob, let me give you a helpful piece of advice.
18 On this case, you need to choose your vernacular very, very carefully.
19 Robert Shapiro: Mea culpa.
20 Okay, but the important thing is that we work together.
21 When we face the prelim judge, we want to come out swinging.
22 We concede to nothing. If Marcia Clark wants to go to the bathroom, we object.
23 If they say the sky is blue, hearsay.
24 Nothing will be admitted without challenge and provocation.

I have yet to start coding on my gathered data but I will soon. I want to finish gathering the rest of
my data first. The coding method that I think I want to use for the activity today is in vivo coding to take
specific sayings out of my data. All my data is from people who are talking in a documentary and the
actual OJ Simpson trial. My plan is to look for key moments in the data that will help with writing and
supporting my research topic. I can pick out ideal phrases that demonstrate what I am looking for based
on what I read about techniques lawyers should possess in a courtroom.

I think that coding will help with writing my scholarly article because I will have an easier time
looking at my data quickly to know what exactly I need to support my research and answer it. Coding will
also allow me to break down and analyze the text better to make sure that I am understanding the
information properly in order to connect ideas together. I am not sure if I will use coding for anything else
besides content, I will decide as I write my paper.

*Note to self*- the data is showing the moments the prosecutors are working in the courtroom, look at
what they are saying to compare to what makes a good lawyer and techniques. Then connect to how they
presented their side, ultimately led to their failure.

Discussion Questions to start

What do the main themes or patterns you found in your data mean?
Main themes and patterns I have picked up so for in my data is the prosecutors tend to have the
same approach in every instance and don’t have a variety in their approach compared to the defending
side. I have looked too much into the exact tactics used by the prosecutors and what my article data states,
but I will in order to get a further analysis on patterns I see across all my data.
How do they contribute to the ongoing conversation in Writing studies?
Morales

The patterns that I have picked up so far contributes to the ongoing conversation in writing
studies is how the prosecutors’ are speaking in court and how they are saying and asking their
information. As well as, I am able to pick up on the typical things that all lawyers should possess while
speaking and how it is growing as a profession in today’s world.

Outcome 3 is similar to the literacy tasks of the Writing about Writing when it states that we
should be able to interpret our findings from research in order to produce arguments. The literacy tasks in
the book states that "the act of writing helps make new knowledge…intertextuality, bringing existing
texts together in new ways" (WaW 707). Our arguments are going to be presented sometimes as new
ideas from what we learned in order to produce information to be used to enhance our writings and
arguments. Furthermore, outcome 4 is also similar to the literacy tasks in the book when it states we
examine our own thoughts with response to our reading through the course, we are always improving.
The book states that "writing is enhanced by mindfulness and reflection- a writer thinking about what
they are actually doing" (WaW 707). Both outcomes have similarities to the literacy tasks in Writing
about Writing.

with to get my results. I know once I sit down and actually read through and process everything and how I
want to approach it and write it, I will be able to write my cover letter and rationales. One thing I must
remember to do is cite specific pathways as stated in one of the previous writings above when It comes to
