Should not Bring Mobile Phone to School

No phone sign – Should you bring to school?

Recently most people own mobile phone. Why does mobile phone user increase dramatically in recent
years? First, the feature and functions has increased. Mobile phone is not used just for calling, but
sending text, taking pictures, recording videos, accessing internet, playing games and much more.
Second, mobile phone has also become a lot cheaper. Now this communication device does not only fill
the pocket of adult but also teenager and student. Even a lot phones are intentionally designed to
teenaged market. However should they be allowed to bring them to school?
Many schools do not allow students to bring cell phones to school. It is very reasonable because bringing
phone to school potentially disrupts the learning process. Most students use cell phones irresponsibly.
They use cell phones to talk to their friend during class time. They also use the calculator and camera
features in the class as well. Those potentially lead less concentration in the time of learning and teaching
process.
Students go to school to learn and behave fair way. Mobile phones provide a large temptation to cheat in
tests. They can communicate to anyone and almost anywhere in the world. Because of the small size of
the cell phone, students can send a text quietly and discreetly. The text can go unnoticed anywhere to get
help on answering tests, homework, and other class assignment. Learning in school is to behave fair not
cheating.
Therefore, schools should ban students from bringing their cell phones. However it should be done fairly.
In case of an emergency some student need a call for help, providing easy access to phone is better.
SCHOOL UNIFORM

School uniforms are dress codes that are determined by the teaching institutions and students have to
follow the designed code obediently everyday. Many people believe that school uniforms should be
applied but the others don’t.

Example of discussion text about school uniform

Uniforms have various advantages for both the family and the child. A united school apparel can relief a
financial stress of the backs of many families. As kids tend to compete and imitate each other, the race of
following new trends in fashion or, providing different attire for every school day is considered a financial
burden, not every family can afford it.

Additionally, a uniform creates a sense of equality between all pupils. Young kids tend to judge others
according to their look and what they wear. Uniting their school attire will draw their attention to other
criteria and, the only advantage of one student over another would be personality, academic achievement
or being good at sports.

On the other hand, as repetition can lead to boredom, children can get frustrated of wearing same thing to
school every day. Also, prevent their first steps of individuality by taking away their right to choose what to
wear on their own free well.

In conclusion, I believe uniforms aren’t meant to suppress the creativity or freedom of children. It helps
redirecting kids’ creativity towards more important things than outer look, and waive financial burden of
their families.
Giving Children Homework; Pro and Con

There are a lot of discussion as to whether children should be given homework or not. Is it enough for
children having time to study at school or needing additional time in home for study after school time?

Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue that children have
their hobbies which they want to do after school, such as sport or music. A further point they make is that
a lot of homeworks are pointless and does not help the children learn at all.

However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers argue that it is
important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support from the teacher. They
say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and think about what they have learned in
school.

Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done. It makes sense to send
home tasks like independent reading or further writing task which do not need the teacher support.

I think, on balance, that some homework is good idea but that should only given at the weekend when
children have more time.
Pros and Cons of Smoking Bans

Smoking ban policies are implemented in some American states and cities but the contentions on
whether they are necessary and relevant are still heard from supporters and critics. Restrictions
on cigarette smoking can be traced back as early the 16th century and up to now, this issue
remains to be controversial. To get an idea on how people are taking smoking bans, here are
some of the views expressed by proponents and opponents.

Advocates for smoking bans claim that passing a policy to prohibit smoking in public places can
lessen the possibility of second-hand smoke being inhaled by non-smokers. The supporters also
say that states and cities which have non-smoking policies and prohibited smoking in restaurants
and public indoor spaces have better indoor air quality then the cities which still allow smoking
public. With restricting smoking, supporters posit that it will decrease the waste since there will
be lesser cigarette butts and lesser toxic garbage that can be stuck in water systems. It is also
believed by the supporters that it can lessen the chance of influencing others to take on the habit.

For many smokers, smoking bans is one of the government’s ways of interfering in their
lifestyle. They find this offensive because they believe that, since smoking is not a crime, the
government nor anyone else should not have a say about what they do and limit their freedom. In
principle, smoking bans aren’t effective since they will make people just avoid places with
smoking bans and smoke elsewhere rather than to quit or at least to reduce their tobacco
consumption. Implementing smoking bans also can be very difficult. There are many people and
even establishments that don’t respect the ban mainly because the penalties aren’t so stiff and
won’t get offenders into too much trouble.

These are just some of the pros and cons of smoking bans. Government officials, business
owners, and ordinary citizens should weigh them carefully to decide if smoking bans are worth
implementing or not.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Internet

The internet is a technology that has revolutionized the entire world. The way that we think,
conduct business, communicate, and entertain ourselves, have all changed dramatically because
of internet. The web can be accessed easily anywhere and everywhere. It is difficult to imagine
our world without the internet, but would it be better? It’s hard to truly break down the effects of
the internet on society, but the best way to start is by examining all of the benefits and drawbacks
that we know of.

Internet has some advantages for human being. First, internet provides unlimited access to
Information. Anything you need to know can be found and learned on the internet. There are
millions websites that provide different types of topics. Second, Internet can bridge the culture
gap. People can connect to people all over the world because of internet connection. Third,
internet gives us a big opportunity to develop business and marketing. The ability to reach wider
markets, collect valuable research on potential customers, and conduct business all over the
world, has created a virtual business boom in history of mankind.

In spite of having those advantages, internet has also some disadvantages. First, Internet is a
potential breeding ground for Illegal activity. Since everyone can access internet easily, illegal
activity can also be done more easily through this technology. Second, the world is becoming
more dependent to internet. All of our important information such as our medical records,
criminal records, educational records, and finance records are very dependent on the security of
the sites that they reside on. So if one virus is designed well enough to break through the
security, it can shut down the economy. The last, children are vulnerable and exposed by the
internet. Pornographic material is the most prominent, and children can very easily stumble upon
these types of websites and be exposed to things that they should not be.

In conclusion, internet and its both advantages and disadvantages are now happening in our
world. If we use it wisely, we will get so many advantages and vise versa.
Do Teenagers Really Need a Mobile Phone?

Nowadays, mobile phones are becoming an extremely popular electronic for people. They are
also becoming more technologically sophisticated; most can take and share pictures and videos
and connect to the Internet for web surfing. Many teenagers are becoming cell phone owners,
however. It’s debatable whether a teenager actually needs a mobile phone, but mostly they will
say that a phone was essential to their happiness and social standing. Without a mobile phone,
the average teenager is unable to function–they can’t talk to their friends and life just isn’t worth
living. But before you give in and rush off to buy your petulant teenager a brand new iPhone,
read the following list.

One of the reasons of letting a teenager have a mobile phone is because one way of making a
teenager do exactly what you want is by using a combination between bribery and blackmail.
They will do what you want easily if you offer to put more data on their mobile phone. Second
reason is that mobile phone can also be an excellent way of staying in touch with a teenager
when they are away from home. Third, many cell phones enable the teenager to access internet.
By using this feature, teenagers can obtain answers to questions very quickly and easily. The
last, if a teenager has a mobile phone, they can use it to call for help in a sticky situation for
some reason. In such condition, having a cell phone handy could be a lifesaver.

In spite of having some advantages, letting teenagers have a mobile phone has also some
disadvantages. First, cheating can be done more easily by using mobile phone since students can
search or text the answers under their desks during tests. Second, mobile phones can be very
distracting from some important activities in a child’s life such as studying, doing homework, or
even crossing the street. Third, sexual content which can be accessed easily is also an issue for
parents to consider before giving a mobile phone for their child.

Everything must have its good and bad effect, and mobile phone must too. We need to be wise to
use such a sophisticated technology in our lives. As parents, we can set guidelines for our
children on when they are able to use their cell phones or give a suitable phone for their age so
that we can get more advantages from purchasing a mobile phone for our children.
Tablets vs Books

Fast development of modern technologies such as computer, cell phone and tablets bring many
advantages in human life. Almost every sector such as work, entertainment, and education are
now depending on technology. In educational sector, for example, there is a policy to use tablets
to replace textbooks. This policy makes a major debate among society. Some people agree that
tablets will make teaching-learning process better but some other thinks not.

Among those who agree, tablets bring some benefits. First, tablets help students learn more
material faster. Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a
learning objective by 30-80%, according to the US Department of Education and studies by the
National Training and Simulation Association. Second, tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks
on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage
of books and classroom materials. The average tablet contains anywhere from 8 to 64 gigabytes
(GB) of storage space. Third, tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in
print textbooks. Tablets give users the ability to highlight and edit text and write notes without
ruining a textbook for the next user. Tablets have a search function, a backlighting option to read
in low light, and a built-in dictionary. Interactive diagrams, games and videos increase student
creativity, motivation, attentiveness, and engagement with classroom activities.

In other hand, people who disagree with the use of tablets point out several reasons. First,
handheld technological devices including tablets are associated with a range of health problems.
Handhelds contribute to Computer Vision Syndrome, which causes eyestrain, headaches, blurred
vision, and dry eyes, according to the American Optometric Association. Second, using tablets is
more expensive than using print textbooks. School will require purchasing hardware (the tablet)
and software (the textbooks), building new wi-fi infrastructure, and training teachers and
administrators how to use the technology. A broken tablet also requires an experienced
technician to fix, which can be costly and time-consuming. Plus, tablets constantly need
charging, increasing electricity demands on schools and the need for new electrical outlets.
Third, tablets have too many distractions for classroom use. Students may pay attention to apps,
email, games, and websites instead of their teachers. Tablets also enable students to cheat on
schoolwork. Students can easily avoid reading and analyzing texts on their own because they can
quickly look up passages in an e-textbook and search for answers on the internet.

In conclusion, tablets indeed bring so many advantages in education especially in teaching

learning process. However, we must see the other factors whether tablets are suitable to be used
in educational institution now or later. We cannot deny that tablets are so expensive with its
entire means of support. It is not fair if we allocate the entire budget to tablets while there are so
many schools which need more important facilities such as school buildings, classrooms,
libraries, clean toilets, and so forth.
Is National Examination Necessary?

National examination has become a hot topic to discuss in Indonesia. The main controversy
regarding to national examination is whether or not it is necessary to continue the national exams
(UN). Some other debates focus on whether the quality of Indonesian education depends on the
national exam and whether the quality of the Indonesian education system will worsen without
national exam.

For those who support the national exam, they believe that the quality of the Indonesia education
system will get worse without the national exam, so they try to defend the current system. They
also believe that national exam can be used to measure how far educational program designed by
the government works.

However, for those who disagree with national exam, the result of national exam can’t give the
clear image of students’ ability in general since the issues of cheating always happen.
Furthermore, the national exam only measures a small portion of students’ competence in
specific subjects, and does not measure students’ competences throughout the semester.

Above all, the national examination can still be used as an instrument to evaluate the level of
students’ cognitive competence in certain subjects, on a national scale.
Is Television Good or Bad for People?

Some people claim that television is a best friend, while others think of television as the root of
all evil. Many people blame the television for society's violence and misinformation, while
others see it as a rich resource for education and entertainment. Who is right? For those who are
asking this question, you will find the costs and benefits of watching television in the following
paragraphs.

In this busy, expensive life, television is an easy and cheap source of entertainment and
information. From some entertainments provided by televisions’ channel we can relax ourselves
after having a hand-full day of work. By watching international news, we will always be up-to-
date with breaking news around the world. Do-it-yourself shows can also give us easy access to
do many interesting activities in our lives.

However, sex, crime, and violence contents in television may have negative effects on
impressionable children. Children who are exposed violent acts continuously are more likely to
display violent behavior in their lives. Ongoing studies have shown a lasting correlation between
watching violence on television in childhood and aggression that continues into adulthood.
Moreover, watching too much television is not good for your health and makes you antisocial.
Studies have shown that excessive TV watching (more than 3 hours a day) can contribute to
sleep difficulties, behavior problems, lower grades, and other health issues. Watching television
fills the time a person might have spent doing important, enriching things like interacting
socially with other human beings, being physically active, discovering the outdoors, etc.

Like other modern technologies, television has both advantage and disadvantage. Watching
television wisely and not to be too dependent to it are the ways to get more benefits from
watching television.
