Dear Mrs. Johnson,

I am your son’s 8th grade English Language Arts teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. I
have been teaching at Sunset Middle School for seven years now and cannot wait for
many more. There are so many young minds I have the opportunity to mold, and your
son is one of them!

My goal with all of my students is to show them the importance of this class while
keeping it fun and interesting for them. Because these students are going to be going to
high school next year, I think it is necessary to teach them responsibility. Their high school
teachers are going to expect a lot from them: participating in class, being respectful, and
getting their assignments done well and on-time. That being said, George’s 7th grade
ELA teacher, Ms. Reader, has informed me that he struggled to pass her class last year. I
am willing to work with both you and George to make sure he stays on-track throughout
the school year and passes this class.

This year, we will be working on grammar, writing, and projects based on what the
students are reading. Grammar will be a daily activity, along with reading for about 10 to
15 minutes. While reading, students will keep a journal to write down their thoughts or
any information they feel to be important. All students will be given sufficient class-time to
work on any assignments. If the assignment is not finished during class, I expect it to be
finished at home prior to the due date.

For my class, I ask that each student has a 1-subject spiral notebook, a pencil, and a pen.
If anyone is unable to attain these materials for any reason, I am able to provide them. All
I expect from the students is that they are respectful of everyone and willing to
participate.

Lastly, my grading scale is as follows:

≥90% = A

≥80% = B

≥70% = C

≥60% = D

≤59% = F
