About David Russell (Guitarist)
David Russell (born 1953 in Glasgow) is a classical guitarist. He plays Matthias
Dammann guitars. Widely known for his near flawless tone and diverse repertoire,
Russell is one of the most distinguished and accomplished classical guitarists in the
world.

When Russell was five years of age, his family moved from Glasgow to Menorca, where he became

interested in the guitar, imitating the likes of Andres Segovia and Julian Bream.

Today, Russell resides in Galicia, but spends most of his time touring, appearing in such cities as Barcelona,

Newyork City, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto, Amsterdam, and Denver. He is regularly

invited to play in music festivals.

David has won amateur golf tournaments, mainly in Scotland and Spain. He is an avid supporter of his local

football team, Celta de Vigo.

During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Russell won the Julian Bream Guitar Prize twice and

received a scholarship from the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. Later he won numerous international

competitions, including the Andres Segovia Competition, the Jose Ramirez Competition, and Spain's

Francisco Tarrega Competition.Russell was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London in

1997.In May 2003 he was awarded the honour of being made Adopted Son of Es Migjorn, the town on

Menorca where he grew up.In November 2003 he was given the Medal of Honour of the Conservatory of

the Balearics.In 2005, he won a Grammy Award for best instrumental soloist in classical music for his CD

Aire Latino.

Since 1995, Russell has had a contract with Telarc International. He has recorded a CD featuring the music
of Paraguayan guitarist-composer Agustin Barrios Mangore, another with the music of Spanish composer
Federico Moreno Torroba, a recording including the three Rodrigo concerti for solo guitar (Concierto de
Aranjuez, Fantasia para un Gentilhombre and Concierto para una Fiesta), Celtic Music for Guitar, Music
by Giuliani, Baroque Music, Spanish Favorites, David Russell plays Bach, Aire Latino (dedicated to music
written by Latin American composers), Spanish Legends, Air on a G-string (Baroque music only), For David
(includes only contemporary works that are dedicated to him), Sonidos Latinos, Albeniz and his most
recent, Grandeur of the Baroque.His discography also includes a recital CD with transcriptions of Bach,
Handel, and Scarlatti, an all-classical album called Nineteenth Century Music, and the complete works of

classical music.
Honorary Doctorate in Music by the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2014.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Guitar Foundation of America in 2018.
Classical guitarist David Russell is world renowned for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry,
having earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike. In recognition of his great talent
and his international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in
1997.
In May 2003 he was bestowed the great honor of being made Adopted Son of Es Migjorn, the town
in Minorca where he grew up. Later the town named a street after him, Avinguda David Russell. In
November 2003 he was given the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics. After
winning the grammy award, the town of Nigran in Spain where he resides, gave him the silver

medal of the town in an emotional ceremony. During his studies at the Royal Academy, David Russell
won twice the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. Later he won numerous international competitions, including
the Andres Segovia Competition, the Jose Ramirez Competition and Spains prestigious Francisco
Tarrega Competition. David Russell spends his time touring the world, appearing regularly at prestigi-
ous halls in main cities, such as New York, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto or Rome.
Concert-goers everywhere are in awe of his musical genius and inspired by his captivating stage
presence. His love of his craft resonates through his flawless and seemingly effortless performance. The
attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing suggest an innate understanding of what each
individual composer was working to achieve, bringing to each piece a sense of adventure.
In May 2005 he received a homage from the music conservatory of Vigo, culminating with the
opening of the new Auditorium, to which they gave the name called Auditorio David Russell.
In 2009 David was named honorary member of Amigos de la Guitarra, the oldest guitar society in

Spain. A prolific recording artists, his collection includes seventeen CDs with Telarc International. The
New York Times wrote about his performance: "... Mr. Russell made his mastery evident without ever
deviating from an approach that places musical values above mere display. It was apparent to the
audience throughout the recital that Mr. Russell possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension".
Upon hearing play in London, André s Segovia wrote: " My congratulations on your musicality and
guitaristic technique".
