Sentences: Simple, Compound, and Complex

Experienced writers use a variety of sentences to make their writing interesting and lively. Too
many simple sentences, for example, will sound choppy and immature while too many long
sentences will be difficult to read and hard to understand.
This page contains definitions of simple, compound, and complex sentences with many simple
examples. The purpose of these examples is to help the ESL/EFL learner to identify sentence
basics including identification of sentences in the short quizzes that follow. After that, it will be
possible to analyze more complex sentences varieties.
SIMPLE SENTENCE
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it
expresses a complete thought. In the following simple sentences, subjects are in yellow, and
verbs are in green.

A. Some students like to study in the mornings.

B. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon.
C. Alicia goes to the library and studies every day.
The three examples above are all simple sentences. Note that sentence B contains a compound
subject, and sentence C contains a compound verb. Simple sentences, therefore, contain a
subject and verb and express a complete thought, but they can also contain a compound subjects
or verbs.
COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The
coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of
the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always
preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in
green, and the coordinators and the commas that precede them are in red.

A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.

B. Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.
C. Alejandro played football, for Maria went shopping.
The above three sentences are compound sentences. Each sentence contains two independent
clauses, and they are joined by a coordinator with a comma preceding it. Note how the
conscious use of coordinators can change the relationship between the clauses. Sentences B and
C, for example, are identical except for the coordinators. In sentence B, which action occurred
first? Obviously, "Alejandro played football" first, and as a consequence, "Maria went
shopping. In sentence C, "Maria went shopping" first. In sentence C, "Alejandro played
football" because, possibly, he didn't have anything else to do, for or because "Maria went
shopping." How can the use of other coordinators change the relationship between the two
clauses? What implications would the use of "yet" or "but" have on the meaning of the
sentence?
COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A
complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a
relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. In the following complex sentences, subjects are in
yellow, verbs are in green, and the subordinators and their commas (when required) are in red.

A. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page.
B. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.
C. The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
D. After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.
E. Juan and Maria went to the movies after they finished studying.
When a complex sentence begins with a subordinator such as sentences A and D, a comma is
required at the end of the dependent clause. When the independent clause begins the sentence
with subordinators in the middle as in sentences B, C, and E, no comma is required. If a comma
is placed before the subordinators in sentences B, C, and E, it is wrong.
Note that sentences D and E are the same except sentence D begins with the dependent clause
which is followed by a comma, and sentence E begins with the independent clause which
contains no comma. The comma after the dependent clause in sentence D is required, and
experienced listeners of English will often hear a slight pause there. In sentence E, however,
there will be no pause when the independent clause begins the sentence.
COMPLEX SENTENCES / ADJECTIVE CLAUSES
Finally, sentences containing adjective clauses (or dependent clauses) are also complex because
they contain an independent clause and a dependent clause. The subjects, verbs, and
subordinators are marked the same as in the previous sentences, and in these sentences, the
independent clauses are also underlined.

A. The woman who(m) my mom talked to sells cosmetics.

B. The book that Jonathan read is on the shelf.
C. The house which AbrahAM Lincoln was born in is still standing.
D. The town where I grew up is in the United States.
Adjective Clauses are studied in this site separately, but for now it is important to know that
sentences containing adjective clauses are complex.

Protect The Environment

Do you know that our earth is not natural anymore? Do you know what are the bad effects of it?
And do you know what is responsible for it? Bacause of that problems, everyone has to
responsible to keep the balance of the earth. There are many things that we can do which are
saving water, stop using plastic bags, and living “greenly”.

First, we can stop using plastic bags. Nowadays, people like to use plastic bags. In fact, the
production of plastic bags consume millions of gallons of oil that could be used for fuel and
heating. Hundreds of thousands of whales, dolphins, sea turtles and other marine mammals die
every year because they ingest the small toxic particle in plastic. So if we don’t use plastic bags,
how do we bring our groceries home? Actually, we can use reusable bags made of materials that
don’t harm the environment. We don’t need to discard them after each use. Stop using plastic
bags would make a great difference in the number of plastic in garbage dumps.

Another way to save our earth is saving water. Water shortage is the biggest problem. The
government has adviced to save water. We can take showers insteads of bath for 5 minutes only
and turn off the water while soaping body.

Last but not the least, we have to live “greenly”. Walking, biking, using public transportation,
and driving less can reduce the gas that causes green house effects. Beside that, they save our
money and make us healthy. To converse energy, we can turn off the lamp and air conditioner
when you don’t need them. We can also save paper by using e-books, email. And buy a new
things when you actually need them. If they break, just repair them.

We have understood the ways to save our earth. I think if all people around the world contribute
to do those ways, our earth can be saved and disaster, unwanted accidents, high temperature that
occur nowadays can decrease. So that, earth does’t destroy and we can live happily.

Air pollution has been polluting the air in almost the entire area of the city, both derived from
industrial activities and from the activity - motor vehicle traffic. The largest air pollution
generated by the activity of motor vehicle traffic. Contribution of motor vehicle exhaust gas as
a source of air pollution reached 60-70%, compared with the industry ranges between 10-15%.
While the rest comes from households, waste incineration, forest fires or field and others.

The number of private vehicles continues to increase every year. The increase in the number of
private vehicles are not comparable to public awareness of the importance of keeping the
environment free from pollution. Many factors influence the increase in the number of private
vehicles,

is familiar in Yogyakarta. I havea desire to create a better environment. Once we observe from
different viewpoints, it seems the use of the school bus is the right thing to reduce private vehicle
among students. School buses can be boarded students from leaving school to school. The use of
school buses as mass transportation has the following benefits:

1. decrease air pollution in Yogyakarta

2. Reducing the number of private vehicles
3. Educating students to be able to socialize with their friends regardless of their social status
4. Students can streamline the time so it does not have a reason to come late to school
5. Exercising independence

For that we need a variety of preparation for the realization of the use of school buses with
facilities that support the interests of students to use school buses as transportation in studying ,
among other things:

1. Itineraries according to the needs of students

2. The existence of stops in various strategic places in yogyakarta.
3. Imbalance between the number of school bus fleet that will operate with a number of students.
4. School bus departure time according to the schedule of the student.
5. School bus fare is affordable.
6. Comfort and safety of school buses.
7. Necessity of solving the problem between the presence of a school bus with existing public
transportation

The role of the school is needed in socializing the use of school buses as mass transport students
to make regulations regarding the mandatory use of school buses. It is not to prohibit students
use private vehicles but rather to train students to understand the impacts that arise from the use
of private vehicles are not effective and most importantly to educate students to love the
environment. Thus the desire of the use of school buses as mass transport these students, in order
to reduce air pollution in Yogyakarta through reducing the number of private vehicles among
students.

Since long time ago, people recognized cigarettes. As the scene that still exist many people
smoke cigarettes with full enjoyable. Smoking has impression and taste as something cannot be
described except they used to. Generally smoking is enjoyed by men; reality shows how many
women is doing it too. However cigarette takes high income for this country, so this rate gives
information about the high quantity of smokers.

Actually smokers realize how they spent much money for this habit. Cigarettes with addictive
composition have chained the smokers. Every day they rely on the cigarette for their activities
spirits. How pool they are? This is just about life style or something that has to follow an
environment. Everything just about personalization, nobody knows exactly.

As known and seen, smoking is habit that link people as a symbol of relation in a community/
environment in some assume. Usually, people who smoke cigarettes is an adult but in the fact
cigarettes enjoyed more by children or teenager for today. Many of teenagers are affected to
smoke although they has accepted advice from their parents.

The smokers know how big problem and high risk will appear if they smoke the cigarettes in big
quantity and for long time, absolutely. Smoking not just a habitual but to be necessary because
they addicted with nicotine and tar that include in cigarettes. The smokers in big community for
latest years are teenagers. Many reasons make the teenagers in this country to be the smokers.
The teenagers recognize a cigarette because feeling of curiosity, as life style, as symbol in a
community, and to express themselves.

The first reason is feeling of curiosity. Almost all of people have this feeling so do not be strange
if the smokers appear more from teenagers than adult. The teenagers have the big curiosity
feeling. They are tried to find out about what they feel. The teenagers as generally look at their
environment. The smoking environment introduces them with cigarettes. Almost all of them are
students of junior high school and senior high school. Actually they know how bad and
expensive this habit before. However the feeling of curiosity brought them to find out the taste of
cigarettes.

The second reason, smoking as life style. In case that life style is various. As matter fact the
teenagers in this country choose smoking as life style. How pity them? The teenagers just want
to show if they are can be achieved as smokers. This condition tells how weak their mental with
this assume.
The third reason, smoking as symbol in a community. The community that entered by the
teenagers identically free of rules. They want to feel free for everything what they done. Usually
the teenagers in free community smoke cigarettes as a symbol freedom. They will pride if they
can enter the free community. Smoking is the best way in their assumed to measure themselves
in their environment. Remember their status as students, they made mistake absolutely.

The fourth reason, smoking is the way to expresses themselves. Actually, the teenagers have
many ways to express themselves. They are creative human being in this age. But a lot of them
express themselves with smoking. Is it the best way or just to show if they can do it as adult.

Smoking has high risk for healthy, everybody knows about it well. All of the smokers enjoy the
smoking just themselves. They never think about the other one. Besides, they never know how
much they spent money. Actually smoking sometimes disturbed somebody else with the smoke
they pup out. This condition will be worse if the teenagers make smoking as the best way to find
out everything based on the reasons above. While almost the teenagers who smoke are students
and still get money from their parents. Therefore, prevent smoking as well as we can do to keep
healthy and save money for a better life.

The Film Impact for Child Psychology Development

The film has become an indispensable part of our lives, so it’s difficult to imagine the world
without any form of entertainment. Film already be current needs. And often film can addictive
people who like the stories of film.

Thus film also have problems or effect movie. The effect is enormous to the psychologi
development of children. Because children are in search of their identy. So they have a tendency
to try to imitate what they see and are considered as an their idol.

The film can’t avoid. The film industry is booming and shows no signs of relenting. The reason
why the film is so much fun respected because they open a window innumerable possibilities.

For society, film impact like propaganda, and lifestyle affects. The film successfully able to
influence viewers to a very large extent, that is exactly what the advertising industryncapitalizes
on. They use a few seconds of footage to market their products to the world. And everything we
watch and listen, influence and affect us to some degree or another. If unconcious, he left and
imprint on our souls. Because we regard the actor as a superior and perfect people. Everything
they do affects us as well.

The film have many impact for children. Not infrenquently due to the influence of the film, a
scene of a child trying to imitate what they see in movies and practiced in real life. This happens

the importance of education, medicine, the arts and politics. It also leads children to understand
more about many things. This is important to children education. Films also induce children
creativity. Film help improve their imagination. Their think about the things they see and then
they took their imagination a bit further and visualize.
The film should have negative and positive impact for children, so the parents have to vigilance
in keeping a child in order not to be easily influenced over what they saw on screen. The
influence of the film is massive. If children aren’t supposed to watch the show they saw. Some
things should be done the elderly to prevent negative film effects:

1. A time when parents accompany their child to watch the film. So when there is less worthy
scenes witnessed, parents can immediately provide an explanation to the child that shows the
film is not a true story.
2. Teach child to watch only a film that is intended for children and is not consumed watch film for
adults.

Avoid to watching violent film and other negative things, when parents beside their children.
Parents have to find the time to watch this kind of the film when the child doesn’t exist or is
already sleep.

The film does have their own points, negative or positive like everything else in this world.

prevention of any forms of substance abuse. Alcohol is not the last one in the list of these
destructive substances. It is the “companion” of any significant event occurring in the life of
modern people or even an everyday way to relax and get away from all the difficulties. People
relax and forget that they are supposed to think not only about their health but also about the
health of the people around them. This especially concerns women, as they are the ones to
deliver the next generation into the world. A woman’s organism is a lot more influenced by any
external chemical influences and alcohol becoming woman’s frequent “companion” becomes a

any person and those people who will take care of him. Some people start being exposed to
alcohol during their fetal development and therefore suffer throughout their whole lives
sometimes not even having a small hope to find their places in the world and not being even
“comparatively” independent. They cannot concentrate, talk too much and are not capable of
making proper decisions. Such people are completely helpless and unprotected. The outcomes of
alcohol abuse for the body are severe. Alcohol or sometimes called ethanol is a volatile liquid
can easily burn oxidizes and is composed of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, having the formula of
C2H5OH. Alcohol influenced the whole human body, even including the central nervous system
and the brain of a man. After the process of drinking alcohol people start feeling pleasure and
more open to the outer world. Nevertheless, even though the person feels comfortable and more
self-confident the most dangerous thing is often forgotten – alcohol’s side effects. If a person
drinks large amounts of alcohol in a very small period of time it may result in the person’s brain
being suppressed by the chemicals and lead to a fatality. If the amount of alcohol in a human
body is exceeding a person can die in his sleep, because the body will not have enough resources
to cope with the suppression. It is also extremely dangerous to combine alcohol with other
chemical substances.

3. Changes in the human organism

The changes that occur in the human organism for the reason of alcohol abuse are terrible. The
whole body is damaged and the person stops being able to either move and think properly. The
effect of alcohol throughout the period of human’s life is immense and even the lesser amount of
alcohol may cause some changes. These destructive processes, which occur inside the organism,
cause irreparable damage that it made on the genetic level. Even “social drinking” causes
changes in intellectual and behavior activity of children [2]. Heavy abuse, causing disorders has
nowadays become unbelievably widespread. All this changes throughout the period the
development of the alcohol dependency cause mental disabilities and severe changes in the
human body.

3.a. Physical changes

Very often it is said that alcohol heavy drinkers look the same. This happens because in the first
place all of them experience problems with their skin. As the vessels of the skin widen, the blood
flow to the person’s face become more intensive. This is the reason people who drink alcohol
have a flushed skin color and constantly feel that they are hot. Alcohol also often causes serious
weight problem. As a fact, alcohol prevents people from consuming healthy food on a regular
basis and it direct influences the heart of a drinker. This is one of the primary reasons why
people who prefer to drink alcohol can experience a heart failure. Another part of the body that is
directly damaged by alcohol is the liver. This is primarily due to the fact that it is liver that works
the most to “clean” the organism from the chemicals in alcohol. When alcohol get to the blood of
a person rather often, the blood in its turn damages the process of functioning of the liver cells
and some of them start dying. The majority of people do not keep in mind the fact that even a
one-time alcohol abuse makes the liver cells die, but it is the body of the person, who is not an
alcohol heavy drinker, still has time to recuperate from the damage. In case the person drinks
alcohol on a regular base the liver becomes weaker and weaker from day to day.

One other important physical sphere that is seriously damaged is the reproductive system of a
human body. The reason of this type of dysfunction is that alcohol deprives the impulses that the
nerves pass, and especially those that cause ability to erect, as for men. Women alcohol abuse it
on of the first to be prevented as the fetus changes negatively and a lot of disabled children are
born into to the world. Females metabolize alcohol very quickly and this is the primary cause of
their necessity to abstain from alcohol. The fetus is already in high danger of obtaining FAS if

perceive sounds and the direction they are coming out from. The taste and smell are lost and the
speech becomes unclear. As alcohol constantly burns the throat of the drinker in may result in
severe pain, vomiting and even cancer. The body itself starts being very weak, the muscles suffer
from atrophy, pain and spasms.

3.b. Mental changes

If a person constantly abuses alcohol it will eventually lead to a set of permanent transformations
in the brain morphology. One of the most significant transformations concerns the reduction of
the total amount of brain tissue and the growing size of the ventricles. The basic reason the body
stops being able to produce brain tissue to cope with the chemical is because it lacks natural
vitamins that a healthy body produces. Another reason because the body is deprived of vitamins
is that alcohol abusers often experience a problem of systematic eating and do not consume food
at the required time, making the body weak and unable to resist the alcohol effects. As the brain
of a person under alcohol dependency does not have enough vitamins it turns out to be the first
step to the beginning of mental retardation. What happens to a person is that he completely
losses the ability to control his behavior, his judgments become illogical and his ability to
concentrate decreases tremendously. It is common fact that alcohol very often is a “companion”
of crimes for the listed reason, as the inability to control the behavior results in extreme mood
swings and emotional outbursts. Alcohol does not let the brain properly control the
manifestations of the body, as the central nervous system becomes damaged through the
depression of the nerve cells in the brain. The cells cannot respond to the impulses and a group
of body function failures appear: anesthesia, respiratory failure, coma and death. As alcohol
destroys the central nervous system the drinker experiences impaired visual abilities, loss of pain
perception, slow reactions, impaired motor skills, altered perception of time and space and many
others.

Conclusion: The consumption of alcohol beverages has strongly entered the tradition of
celebration any significant events in the life of people. Anybody can hardly imagine celebrating
Christmas or a birthday without a gulp of champagne. Seemingly, there is nothing bad in that and
nothing bad can happen after a gulp of champagne or a gulp during a routine “social drinking”.
But the reality is cruel… Therefore even small doses of alcohol can do harm to a the human
body. Most people do not understand the consequences alcohol abuse can have of their health
nevertheless the abuse occurs primarily because people do not know the destructive power of
alcohol. The consequences of the alcohol abuse do not decrease with time, though specific
