Observation 11/20/19 Lesson Plan

Class: Kindergarten

Unit: Writer’s Workshop

Objectives: This lesson will introduce “small moments” and give students the chance to stretch out a
small moment in their writing using details.

Purpose:
1. Students will be able to use a combination of drawing and writing to narrate a small moment and
provide details to strengthen writing

ELA Standards:
● W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several
loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction
to what happened.

Materials:
1. Writing Paper
2. Book
3. ABC Chart
4. Word wall

Duration: 30 minutes

Assessment:
Informal Formative Assessment:
Teacher listens to partners discussing small moments in the book and discussing their own small moment
story. Teacher collects students’ writing and reads about their small moments.

Anticipatory Set (5-7 mins)

Tell students “We have been thinking about stories from our own lives and writing those stories on
paper. Today we are going to learn how writers catch small moments from their lives and stretch
those moments out, turning them into stories that can cross several pages.”
Remind students of a moment in a familiar book. Tell students that the author could have told the part
very quickly in a couple sentences and gives an example. Tell students, “Listen closely to how the
author stretches the moment out by telling little details.” Read a section of the familiar book to the
class. Ask students to think about what tiny details the author uses and give students PRT time. Have
students turn to a partner and share the tiny details the author used. Call on students to share what they
discussed. Tell the class that when the author tells us those tiny details, they are stretching out a small
moment.
Instructional Sequence (Include time allotted for each):

Input
Students will learn how to stretch out a small moment using details.

Modeling (20-25 mins)

Tell students about a small moment. For example: “Yesterday I went on a walk with my dog. We walked up
a hill to the park. We saw brown leaves on the ground.” Write and draw the story on the whiteboard. Model
how to use word wall and ABC chart to help spell words. Give students PRT time to think about their small
moment. Have students share their small moment with a partner. Circulate the room and listen to students’
stories. Share a student’s story with the class. Point out how they stretched out their small moment with
details. Pass out writing paper and ask students to go to their desks.
Halfway through writing time, share an example of how a student stretched out their small moment in their
writing to the class.

Checking for Understanding

While students are sharing with a partner or writing their story, ask them to read their writing and share their
small moment. Circulate the room and check in on students.
