Torah Portion | Parashat #59

Torah Cycle Yitro (Reading 1 of 1)
Parashat #59 November 23, 2019

Ar.tiy I) Reading the Torah Portion
Yitro Now it’s time to read the Torah portion. You will get the most out of the Torah portion if you have a
disciplined plan for approaching it each week. I suggest the following (although you may want to
Exodus 18:1-20:26 develop your own plan of attack). Prepare by having a pen and paper ready to take notes or by
having your computer ready. Read the Torah portion quickly just to get a bird’s-eye view of it and to
Isaiah 61:1-6
gain a general understanding of its contents. Then read it again slowly and more contemplatively.
Philippians 2:5-11 As you read it, you should keep track of 1) changes in the main storyline (plots and subplots) of the
text, 2) the introduction of new major themes you have not encountered heretofore and 3)
connections to the main themes developed in the Torah portion. Keeping track of the major themes will provide you with thoughts
to help you outline the passage later on. Recording changes in the storyline (subplots) will 1) help you more accurately interpret
Scripture and 2) see connections to themes that may be repeated in the Haftarah and Apostolic readings.

I strongly recommend that when you study these lessons you have the following tools available. 1) A Bible [all references are based
on the NKJV], 2) a printed copy of this lesson, 3) pen and paper [notebook preferred] where you can either write extra notes or
complete answers to questions where the lines in this lesson are not enough space to write on, 4) an on-line version of the Bible. I
suggest BibleGateway (https://www.biblegateway.com/). There are many instances where I will ask you to make a connection to
some other passage. The BibleGateway app has an awesome SEARCH feature to find Bible passages. Also, once you find a passage
you can use Control-F or Command-F (MAC users) to find words, numbers or phrases in the text on display. Lastly, as often as possible
. . . have a partner studying with you!

II) Outlining the Torah Portion

Now that you have read the Torah portion, it’s time to outline it. Try to divide the Torah portion into its major subject divisions.
Please limit the outline to no more than seven major headings. Also, try to limit each subject division to a short phrase. In the chart
below provide a brief phrase describing each significant change of events in the reading. Outlining will help you develop the skill of
“seeing” the themes in the text.

III) Torah Portion Discussion Questions
I have given you a number of questions to stimulate your thought about the Torah portion reading. My goal is two-fold. First, I want
to ask you questions about what the Spirit has shown me are important lessons to learn from the Torah reading. Secondly, I want to
help you develop the art of making thematic connections. This skill will develop as you practice, practice, practice. Furthermore,
once you see the benefits of making thematic connections, I’m hoping that you believe that the language of thematic connections is
Adonai’s “language.”

1. Read Exodus 18:1-12. What is the most oft repeated phrase?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Remember that one of the ways the Torah tries to capture our attention is through repetition! Notice how it
seems that Moses has gone overboard in repeating that phrase! By repeating the phrase so many times what
relationship should we be thinking about?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. How is Exodus 18:1 (And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for
Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-
law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,) thematically connected to Joseph’s life? Also, what
is the prophetic significance of this connection between Joseph and Moses?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Compare Exodus 18:1-3 with Genesis 41:45-52. What other connection can you make between Moses and
Joseph?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. Read Exodus 19:1-25. What action does Moses repeat many times?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. I’m not sure how many times Moses walked up and down the mountain, but it was a lot of walking! And I think
it’s significant that this is emphasized in this passage. See if you can count how many times Moses walked up
and down the mountain?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. We can see that Adonai wants to have a relationship with Am Yisrael (the people of Israel) yet He never speaks
directly to them! He only speaks to them through Moses. Considering that Adonai only speaks to the people
through Moses, and considering that the people can only speak to Adonai through Moses, what is the Torah trying
to teach us concerning the role Moses is fulfilling?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

8. Read Exodus 19:8-9. Explain how this verse proves (and demonstrates) that Adonai will only speak to Israel
through Moses and not directly!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9. As you can see, the people are limited in their ability to communicate or have contact with Adonai. Read Exodus
19:1-24. In what other ways does Adonai limit contact directly with the people (make a list)?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10. Thus, it seems that Adonai is limiting access to Himself! Where else in the first few chapters of book of Exodus
do we see Adonai limiting access to Himself?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

11. What reason does Adonai give Moses pertaining to why he can’t come closer to the burning bush in Exodus 3:1-
5?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

12. Can you remember any other time before Exodus 3:1-5 that the subject of Adonai’s holiness came up? Now here’s
the big question. It’s apparent that Adonai is beginning to reveal a new aspect of His character to His people.
What is the classic verse in the early chapters of Exodus that tell us Adonai is about to reveal Himself in a manner
unknown by His people heretofore?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

13. How is Exodus 3:1-5 thematically connected to Exodus 19:1-24?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As I’ve mentioned before, Adonai is revealing a new aspect of His character to His people . . . His holiness! This
will become a prominent theme in the remainder of the book of Exodus and we will need to understand it as it
relates to Messiah Yeshua and the reason for His work of redemption. Adonai never restricted the Patriarchs
from coming close to Him. They seemed to walk and talk without hindrance. However, as Adonai stated in
Exodus 6:2-3, He is about to reveal new facets of His being and His holiness if now front and center. Sinful man
cannot approach a holy God!

IV) Messiah in the Parsha

In Luke 24:25-27 and 46-47 Yeshua stated that Moses, the Prophets and the Writings all prophesied of His death, burial and
resurrection in three days. Therefore, we should expect to see teachings about Yeshua and His role in redemption throughout the
Torah. In this section I will ask you questions that will hopefully help you “see” Messiah Yeshua in the Torah portion and sometimes
the Haftarah reading as well.

1. Earlier we saw how Adonai wanted us to focus on the father-son relationship between Jethro and Moses. At this
point we should immediately think that perhaps this story is Messianic. What is the Haftarah reading for the
yearly Torah portion called Yitro? Read Isaiah 9:6-7. Whoever chose the Haftarah reading saw a connection
between it and the Torah reading. Based on the Haftarah reading (Isaiah 9:6-7), what message/significance did
they see in Moses and Yitro’s relationship?

2. How is Isaiah 9:6-7 (For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His
shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His
kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The
zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.) thematically connected to Exodus 18:1-27?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. With the help of our yearly Torah cycle reading Haftarah we can guess that Parashat Yitro is messianic. However,
there are other ways. For example, whenever you see The Sign of the Messiah you should know that the passage
you’re reading is messianic.
As we learned in the book of B'reishit (Genesis), anytime we see 1) pictures of resurrection, 2) pictures of
renewed life as a result of deliverance from impending death and 3) pictures of victory and life as a result of
death, we know the Torah is about to give us a teaching concerning the Messiah. I call these, themes of The
Resurrection and the Life, and they are especially strengthened when coupled in some manner with the number
three. The Resurrection and the Life in the Torah:
a. The first LIVING things (plants, grass, etc.) were created on day THREE!
b. The Torah's picture of the RESURRECTION of the Messiah is found in the Holy Days. The Holy Day that is
a shadow of Yeshua's RESURRECTION is the THIRD Holy Day, the Day of the Omer Wave Offering!
c. Jonah, who was in the belly of a great fish should have been dead. But on the THIRD day he came forth
ALIVE! Adonai has a great sense of humor because elsewhere He states, "death is swallowed up in
victory" (Isaiah 25:8 and I Corinthians 15:54).
d. The Akeida (binding of Isaac) found in Genesis 22—Abraham was supposed to offer Isaac as a whole burnt
offering. Although Adonai prevented him from actually sacrificing Isaac on the THIRD day, the manner in
which the Torah relates the story hints that Isaac died and was RESURRECTED. That's why Hebrews
11:17-19 says that Abraham received Isaac from the dead through RESURRECTION figuratively!
Do you see the Sign of the Messiah in today’s Torah portion? If so, please explain it in your own words. For
those of you who don’t see it, proceed to the next question and I’ll help you.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Here’s some background information to help you see the Sign of the Messiah. How are Deuteronomy 4:33 (Did
any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?), Genesis
32:30 (So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”)
and Judges 13:22 (And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”) all thematically
connected? Now, explain how you can see the Sign of the Messiah in our Torah reading.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. We have established that our Torah portion is messianic in scope and we know that Moses’ life is a
foreshadowing of the work of the Messiah, so let’s see what Moses can teach us about Yeshua. Earlier we noted
that Moses is functioning as a mediator. What is he mediating and how does it teach us about Yeshua?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. How is I Timothy 2:5 (For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus)
thematically connected to the Torah portion and how does it teach us about Yeshua?

4
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. Earlier we noted how often Moses ascended and descended the mountain in his role as covenant mediator. I
use those two words for a reason. How is John 6:38 (For I have come down [descended] from heaven, not to
do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.) thematically connected to the Torah portion and how does it
connect Yeshua and Moses?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

8. Explain how Yeshua will ascend and descend (in His mediatorial role) more than once even as Moses did.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9. Quite often, messianic passages are lurking in the shadows in the form of cryptic sayings and/or stories in the
Tanakh. We read them and many times we are totally unaware of their messianic significance. For example,
Adonai poses a riddle to us in Proverbs 30:4 (Who has ascended to heaven and descended? Who has gathered
up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all
the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know.) Now that we have
learned about Yeshua’s role in ascending and descending from heaven in relation to Moses’ role in ascending and
descending Mount Sinai and the significance of that connection, when we read Proverbs 30:4 we should
immediately recognize it as a messianic passage pertaining to Yeshua! How many connections can you make
between Proverbs 30:4 and our Torah portion AND Yeshua?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10. Do you know of a passage from the book of Psalms that mentions someone’s ascension on high?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

11. What verse in Psalm 68 identifies this psalm as a Messianic psalm? Hint - look for the Sign of the Messiah!
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

12. What passage from the New Testament proves that Psalm 68:18 is messianic and pertains to Yeshua’s ascension
into heaven after His resurrection?

V) Making the Connection to the Haftarah Reading

I have listed a number of passages from the Haftarah reading that have thematic connections to the Torah portion. Your job is to
find the thematic connections in the Torah portion. Although I may quote an entire verse or two from the Haftarah reading, you
should focus most of your attention on the text that is bold and italicized. The bold and italicized text will contain the main theme
or words that I want you to connect to the Torah portion. Once you have found a connection to the Haftarah verses, record the
chapter and verse of the Torah text connection and write a brief sentence describing how the two passages are thematically
connected.

1. How is Isaiah 61:5 (Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, And the sons of the foreigner) thematically
connected to the Torah portion?

VI) Making the Connection to the Apostolic Writings

I have listed a number of passages from the Apostolic reading that have thematic connections to the Torah portion. Your job is to
find the thematic connections to the Torah portion. Although I may quote an entire verse or two from the Apostolic reading, you
should focus most of your attention on the text that is bold and italicized. The bold and italicized text will contain the main theme
or words that I want you to connect to the Torah portion. Once you have found a connection to the Apostolic verses, record the
chapter and verse of the Torah text connection and write a brief sentence describing how the two passages are thematically
connected.

1. How is Philippians 2:6-7 (who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but
made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.)
thematically connected to the Torah portion?

VIII) Practical Application
Let's get practical. The study of the Word is not complete until we are encouraged to think, speak and act differently. Our study
of the Word should always involve personal application of the text to our lives. As I've heard it said before, Adonai's Word needs
to go from our head to our hearts and then to our hands. Our lifelong journey is to become like our master, Yeshua, and this is
only accomplished as we faithfully apply His Word to every aspect of our lives.

Torah Portion Discussion Questions Answers

1. The most oft repeated phrase is father-in-law.
2. Father-Son! Keep that bit of information in mind when we get to the Messiah in the Parsha section.
3. According to Genesis 41:45 (And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a
wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.)
Joseph’s father-in-law was a priest also. You will remember from our study in Genesis that Joseph is a
prophetic picture of Moses, the deliverer who will come and save Israel just as Joseph delivered his family.
The prophetic significance of this connection is that it is one of many connections connecting Joseph to
Moses and proving that Joseph’s life was a prophetic foreshadowing of Moses’.
4. They both had two sons, more connections connecting Joseph as a forerunner of Moses.
5. Moses does a few things repeatedly. He takes messages between Adonai and Israel. He speaks to Adonai
and Speaks to the people. More interestingly to me, Moses walks up and down the mountain many times!
6. I counted six trips up and down the mountain!
7. Moses is fulfilling the role of a mediator/priest.
8. Exodus 19:8-9 – So Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD. And the LORD said to Moses,
"Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe
you forever." So Moses told the words of the people to the LORD. When Adonai spoke, He was only
speaking TO Moses, not the people! The people heard Adonai speaking (ostensibly to them) only because
He was speaking to Moses!
9. Answers:
A. Only Moses can talk to Adonai
B. In verses 10-13 the people must prepare to draw near to Adonai
C. They must sanctify themselves and wash their clothes before they draw near to Adonai
D. Boundaries are set up around the mountain to prevent them from drawing near to Adonai
E. People are threatened with the death penalty if they try to ascend the mountain
F. People must wait for the shofar signal before drawing near to Adonai
G. They must consecrate themselves before meeting with Adonai
H. There are physical boundaries imposed upon the people to prevent them from coming too close to
Adonai
10. Exodus 3:1-5 – Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led
the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the Angel of
the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was
burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see
this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” 4 So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God

called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then He said,
“Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy
ground.”
11. Adonai said the reason why Moses couldn’t approach closer was because he was on holy ground.
12. Exodus 6:2-3 – And God spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac,
and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them.
13. Answers:
A. Exodus 3:2 – And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a
bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
Exodus 19:18 – Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it
in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.
B. Exodus 19:20 – Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the
Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. Exodus 3:4 – So when the Lord
saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses,
Moses!”
C. Exodus 3:5a – Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Exodus 19:12 – You shall set bounds for

Messiah in the Parsha Answers

1. Isaiah 6:1-7:6 and 9:5-6. We know for a fact that Isaiah 9:5-6 is messianic. Therefore, whoever chose
Isaiah 9:5-6 as the Haftarah reading obviously interpreted the relationship between Moses and Yitro as
messianic in scope.
2. Answer:
A. The Isaiah passage contains the words father and son, as does the Torah portion.
B. And the government will be upon His shoulder – Yitro recognized that Moses had placed the
governance of Israel, “upon his own shoulders” and suggested that he share that governance with
others.
C. Counselor – Yitro functioned as Moses’ counselor.
D. Of the increase of His government – Moses’ government increased as he was able to deputize many
other judges to help rule the people.
E. To order it and establish it with judgment and justice – Moses established judges who, “able men,
such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness”.
3. Your own explanation belongs here
4. All three passages are thematically connected through the idea that if people see Adonai they will die.
According to Exodus 19:10-11 (Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today
and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third
day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.) and Exodus 19:21 (And
the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the Lord, and
many of them perish.) in three days the people will see Adonai. The Scripture makes it clear that anyone
who sees Adonai will die. Therefore, in three days Israel saw Adonai and yet their lives were spared. They
escaped death! This is the Sign of the Messiah and proof that our passage is Messianic.
5. He is mediating the covenant of Torah between Adonai and Israel. Yeshua is the mediator of the New
Covenant between mankind and Adonai.
6. This passage teaches us that Yeshua is the mediator and the only one who can mediate between Adonai and
mankind. In the Torah portion Moses foreshadowed this role as the only one through whom Adonai would
communicate with the people. Hebrews 9:15 (And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant,
by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are
called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.) also teaches us that Yeshua mediates the New
Covenant just as Moses mediated the Old Covenant.

7. Just as Moses’ role as a mediator required him to ascend and descend the mountain, so likewise, Yeshua
will have to descend and ascend from heaven. John 3:13 – No one has ascended to heaven but He who
came down [descended] from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. John 6:62 – What then if
you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? John 20:17 – Jesus said to her, “Do not cling
to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending
to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”
8. Yeshua descended to bring us salvation. Then He ascended after His resurrection. He will descend again at
His second advent.

A. Who has ascended to heaven and descended – Moses ascended and descended the mountain to teach
us about the work of the Messiah. Yeshua is in the process of fulfilling the prophetic shadow by
descending and ascending to heaven.
B. Who has established all the ends of the earth – According to Hebrews 1:2 (has in these last days
spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the
worlds) it is Yeshua who established the earth.
C. What is his name, and the name of his son – The Torah portion emphasizes the relationship between
a father and son! And Yeshua is the son of our heavenly Father.
10. Psalm 68:18 – You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among
men, Even from the rebellious, That the Lord God might dwell there.
11. Psalm 68:19-20 – Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah
Our God is the God of salvation; And to God the Lord belong escapes from death. “Escapes from death” is
a very abbreviated form of our classic definition of the Sign of the Messiah! Therefore, we know that Psalm
68 is messianic.
12. Ephesians 4:7-10 – But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” (Now
this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
Paul quotes Psalm 68:18 proving that it was a messianic passage.
