Fernando captures 50-m men’s freestyle

Bearing a speed of 1.09 minutes, Peter Fernando of Iloilo National High School broke his heat
record and clocked a new trace during the Punta Villa 50 meter freestyle men Invitational
Competition.

Fernando edged his opponents and took the most coveted crown in front of almost 100 campus
journalists and spectators at Punta Villa Hotel and Resort, yesterday.

With his speed of 1.09 seconds, Fernando now holds the fastest swimming record in 50-meter
men freestyle.

“I think my hard work paid off”, said Fernando.

Fernando exhibited a stunning feat making his four opponents eat his waves as he left them all on
the lane.

“He’s so fast. He swims like a merman”, said Ben Maloco of West Visayas State University.

Maloco initially lead the race with Jose Joya of Western Institute of Technology following but their
speed was easily subdued by Fernando in the later part of the competition.

With an astonishing speed of 1.09 minutes, Peter Fernando took the win, leaving Ben Maloco as
second placer, 1.36, and the third placer was Jose Joya, 2.02 minutes.

“I think my long training days and perseverance paid off,” Fernando said during the interview.

“His speed is amazing. He could be an Olympic qualifier”, said Mr. Ruel Dalisay, referee.
