Silencer, Muffler and Chimney

 Chimney Height
H (in meters) = 14 Q0.3
where Q = estimated SO2 emissions in kg/hr
percent weight of sulfur 2 𝑙𝑏𝑠 𝑆𝑂2
Q = specific fuel consumption x fuel density x 100
x 1 𝑙𝑏 𝑆
0.5 2 𝑙𝑏𝑠 𝑆𝑂2
= 5, 883.4929 L/hr x 0.885 kg/L x 100 x 1 𝑙𝑏 𝑆
= 52.0689 kg/hr
H = 14 (52.0689)0.3 = 45.82 m

 Chimney Diameter
4𝑄
D = √𝜋𝑉
where Q = quantity of the gas in m3/s
1 ℎ𝑟
= [ mass of fuel x (1 + A/F ratio) ] / density of gas x 3600 𝑠
1 ℎ𝑟
= ( 5030.386 x 26 ) / 3.25 kg/m3 x 3600 𝑠
= 11.179 m3/s
V = velocity of flue gas at exit point of chimney; optimum range is 15 to 20 m/s
4(11.179)
D=√ = 0.9150 m
𝜋(17)
 AIR INTAKE SYSTEM

Air flow calculation:

𝑠𝑤𝑒𝑝𝑡 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑥 𝑉𝐸
Air flow in m3/min =
𝐶𝐹
Where, VE = volumetric efficiency; use 1.9 for turbo charged diesel engine
CF = cycle factor, use for a 2- stroke engine
𝜋 2
𝐵 𝑆𝑥 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑥 𝑉𝐸
3 4
Air flow in m /min = 𝐶𝐹
𝜋
(0.32)2 (0.40) 𝑥 720 𝑥 1.9

= 1
= 43 m3/min (or 1,517.36 cfm)

 AIR PRE-CLEANER AND FILTER

From Racor’s AFCS Series of Heavy-duty combination of air filter and cleaner,

Use AFCS431 with the following specifications:

Maximum Flow rate = 1517 cfm (43.0 cmm)
Maximum Horsepower = 450
Replacement Elements
(Primary)/(Safety) = AR6324 / AS6323
Length = 37.3 in. (94.7 cm)
Diameter = 18.4 in. (46.7 cm)
Weight = 65.2 lb (29.6 kg)
Inlet Diameter = 6.0 in. (15.2 cm)
EXHAUST SYSTEM

 EXHAUST MANIFOLD

Dry manifolds are the preferred manifold design. They are cost effective and by
providing the maximum possible exhaust energy to the turbocharger, they offer the
highest overall efficiency. Dry manifolds, however, also radiate the most heat and reach
the highest surface temperatures

 SILENCER AND MUFFLER

Data Required:
Engine exhaust flow (CFM) = 23,668.77 CFM (or 11.179 m3/s)
Exhaust Temperature = 1022 to 1742 ˚F
Maximum allowable backpressure = approx. 8 in of H2O (200 mmH2O)

Using the formula:

Therefore V = 10, 304.57 FPM

The flow area required is as follows:

So, Flow area required = 23,668.77/ 10,304.57 = 2.3 ft2

Using Table 2, initial silencer size is taken as 22

After choosing the silencer size, the actual backpressure can be calculated as follows:

Therefore, V actual = 9,103.37 FPM and

Backpressure actual = 6.27 in of H2O
Select GE1 Series (GE1-22)

Specifications:

Pipe size = 22
E = 48
X = 115
Y = 105
Z=5
Weight = 1,500 lbs
