theories of instructional practices associated with providing effective, actionable feedback to first-year
composition students using theory and best practices from rhetoric and composition and writing tutoring.

Computer Requirements
This is a fully online course; therefore, it requires a computer with internet access and the following
technologies:
Note: A smartphone, iPad, Chromebook, etc. will not be sufficient for completing your work in ASU Online
courses. While you will be able to access course content with mobile devices, you must use a computer for
all assignments, quizzes, and virtual labs.
Student Success
To be successful:
Consider all writing for this class to be “public.” Part of becoming an effective writer is learning to appreciate
the ideas and criticisms of others. In this course, our purpose is to come together as a learning community.
Remember that students will often be expected to share writing with others. Avoid writing about topics that
you may not be prepared to subject to public scrutiny or that you feel so strongly about that you are unwilling
to listen to perspectives other than your own.
Expectations
This internship complements your peer tutoring work hours each week. Divide your time wisely between
assisting your lead teacher and reading/writing for the actual internship class. Since much of your
responsibilities will be individual, you must be responsive weekly with emails that involve the faculty
supervisor and the practicum director.
Writing Mentors will work closely with the faculty supervisor of the assigned course to provide feedback on
drafts throughout the writing process, respond to discussion board postings, and encourage first-year
composition students throughout the course. Mentors may be assigned specific tasks (e.g., tracking student
progress or contacting inactive students) at the faculty supervisor’s discretion.
In addition to the hands-on instructional assistance, all interns will engage in coursework that provides a
theoretical framework for application in their role as a Writing Mentor. All responsibilities and due dates will
be posted in the Canvas course; additionally, the following list gives you an idea of what you will be
responsible for in the course portion of the internship:
Grading (1000 points possible)
The following are the assignments you will be working on throughout the semester.
All mentors will create a digital literacy narrative that highlights how you became the readers, writers, and
composers you are today, especially focusing on this development in digital spaces. This means you will
craft a story by selecting memories about how you learned to read, write, and compose in a variety of
contexts, audiences, and purposes. In particular, you will focus on how you have integrated digital literacy
practices into your academic and social life. You will choose a multi-modal genre as the vehicle for sharing
the narrative.
All mentors will develop a course portfolio that showcases how you have met the learning outcomes and
strengthened your skills as a critical reader, writer and thinker. In this portfolio, you will articulate both a
theory of teaching and a theory of writing. You will include and discuss significant samples of both your
written work and your teaching and feedback practices that support the learning outcomes in this course.
You should include a minimum of five samples of feedback you provided for students as evidence to support
your claims about your teaching and learning.
You are required to post to the discussion board twice a week; the first post should be a response to the
reading that is typically guided by questions, and the second post is a response to a peer’s post. Use the
discussion board to critique the readings, ask questions you may have about them, discuss the applicability
to the work you’re currently doing or the dynamics you’re currently facing in the internships, etc. You can use
the Community Forum to post questions you may have or concerns you want to discuss with other new
writing mentors.
Interns will write several journal posts in our course journal. These posts are intended to help you as you
craft your literacy narrative.
Peer review is an important part of growing as a writer. You will share rough drafts of your digital literacy
narrative and teaching portfolio, and give meaningful and actionable feedback to your classmates.

All assignments, unless otherwise announced, MUST be submitted to the designated area of Canvas. Do
