RESEARCH DESIGN

This study aims to describe the relationship between gadget dependency among

students and their academic performances. The study will be using a correlational

research design to attain the desired result. Correlational research design is a type of

research design where a researcher seeks to understand what kind of relationships

naturally occurring variables have with one another. This type of study determines

whether or not two variables are correlated.

This means to study whether an increase or decrease in one variable corresponds

to an increase or decrease in the other variable (Siddharth Kalla , n.d.). In this design the

researchers will be able to measure and assess the statistical relationship between the

two variables.

The researchers shall give a survey to the respondents which will serve as a

classification of the respondents to their level of gadget dependency namely; high,

moderate and low gadget dependency. After the respondents answer the survey, the

researchers will then relate the data to their academic performance which is based upon

the respondents’ GPA for their first semester.

The first part of the survey will classify the students to their level of gadget

dependency, the second part shall ask of their GPA in the first semester. After this the

researchers will then correlate the respondents’ level of gadget dependency to their

GPAs. The result of this study can result in two ways; positive correlation and negative

correlation. With a positive correlation, the respondent who scored above or below the

average (mean) on one measure also scored similarly, either above or below the average
(mean) on the other. However, with the negative correlation, the respondent scored above

on one tends to score below the other ones and vice versa.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The research study will be conducted at Andres Bonifacio College, College Park,

Miputak, Dipolog City.

SAMPLING AND SAMPLING METHOD

The respondents of this study shall be the grade 11 STEM students of Andres

Bonifacio College. According to the data given by the Grade 11 STEM advisers the STEM

strand is divided into four sections which are STEM A, STEM A-1, STEM B, and STEM C

respectively. Furthermore, there are 198 students that are part of the STEM strand of

Andres Bonifacio College. In order to compute for the sample size Sloven’s Formula shall

be used.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
In this study the researchers shall use the stratified random sampling method to

compute for how many respondents shall be taken from each strata or section. Stratified

random sampling is a type of sampling that divides the population into strata to produce

more accurate results, as well as equally dividing the population (Bhat, 2019).

In order to stratify and equally choose participants from the four sections of STEM

11 the following formula and number of participants shall be used.

𝑛2 = × 𝑛 ; where

n2=sample size of students per section

INSTRUMENTS USED

The researchers shall use survey questionnaires to obtain the data for the study.

Survey questionnaires shall provide the researchaers with more reliable data, as well as

making it easier for the respondents to answer the questionnaire

Section - A of the questionnaire is adapted from a study conducted by

Muduli (2014) in which he used to assess the respondents of their gadget dependency

level. Some questions will ask about the dependency of respondents on the technological

gadgets and services. Out of 10 questions, question number 5, 8 and 10 will be negative

statements and therefore will be reverse coded for calculation. All questions were in 5-

point Likert-scale, where 5 refer to strongly agree and 1 refers to strongly disagree. The

score in this 5-points scale varied from 10 to 50. The score from 34 to 50 is regarded as

high, from 17 to 33 as moderate and from 10-16 as low dependency.

In Section-B of the questionnaire the respondents will be asked of their GPA during

their first semester. The grades shall be sorted according to the range in the grading scale

which is; 90-100, 85-89, 80-84, 75-79, and below 75.

The result of the Section A shall determine the level of gadget dependency while

Section-B shall find out the respondents’ GPA in a range basis. The results of both
sections shall then be interpreted through finding out the relationship between levels of

gadget dependency and academic performance.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers have decided already the research design and it is imperative to follow

the systematic procedure below:

1. LETTERS OF CONSENT

Since the researchers will conduct a survey that involves confidential data

the researchers will send letters of consent to the senior high school principal as

well as to the class adviser of the chosen respondents. This will validate the data

collected since it is authorized by a higher personnel in the chosen department.

2. DETERMINING THE SAMPLE SIZE

Based on the data provided by the advisers of the STEM 11 classes there

are a total of 198 students that are part of the STEM 11. from that data the

researchers will then determine the sample size of the total Grade 11 stem

population. The researchers shall use the Slovin’s Formula in order to get the

sufficient sample size for the study. The researchers will then use stratified

random sampling to compute for how many respondents shall be coming from

each section. After that the researchers shall draw lots to determine who would

be part of the research survey and also to suffice to the number of respondents

that the stratified random sampling method yields.

3. DISTRIBUTION OF QUESTIONNAIRES
The survey questionnaire will be then given to the researchers will use a

structured scaling questionnaires in gathering the data. Wherein they give an

option to the respondents to rank their answers to the question on the scale of

given range values.

4. GATHERING THE DATA AND QUESTIONNAIRES

Right after answering the researchers will then collect the questionnaires from

the respondents and the data will be then interpreted and analyzed.

DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURES

After gathering the data for the research it will then be subjected to data analysis

to convert it into information that will answer the research questions.

In order to answer the first research question which is “What is the level of student’s

dependency towards gadgets?” the researchers are going to use the Likert scale in

identifying the levels of dependency. It will be used to indicate and interpret the answers

they have given in the first part of the survey. The points here vary from 10 – 50, the score

from 34 to 50 is regarded as high, from 17 to 33 as moderate and from 10-16 as low

dependency.

Secondly, in order to sort out the GPAs of the respondents the grades will be sorted

out based on their range and corresponding remarks. This also used in order to answer

the second research question which is “What is the final grade of student during the first

semester?”.
