Quilt of Belonging Mini Project

“A Place for All”

In the spirit of creating a sense of belonging in our classroom and deepening our
understanding of First Nations people in Canada, we will be creating our own Quilt of
Belonging. Each block of the quilt will represent one of the many First Nations groups in
Canada. Once the individual pieces have been created, they will be ‘woven’ together to
create a large piece of art.

In pairs you will be researching and creating a block for your assigned First Nations
group.

Your block must include the following: (Check the box when completed)
❏ The name of the First Nations group
❏ At least five unique symbols, illustrations, and patterns to represent the First
Nations group.
❏ Use colour to add detail and definition to your block.

Once you have completed your block, you must prepare a 1 minute presentation
explaining the components of your block and how it represents your assigned First
Nations group. Specifically explain the illustrations, symbols, patterns, and colours.

Steps:
1. Login to D2L. Go to the ‘Quilt of Belonging’ folder. Find the link for your First
Nations group. Use the information to write notes about the culture.
2. Do additional research to gather more information about the group. Write down
any important information.
3. Using the rough copy on the back of this page, decide how you will represent the
group using patterns, colours, symbols, and illustrations.
4. Show me your rough copy and I will give you the materials for the good copy.
5. Complete the good copy of your block.
6. Prepare your presentation.
