FROM THE EDITOR
What FHMers
If you have gout, what can you NOT partake of have been up
the Holiday feast? to this month
I asked a doctor-friend and his sense of humor is sick. “Definitely no beer or red wine,
because of the alcohol. Especially beer. No ham because of high salt content. The
redder the meat the more uric acid there is, so it’s wise to stay off beef. Chicken is
okay, but if you’re dipping it in gravy, no. You say your family has menudo as a matter
of tradition? If it has liver in it you can’t have it. Anything with high fructose or sugar
content is out—so no cakes, no leche flan. No fruit salad because of the sweetened
cream. Soft drinks are out.”
“So what else is left?!,” I protested.
“Water na lang in the end,” said my doctor-friend, who is no friend at all.
Lucky for me I don’t have gout—yet. I would never want it for myself, but looking
at the checklist my doctor-friend gave me of food I should avoid, I might as well have
signed up years ago. Everything I love to eat (except liver) is on it: go easy on beef and
pork, fruit juices, salt and sugar, gravy and sauces. Avoid alcohol, laman-loob, liver,
shellfish like shrimps and crabs, dilis, bagoong, food with high fructose corn syrup
found in sweet food.
Why am I being such a killjoy? Because that is exactly what gout is—the ultimate Chise showcases some
killjoy—and we know you’re getting ready to eat your way through all the parties interesting acting talents

for a long time, if not for life. We hope this feature gets you to shape up next year.
But you say you’re healthy and young, gout is still out. That’s what some of my
now gout-ridden friends thought so, too. One is a triathlete who still drinks beer to his
heart’s content; the other, one of my best friends since grade school who was once a
beast on the b-ball court, but who recently had to take two weeks off work because he
couldn’t walk. Granted, they’re already in their 40s, but they were once in their 20s like
many of you.
Having said all these, enjoy your noche buena and media noche!

O
h, sorry for not telling you right off:
Debbie was also part of Pantaxa 2.
For those who missed that
amazing moment in time when the
Viva Hot Babes ruled the universe,
Pantaxa was a sort of throwback to that
time, and also a hunt for future Hot Babes.
Right now, boys are too polite for a bombshell
comeback (but if history is on our side, it will
only be a matter of time).
“Yeah, I was part of Pantaxa 2. And yes,
that was the first plan talaga ng management
for me—to be a sexy actress. Although, I’m
open to try different roles, I don’t want naman
na ma-typecast sa ganun lagi. I want to learn
more in this industry. Recently, I discovered
na kaya ko pala mag-comedy because of our
series The Kasambahays and I’m looking
forward to do more of it,” Debbie says.
You can clearly see that Debbie is still far
from being jaded. She also knows what it
takes to stay long.
“Working in show business is both
thrilling and nakaka-pressure at the same
time. This job takes effort, hard work and
a special kind of focus. You need discipline
for the long hours in taping. I really enjoy
everything though! I get to portray different
characters. You can be someone you’re not in
front of the camera! It’s challenging but fun! I
definitely love my job, I guess,” Debbie says.
She remembers a time when she went head
to head with an icon.
“There was a time I had a scene with the
Maricel Soriano. It was a humbling experience
for a starter like me to be able to work with
the Diamond Star. It was truly an honor. I
wasn't asked to cry, but because I was with Ms.

verybody deserves a second chance.
Right. We say that as though
we have an endless supply of it.
But what if this is the case: Not
everybody deserves a second chance.
Second chances are reserved for those
who’ve actually dismally failed. They’re for
those who’ve seen luck truly run out on them.
They’re for the genuinely down and out. You
can’t just say you deserve a second chance—
if you keep telling yourself that, with every
little failure you go through, then maybe you
just feel entitled.
Looking at it this way, Angel Yap—
Pastillas Girl for a while—truly deserves it.
When her Youtube video went viral two
years ago, it was not exactly met with general
adulation. When she went on national TV
and was pitted against another new viral
sensation at the time, she endured the wrath
of countless foulmouthed bashers. And then
the sky completely fell on her when her
mother died tragically. You’d have thought
she was better off disappearing. But she On hindsight, we know that there was no

W
e don’t know how celebrities survive
it, all the trolling and bashing. A
real person of no big consequence
with maybe less than a hundred
followers on IG or Twitter would
have been tickled pink to be receiving any
kind of attention no matter how vile. But to be
receiving thousands of toxic comments every
day is sickening. And to think Angel as Pastillas
Girl then wasn’t even a real celebrity yet.
“You have no idea how hard it was for
me to face that kind of hatred every day. Of
course may mga tao na nagtatanggol sa akin
and nagmamahal and may mga tao naman
na kahit wala naman akong ginagawang
bad sa kanila, they hate me so much, as in
nakakaloka talaga,” Angel says. “At first
sobrang hirap talaga. There were times na
you’ll doubt yourself, too. May mga times na
naiiyak na lang ako kasi too much na. But
then I realized na whatever you do, good or
bad, meron pa rin talaga silang masasabi at
masasabi as if they know who you really are.
“So dumating ako sa point na I really
don’t care kung ano ‘ng iisipin nila. I’ll just
do my own thing whatever makes me happy
as long as wala akong tinatapakan na ibang
tao. I believe in what they say “judging a
person does not define who they are, it defines
who you are.” Kaya to those who believe in
me, to those who doubt me, they became an
inspiration for me to do more. I’m not proving
myself for them. I’m proving myself to myself
because I know what I deserve,” Angel adds.
After her life as Pastillas Girl on It’s
Showtime, Viva Entertainment took her in
as a new talent. Although things have yet to
blossom for Angel, she is not idle. Currently
she is co-hosting a game show called Dobol or
Samting on cable channel Viva TV.
“One thing I understand about showbiz,
nothing lasts forever. There’s no guarantee
and it’s up to you how you sustain it and
that’s the hardest part. I’m very thankful to
ABS-CBN and to my It’s Showtime family for
opening a door for me. After the Pastillas
Segment, yun na lang naman na talaga yun
kasi the thing is, hahanapan lang naman
talaga nila ako ng Mr. Pastillas and then after
they found me one, yun na yun. And then
my mom died. Ang bilis ng transition ng
mga pangyayari. It was tragic. I was really
shattered and I needed time to move on. I gave
myself time to grieve, I thought I also needed
to distract myself and to work to sustain
myself and that’s where Viva came in, they
became my second family after It’s Showtime.”
Angel is working to stay in the business
for long. “I’m doing acting workshops already
and I also had some minor roles where I
played the best friend of the bida. I really
want to pursue a sexy-comedian kind of role,
I think it fits me well. Or maybe the mataray/
kontrabida type. I’d be happy to accept roles
like that para walang effort masyado, ha
ha! I’m gonna slay it. But I’m also looking
forward to other roles that can challenge my
boundaries in acting.”

THe MAzDA CX-3 iS A CROSSOveR fOR PeOPle WHO DOn’T SeCOnD-GueSS

WORDS ALLAN P. HERNANDEZ; PHOTOGRAPHY MARK JESALVA

90 FH M SEPTEMBER 2016 facebook.com/FHM.ph • twitter.com/fhmphil • fhmphilofficial www.fhm.com.ph

MAZ DA CX-3 Crossovers are a bit of a conundrum: they were created
as a new class of car to sort of bridge the gap between
those who want the utility and function of an SUV, but

never really do get the best of both worlds when you
F E E l S l I kE buy a crossover, there is always a tradeoff somewhere.
That long Ground clearance is high, but boot space is a bit too
weekend might small. You get the feeling of sitting above the car but you
as well be actually want it a bit low. In the end the problem may not
spring break even be the car but your indecision.
And so we arrive at a funny irony you may come to
realize when you’re out in the market to buy a crossover:
l O O kS l I kE
Maybe the car is trying to be two things when it isn’t,
The abs you
chiseled out
but you have to be of one thing when you decide to
for spring break get it—you have to be real sure you want it. It’s not
an either-or proposition. You have to want a crossover
for what it is or else just go straight to regular car or
B UY AT
outright SUV.
P1.28 M-1.48M
That is exactly the feeling we got when we took the
wheels of the Mazda CX-3. It’s on the small side of the
crossover style and the first thing you may have problems
with is boot space. Here’s what happened: we first tried
to fit a bike in by folding the rear seats down (they split
60:40). We slid it in, but with not much room to spare.
Then we tried to fit two guitars—one regular, and the
longer bass guitar (our tester both biked and played music,
a shameless insufferable hipster)—without folding the
seats down. The bass guitar didn’t fit, even standing up.
Inside, the CX-3 is Mazda premium through and
through, but is also on the compact side you realize
it’s for a single person, or a couple with no kids yet, or

on birth control. It may be for two

friends but that’s about it.
But what the CX-3 takes away
in space it puts right back in, and
multiplies it several fold, in drive
dynamics. The CX-3 is hands down the
most enjoyable drive we’ve had so far. It
feels as though if you pointed it somewhere
you want to go, it would zoom to it immediately. It gives
you the confidence to make those twisty turns if you
were, say, out to surf in Baler. The CX-3 is definitely a
car for play.
M OTOR So in the end, choosing a CX-3 is a lifestyle choice.
eDiTeD BY And it is just one choice, not an either-or choice. You
AllAN P. HERNANDEZ will want it because you have no patience for second-
