ALLEN STREAKS THROUGH THE TIMED MILE ON HIS RECORD SHATTERING RUN Johnny Allen And Triumph Thunderbird Break World's Motorcycle Speed Record by Pete Colman 1 EXACTLY 8:31 AIM, on the morning of September 6th, Johnny Allen roared across the famous Bonnerille Salt Flas fon the fist leg of a speed run that is aow motorcycle history. Observers manning telephones every mile along the eight mile course reported his progress to the officials and timers as he rolled down the straightaway of salt ‘The telephone messages were coming fast. . . end of one mile... end of two miles... now in the measured mile hie has completed the mile. The first I:g of the run was Completed and Allen started his three miles of deceleration hoping to stop his streamlined Triumph at che prover slace, where his “catch crew” wis wating ‘The Streamliner wat immediately checked by Jack Wilsoo, chief tuner and Stormy Mangham, designer of the streamlined shell and eurned to face the south ia preparation for the reeurn trip. At 8:44 AM. Aller had completed his second run riding 1 movorcyle faster than anyone ia the world! ‘Allen's average speed of 214.40 mph is a new absolu world’s speed record for motorcycles, beating the previous rec- ford of 211 mph formerly held by Wilhelm Herz of Neckarsulm, Germany. In addition t0 the worlds absolute motorcycle speed record, Allen has beaten six worlds speed records for various classes and distances plus two American speed records. ‘When seting records in the $00cc. (3050 cu. in.) class, Allen's Strexmliner vas couipped with a Teivmoh Tiger 100 engine, When setting records in the 650, 730ce, and 1000ce clases, his Streamliner wis powered with 4 Trivmph Thunder. bird engine Bosh of thee engin were standard production ‘models and not hand-built factory specials as one might imagine. Tes interesting to ote that neither of Allen's Triumph engines were equipped with superchargers, yet the world records which he broke were previously established with supercharged engines. The rules of the American Motorcycle Association do not permit “ the use of superchargers although the rules of the FIM do per: miesupecchargers for world record attemp. Jack Wilson, Service Manager for Pete Dali's Triumph Sales in Fort Worth, Texas, stated that all pars used in the engines weve factory extaloged items available over the counter to any fone. He had equipped the Tiger 100 engine with the very laest ‘Triumph "splayed port’ cylinder head and apparently this new hhead was of considenible help The 30.50 cu. in. Triumph powered Streamliaer turned the amazing average speed of 198020 mph ‘Triumph Strvamliner Thunderbird making last-minute prepa AMERICAN MororeveLINe The speed records were offically sinctioned and supervised by the American Motorcycle Association and by the FIM. Ofciating for the AMA was Bus Schaller, referse forall Bonneville events. A.C. Pillsbury, former regional director of the AAA, was casing for the FIM as he was recently appointed to this acw capacity by the intermtional headquarters in France The record runs were offically timed by the United States ‘Auto Club and the clocks were approved by both the AMA and FIM after their accuracy had been checked and certified to by ‘the California Institute of Technology. ‘The team of Allen, Wilson ard Mangham all hal from Totas Johnny Alles, 27 year old owner of a Fort Worth plating com pany, has ridden motorcycles for the past 12 years. Eight of these years in active class °C” competition. Allen was formerly the Texas Suite champion and has made a great name for himself jn many types of motorcycle events. Jack Wilson also hails ftom Fort Worth, Texas and for the past two years has tuned all of the engines used in the Triumph Sereamlines. Although Wilson has staied the engines were equipped with factory cataloged parts. he undoubtedly has a few tuning secrets which he is not likely to divulge . . . not ‘even 10 Johnny Allen Stormy Mangham is the ownet of a small air port in Smithfield, ‘Texas in addition to being one of the oldest and most experienced pilots for American Aislin. It was Mangham who first conceived the dream of breaking the world’s cords with a Triumph mororcyele. His dream, now cone true wis accomplished without the aid of wind tennels or special testing equipment . . yet from all appearances Mang- hams steeamlined shell is serodjnamically pertect. Mangham stared with a standard Triumph frame, engine, and sear box and wheels. Around this bisie Triumph motoreycle he buile an aircraft wpe frame work of chrame moly tubing. The frame work was then covered with a removable ferglas shell tnd has an overall lengch of something over 12 ft ‘A careful study had been mide of the equipment ceded to bain record speeds and, therefore, this cew of Texans selevted Dunlop tires for theit Streamlines. Drive chains of high tensil strength were required, s0 they chose the world famous Renold MIIO. Fitted co the engines were Lodge sacing spack plugs, Amal arburctors, and Luas magnesos. Mobiloil and Mobilfuel ‘were supplied by the General Petroleum Corporation. Johnson Motors, In, Western States distritutor for Triumph and Aviel motorcycles, were co-tponiore af the events and were aided by the Triumph Engineering Company of England, the General Petroleum Corporation, Lodge, Amal, Renols Smithy Luaas, Dunlop, and various Triumph dealers in the Wesera United States ‘The Triumph 30.50 engine used in Class A Streamline.
