Science – 4th grade

Lesson Plan
Teacher: Ms. Nobles
Date: 05/11/2018

Overview & Purpose

Teach the students how electricity works with the help of static and current electricity.
Students will perform an experiment seeing if charging a comb with a wool sock causes
an electric reaction.

Education Standards
1. Electricity and magnetism are related effects that have many useful applications in

everyday life. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know h
ow to design and build simple series and parallel circuits by
using components such as wires, batteries, and bulbs.
b. Students know how to build a simple compass and use it to detect magnetic
effects, including Earth’s magnetic field.
c. Students know electric currents produce magnetic fields and know how to
build a simple electromagnet.

d. Students know t he role of electromagnets in the construction of electric
motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and
earphones.

e. Students know e
lectrically charged objects attract or repel each other.

f. Students know that magnets have two poles (north and south) and that like poles

repel each other while unlike poles attract each other.

g. Students know e
lectrical energy can be converted to heat, light, and motion.

Objectives
1. Have the students understand the types of electricity

2. Have them perform the experiment

3. Answer the questions that follow.

Materials Needed

1. Hard plastic comb

2. Liquid soap

3. Thread

4. O shaped cereal

5. Table

6. Tape

7. Papers about electricity

Verification
Steps to check for student understanding

1. Ask them if they have ever gotten shocked or shocked someone while wearing
socks on the carpet.

2. Have a student explain to me what electricity is.

3. Curabitur tincidunt elementum ante

Activity
Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson
I will start out by asking if they have ever been shocked, explain to them that is static
electricity. Explain to them the differences between static and current electricity.
