CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
1. Upon submission of the laboratory report, each student is assumed to have read and
understood the contents of these guidelines.
2. The purpose of this guidelines is to provide a template and general instruction in the
submission of laboratory reports for Chemical Engineering Laboratory (ChE 512L).
3. The students are expected to submit a soft and printed copy of the compiled reports
by group on or before December 7, 2019 at 12:00 noon. Failure to submit on the
prescribed deadline will result to decreased rating applied for student performance
grading criteria d-iii (Timeliness) identified in the previous guidelines for this course.
4. A laboratory report template is provided as an attachment to this guideline. Students
are advised not to alter the formatting of the said template.
5. The prescribed paper size specification is LETTER (8.5” x 11”). The prescribed
orientation is portrait having margins as follows: Top: 1”, Right: 1”, Bottom: 1” and
Left: 1.25”. For data presentation that requires landscape orientation, the prescribed
margins are as follows: Top: 1.25”, Right: 1”, Bottom: 1” and Left” 1”. NO visible page
borders should appear on all pages of this report.
6. The prescribed font type for the laboratory report is PALATINO LINOTYPE. All texts
in the cover, headings, texts, tables and captions should be of the prescribed font type.
7. The laboratory report texts must be formatted accordingly as set in this MS Word
document. (Please see Styles Tab in the Ribbon)
8. The standard font size of section texts is 11 pt. Table headings and figure captions
must be 1 pt. smaller than the section texts.
9. Each laboratory report is divided into sections, namely, (1) Introduction, (2)
A space must also be reserved before starting a new section.
10. [Experiment no.] is centered, single-spaced and is found at the very first line of the
first page of each report.
11. [Experiment title] is Bold, centered and ALL CAPS
12. [Section title] is formatted as follows: Bold, Capitalize Each Word, Indented Left
13. [Section text] is justified, 1.15 spacing with one (1) space after each paragraph.
14. [Lists] such as materials and equipment lists must by justified and numbered using (a),
(b), (c) format.
15. [Procedure steps] are justified, numbered using 1., 2., and 3. format.
16. [Tables] are tabulated numerical or verbal data used in the body of the manuscript.
[Figures] are all other non-verbal materials such as illustrations, charts, graphs, maps,
photographs, drawings and diagrams. [Table headings] go ABOVE the table while
[Figure captions] go BELOW the figure. The [captions] must be single-spaced and be
on the same page as the table or figure.
17. A [List of Cited Materials] must also be provided.

EXPERIMENT TITLE 1
Introduction
[Introduction text should conform to this format] The introduction must be composed of one
to two paragraphs. State the purpose of the experiment in general terms. Basic information
on the topic must also be included such as equations representing the behavior of a model
(theory) that can be used in the analysis of measurements in the experiment.
A review of the existing information or theory must also be provided. An earlier work could
also be included with the proper references cited in APA format. A brief summary must also
be included of how the experiment was performed, with statements of the findings and the
conclusions of the investigation.
Objective
The objective must contain a concise statement outlining the purpose of the experiment.

Procedure
3. The procedure must be written in the impersonal (3rd person) past tense.
4. Example of a wrong procedure: [We are taking the temperature every 2 minutes.]
Results
The results must consist of quantitative and qualitative observations of the experiment.
Discussion
The [Discussion] Section must contain interpretation of the data presented in the results
Calculations
Conclusion
The conclusion is a concise statement that answers the objective. The conclusion must be
written in impersonal past tense.
Literature Cited
Any information borrowed from another source which is not common knowledge
must be cited within the text but listed (with full citation). It should be on a
separate final page of the report.
