To understand this behaviour, you need to understand one more term which is
called as “ Low-End torque”. Low -End Torque is the amount of torque produced
at Low RPM range of an engine ( around 1000–2000 rpm) .This low end torque is
very crucial when moving a vehicle from stand-still or driving in slow-speed
conditions such as in traffic. If the greater amount of torque is generated at the
lower end of engine rpm, it implies that the engine has more ‘low-end-torque’
or better pulling ability at slow speeds.
It also implies that vehicle can move very quickly from rest/stand still.
Now as the engine speed keeps increasing, torque starts to decrease because of

pulling ability of an engine and hence greater the torque..
If you know the Horsepower (HP) of an engine, then you can calculate the torque
using the formula :-
Torque = (HP*5252)/RPM

In simple words, when the engine is started up the torque produced is
dependent on the rpm of the engine when the engine is running at low speeds,
when the speed of the engine increases , the torque also increases till the
maximum torque is produced which is in range 3000–5000rpm. After the
maximum torque is produced, any further increase in engine speed will give out
constant maximum torque.

RPM is nothing but Revolutions Per Minute. In Engine, simply RPM tells you
how many times the shaft have completed its rotation with respective to a fixed
axis in a minute.
So, the more force you apply more torque it is and more RPM finally.
When you pedal more, throttle allows more Air-Fuel mixture to enter the Engine
Cylinder.

filled with less amount of fuel mixture.
So, as the fuel that is taken is in less amount, the force applied to the engine
becomes less. Hence the less torque at higher RPMs.
So, that is why when you drive, it is advisable to drive in top gears as much as
possible and as soon as possible. Because at low gears, fuel consumption is more
than at the higher RPMs.

At 1st gear we need high torque so we have low speed at high torque. As the
necessity of torque reduces we keep increasing gears.

power generators.
In case of Turbines the load carrying is based on the flow rate of steam.
generally the Temperature and pressure of steam/ gas will generally be
constant, against the vanes and blades.
Speed of a motor is the rate at which it spins and is often given in “rpm” or
rotations per minute.
While torque is the amount of twisting force generated by the motor (often
through a shaft).
Higher speed does not necessarily imply high torque. Two motors having same
speed may deliver different torque values.
For a given motor, if you apply twice the voltage you'll double the no-load speed,
double the torque, and the power would become four time. This is assuming that
the motor doesn't burn up.

“distance of the force from the axis of rotation” (that is the position vector)
and
or τ = r Ft
Torque is a vector and is a cross product of the position vector and the force
vector. When the rotation is only in clock-wise or anticlockwise direction, the
sign minus or plus is attached to the value of torque to give it vector identity
The unit of torque is newton meter(N-m) but you must remember that the unit
of work is also N.m but the two are totally different entities.

There is no relation between engine rpm and torque. I can explain this by taking
few bikes as examples.
Take the case of high torque at low rpm. This category deals with heavy weight
vehicles such as RE bullet and trucks. They need high torque at as low as 2500
rpm but their torque value decreases as engine rpm increases since they are not
focused to achieve high speed. Thus they achieve low torque at their max speed
or max rpm.
Again, take the case of low torque at low rpm. The Yamaha R15 and sports bikes

are in this category. They are mainly focused to achieve top speed rather than

Its simple ! Higher the rpm lower will be the torque . At high rpm you get more
power . You may have seen a engine specs that say 94Nm @4600 rpm it means
that at 4600 rpm of the engine the output torque from the engine you get is
94Nm .Above 4600 the engine torque reduces . But note that torque produced is
Engine Torque where you don't couple engine with the gear box .To enhance
the torque for particular applications you design gear train accordingly !
