Merida values independence, freedom, and competency, while Elinor
values duty and modest behavior. Merida wants to follow her own heart, while Elinor fears this could destabilize their family’s position. It also involves the rest of the family and is based on family issues rather than personal ones, predominantly the conflict of Merida’s values and need for independence set against Elinor’s values. By fleeing, Merida only ignores her problem and ultimately makes it worse. When confronted with the consequence of her choice, Merida desperately seeks to remedy it, but has trouble finding the source of the problem.
