Course Description:
Students will gain a fundamental understanding of the functions and purposes of the human
resources department. The module includes discussions on recruiting and selection, various
methods of compensation, and labor relations. Through hands-on training in Microsoft Access,
students will gain knowledge in the development, maintenance, and updating of an electronic
database. Prerequisites: None

80 Clock Hours (Lecture/Lab Hours: 40 hours/40 hours)

Describe contemporary human resource perspectives and trace the evolution of the human
resource function in organizations.
Describe the legal context of human resource management.
Discuss legal issues in compensation, labor relations, and other areas in human resource
management.
Describe the recruiting process, including internal and external recruiting and the importance of
realistic job previews.
Discuss how organizations train and develop new employees to better enable them to perform
effectively.
Discuss the nature of diversity, and distinguish between diversity management and equal
employment opportunity, and affirmative action.
Describe the purposes of performance appraisal in organizations.
Describe the nature of careers in organizations.
Describe the role of labor unions in organizations.
Identify and summarize trends in unionization and discuss the unionization process.
Describe the basic issues involved in the physical work environment.
Discuss stress and stress-management programs in organizations.
Describe the basic model of performance.
Discuss motivation and human needs.
Create and use a database using Microsoft Access.

Instructional Methods:
This course will combine lecture, discussion, applied demonstration, practical applications,
directed self-study, website reference, and reading and writing assignments/class activities.
Grading:
The following grading scale will be used in calculating your final grade:

Outside Hours:
There are three types of outside hour assignments; reading/homework, portfolio development,
and research assignments/projects. You must complete the following Outside Hours activities
throughout the module. These assignments will take approximately 20 hours per unit or 80
hours per module.
Unit 4: Reading/homework
1. Human Resources chapters 12, 13
2. Microsoft Access
3. Review Chapters and study for the Exam
4. Business project (cont’d) -- Create a new hire packet for a sample
business
5. Portfolio development -- Create a list of people who will write letters of
recommendation. Ask them to write the letters. Add to portfolio.
Policies/Procedures:
Students will be expected to attend class daily. Good attendance in school is an important
consideration for employers. Absenteeism, being tardy, or leaving early may prevent a
student from successfully completing the module and/or the program. Violating the
