OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES
General Learning Outcome(s)
General Outcome A

Specific Learning Outcome(s) [*both ELA and a discipline]:

A4-5: select, perform and refine ways to receive, retain and send an object with control

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:

- Be able pass a basketball with control to a designated person or spot

- Be able to receive a bounce or chest pass

MATERIALS
Basketballs, shorts, sneakers

PROCEDURE
Anticipatory Set

Introduction

1) The kids will gather around, while I gather attendance and explain that we will be doing
basketball. (2 minutes)
2) I will get the kids to run 3 laps around the gym and then the class will break into a dynamic
stretch. (1 minute)
3) For the dynamic stretch- high knees, but kicks, shuffles (both ways), crossovers, kicks and
to end floor sweeps. Once the kids are warm and blood is moving, the lesson can begin. (4
minutes)

Transition- the kids are now warm, and the class will make a circle (standing), and I will
begin the lesson.

Body

The first step will to be break down the triple threat position. The position where the player can
either pass, shoot, or dribble. The lesson will be predicated on passing out of the triple threat
position. There will be an emphasis that when I am talking the students will be listening and not
bouncing the balls. This will be the first lesson with me and with basketball, so it is crucial that the
rules be established early. It is easier to let off the grip with the rules than tightening them up.

Stationary

1) Break the class up into partners and having them stand 10 feet apart. Each partner will have
one ball between them ready for instruction.
2) I will model the chest pass for the students and then I will have the students do it. Each
student will pass 10 times each (20 in total) between the partners. I will walk around
helping any groups that are in need of assistance. Once they have completed their passes, I
will ask them to hold the balls and we will move onto the next pass.
3) The next pass is the bounce pass. I will demonstrate the bounce pass for the class and then
I will have them complete. Like the chest pass they will each do 10 passes between them
(20 in total). And I can walk around helping out where needed.

Dynamic

1) The kids will stay in partners and again they will be doing the chest pass. However, this
time they have to run parallel to each other and chest pass while they are moving. Each set
of partners will go down the length and back twice.
2) Again, the students will be doing bounce pass but this time they will be doing it while
running parallel. They will also go down and back twice, while they are passing the ball
back and forth.

Game

This is where the students can use their learning and apply it to the game. The students will be split
into even teams and explained the game. Under 20 they will be split into 2 teams. Over 20 they
will be split into 4 teams.

The game is a combination of basketball, football and handball, (like ultimate frisbee). The
students have to pass the ball between their team members and try to get across the end line.
Students will only be allowed to take 3 steps once they catch the ball and must get rid of it or else
the other team gets possession.

If over 20 the class will still play the same game, but the gym will be broken in half and two
games will be going simultaneously.

Transition into conclusion-

Have the class clean up any equipment that is out and sit in a circle
Conclusion

Once the class is in the circle, they will static stretch while I reinforce what they have learned for
that lesson. Go over the chest pass and bounce pass and how it can be used in basketball.

I will model the static stretch I want them to do: toe touches, butterfly, knee to chest while laying
down, then leg crossover and hold.

Class will be finished and moving on to the next class.
