SOLAR WATER HEATING

is the conversion of sunlight into heat for water heating using a solar thermal collector.

BENEFITS OF USING WATER HEATING SYSTEM

• Help reduce harmful emission from fossil fuels.

• You can enjoy free energy from the sun, which could save your energy cost in heating water.

BASIC COMPONENTS

1. Solar Collectors-mounted on roof to capture solar radiation

2. Storage Tank-holds the solar heated water

3. Interconnecting Pipe Work-carry the heat transfer liquid

ISSUES TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN INSTALLING SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEM

• Solar collectors orientation

• Application of solar water heating systems

• Retrofitting of solar water heating system

• Market availability

• Maintenance and expected life

COMMON TYPE OF SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEM

• Active-uses an electric pump to circulate water or a heat transfer fluid from storage tanks through the collectors.

• Passive-relies on gravity and the tendency for water to naturally circulate as it is heated, allowing water or heat transfer fluid to move
through the system without the use of a circulating pump.

TWO TYPES OF SOLAR COLLECTORS

1. Flat-plate collector are the most common solar thermal technology in Europe.

-20 years warranty small risk of overheating with temperature of 170-180 F(76.67-82.22 CELCIUS )

-They consist of an enclosure containing a dark colored absorber plate with fluid circulation passageways, and a transparent cover to
allow transmission of solar energy into the enclosure.

2. Evacuated Tube Collectors

-10 years warranty and can produce a temperature of 250F(121.11CELCIUS)

-are the most common solar thermal technology in China and in the World.

- they make use of a glass tube to surround the absorber with high vacuum and effectively resist atmospheric pressure. The vacuum
that surrounds the absorber greatly reduces convection and conduction heat loss, therefore achieving greater energy conversion efficiency.

THERMOSYPHON CIRCULATION

-is a method of passive heat exchange, based on natural convection, which circulates a fluid without the necessity of a mechanical
pump.

Useful instrumentation

• Display of temperature

• Temperature sensor

• pump-enabled

• Pump hours run

• Buck-up heating on
