Day 2- Subtraction Story Problems Lesson Plan

Standards
Standards Addressed Through Explicit Instruction
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between addition and subtraction.
Add and subtract within 20.
2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
Standards Supported Through Classroom Routines and/or Math Workshop
Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.
2.OA.4 Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5
columns; write an equation to express the total as the sum of equal addends.
Standards for Mathematical Practice
MP4. Model with mathematics.
MP6. Attend to precision.
Essential Question(s) and Enduring Understanding(s)
What are properties of whole numbers?
Numbers can be classified by their attributes.

How does the base ten number system work?

Place value is based on groups of ten.
What are flexible, effective, and efficient methods of computation?
Flexible methods of computation involve grouping numbers in strategic ways.
What are efficient strategies to represent and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction?
Problems can be solved in many ways.
Objective: I can solve subtraction story problems using a variety of strategies.
Engagement: Teacher teaches students new game, Walk the Plank, in whole group
Exploration: After new game, teacher displays slide with story problem. In pairs, students attempt to solve a
problem. Teacher facilitates by encouraging students to use various strategies and collaborate with partners.
Explain: Teacher explicitly explains using the tens and ones strategy how to solve the subtraction story problem
presented.
Extend/Elaborate: Students use the newly learned strategy in small group rotations.

Rotations are completed in 15 minute intervals. Students rotate with their groups to each station.
M (math games)- DreamBox (teacher assigned subtraction story problems)
A (apply math skills)- Subtraction Story Problem Wixie
T (teacher time) - Use strategy map to solve subtraction story problems.
H (hands on)- Walk the Plank game with a partner

Evaluation: Padlet solving a subtraction story problem with an explanation of how to use the tens and ones strategy
when solving subtraction story problems.
