Introduction to JIS

Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) ( Nippon Kōgyō

Kikaku?) specifies the standards used for industrial activities in Japan. The
standardization process is coordinated by Japanese Industrial Standards
Committee and published through Japanese Standards Association.

JIS covers industrial and mineral products with the exception of (1)
medicines, (2) agricultural chemicals, (3) chemical fertilizers, (4) silk yarn,
and (5) foodstuffs, agricultural and forest products designated under the
Law Concerning Standardization and Proper Labeling of Agricultural and
Forestry Products.
Introduction to JIS
Standards are named like "JIS X 0208:1997", where X denotes area division,
followed by four digits (or five digits for some of the standards
corresponding ISO standards), and the revision release year. Divisions of JIS
and significant standards are:
Introduction to JIS

A – Civil Engineering and Architecture

B – Mechanical Engineering
• JIS B 7021-1989 – Classification and Water Resistibility of
Water Resistant Watches for General Use
• JIS B 7512-1993 – Steel tape measures
• JIS B 7516-1987 – Metal Rules
C – Electronic and Electrical Engineering
• JIS C 0920:2003 – Degrees of protection provided by
enclosures (IP Code)
• JIS C 8800 Glossary of terms for fuel cell power systems
Introduction to JIS

D – Automotive Engineering
E – Railway Engineering
F – Shipbuilding
G – Ferrous Materials and Metallurgy
H – Nonferrous materials and metallurgy[1]
• JIS H 2118 – Aluminum alloy ingots for die castings
• JIS H 2121 – Electrolytic cathode copper
• JIS H 2141 – Silver bullion
• JIS H 2201 – Zinc alloy ingots for die casting

Introduction to ISO - ICS ICS: International Classification for Standards

ISO Numbers and Names In addition may European and Domestic versions be publishes
ISO standards are numbered with the format: as:
• EN ISO nnnnn = European version of the International
"ISO nnnnn:yyyy: Title" Standard
• BS EN ISO nnnnn = British version of the European
where version of the International Standard
Example ISO number
"nnnnn" = standard number • ISO IS228-1:2000: Pipe threads where pressure-tight joints
are not made on the threads -- Part 1: Dimensions,
"yyyy" = year published tolerances and designation
ISO also creates Technical Reports such as references,
"Title" = description of the subject explanations, etc, where "TR" replace "IS" in the standard's
name.
