Abstract

Water hyacinths have been considered as pests by a majority, if not all, of the coastal

communities within the Philippines. Sampad, a barangay in Cardona Rizal is subjected to the

same harms that these pests bring in the community. This includes the deoxygenation of the

lake *insert lake name* which results to fish kill, the blockage of the passageways of boats,

and the destruction of fish pens due to its roots. This paper is a proposed solution to the

mitigation of the proliferation of the water hyacinths within Sampad through its utilization as

a concrete aggregate. Water hyacinths have been proven to significantly increase compressive

strength and decrease water sorptivity which can be highly beneficial to the community of

Sampad, thus utilizing it. The water hyacinths were used as 2D lattices that were put in a

cylindrical container in three different parts – bottom, middle, and top – which served as the

mold for the water hyacinth-incorporated concrete. The concrete mixture used was *insert

ratio*, which was patterned to the usual construction ratio of mixture. The water hyacinth-

incorporated concrete slabs were tested against the standard experimental concrete in terms of

water sorptivity and compressive strength. The results of the experiment were analyzed using

hypothesis testing through a one-way ANOVA. The null hypothesis states that water hyacinth

does not affect the compressive strength and sorptivity of concrete, while the alternative

hypothesis states otherwise. The results showed a failure in rejecting the null hypothesis and

implies that there was no significance difference between the standard experimental concrete

and water hyacinth-incorporated concrete in terms of compressive strength and water

sorptivity. This implies that there are various things that should be taken into consideration

which might have affected the expected results of the experiment, which is thoroughly

discussed in the succeeding parts of this paper.
