ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BEA 2

General
This document covers the Volvo Bus electric system BEA 2 (Bus Electrical
Architecture, version 2). Like previous electric system, BEA 2 is based on data
links and control units.
The control units communicate via both a fast control link J1939 and a slower
information link J1708/1587. Control signals are transmitted on the fast link,
and information and diagnostic signals are transmitted on the slow link.
The data links are recognized as twisted pair conductors.

Type of link Colours

Information link J1708/1587 Gray/orange

Control link J1939-1 Green/yellow

Kontrollänk J1939-2 Green/yellow

Kontrollänk J1939-3 Blue/black

Kontrollänk J1939-7 Blue/mauve

Kontrollänk Volcano Brown/pink

Precautionary measures
3-0-25 R01 Data links
• Do not install data links too close to sources of interference, such as electric
motors and generators.
• The data links must not be cut, joined, lengthened or modified in any other
way.
3-0-25 R02 Control units and other sensitive components
• Remove all control units or disconnect all connectors from the control units
before welding. Mark removed control units with the chassis ID so that they
are re-installed on the same chassis. The LCM, EBS, ECS and BBM-VECU
control units are now permanently fixed on the electrical distribution unit
and, if removed, must be refitted on the electrical distribution unit on com-
pletion of work. The connectors on the tachograph and alternators must also
be undone.
3-0-25 R03 Installation of control units during body building.
• The control units which do not fit inside the electrical distribution unit
should be installed together in an easily accessible location, as far as possi-
ble, and clearly marked on the panels which conceal the control units.
• A list of the control units that the bus is equipped with must be present in the
electrical distribution unit. The list must also specify where they are
installed.
3-0-25 R04 Cable harness and connectors
• Protect cable harnesses and connectors from dirt, weld spatter and mechani-
cal damage during body building.
• Cables delivered with the chassis must not be cut, joined, lengthened or
modified in any other way by the body builder. 3 (92)
Bodybuilding instruction Sect. Group No Date

Buses and coaches 3 0 25 2007-04-11

• Handle the body builder connectors with greatest care. The electronics may
be sensitive to static electricity. Do not touch the pins directly or with con-
ducting tools.

TRANSPORT MOUNTED EQUIPMENT

Transport mounted equipment which is to be moved at body building is
described in section:
• See “Main electrical distribution unit” on page 4.
• See “Control units” on page 21.
• See “Cable harnesses” on page 25.
• See “Instrument” on page 27.
Main electrical distribution unit
3-0-25 R05 Location, electrical distribution unit
• The electrical distribution unit must be installed in a covered, clean, dry,
cool and easily accessible place, normally near the driver’s station.
The electrical distribution unit is 650 x 360 x 150 (H x W x D) mm. The circuit
boards are mounted on a 200 mm wide hinged plate, please refer to figure (1).
For further information, refer to BBI 3-0-26.

Fuse exchange
The transmission ECU (TECU) is protected with a 5 A fuse in the electrical dis-
tribution units, item number 20394200, delivered up to week 200707, see figure
(9). This isn’t sufficient for chassis fitted with Voith gearboxes. For this reason,
the fuse must be exchanged for a fuse with a higher rating. If the fuse blows, the
bus will come to a standstill.
In the electrical distribution unit, a label showing fuses, relays, and their loca-
tion can be found.

High transient voltages from the windscreen wiper motor can damage the light
control module (LCM). For this reason, the adapter cable (A) (part no.
20925865) supplied with the chassis must be installed between the wiper motor
and the cable harness made by the body builder (B) from the 16-pin connector
(C). If it is not possible to connect the adapter cable supplied with the chassis to
the wiper motor used, the cable harness made by the body builder must be pro-
vided with two diodes (part. no. 20382270 or 1N5408). The diodes should be
located in the cable harness as close as possible to the wiper motor. One diode
must be connected with the cathode connected to 53A and the anode to 53, and
the other identical diode must be installed with the cathode connected to 53 and
the anode to GND. Please refer to 18.

Outside temperature sensor

New legal demands, Euro 4.2, on the monitoring of exhaust emission control
systems are enforced on all new diesel powered vehicles registered as from
October 2007. Monitoring is performed by the OBD (On Board Diagnostic) sys-
tem. In the event malfunctions, non erasable fault codes, with information on
active error code time, will be stored for 400 days. In addition, the engine power
will be reduced until the malfunction has been taken care of. The legal demand
regarding exhaust emissions and with that the level of action of the OBD moni-
toring system is valid within a certain ambient temperature interval. The body-
builder is to fit an ambient temperature sensor. To safeguard correct temperature
readings, it is of vital importance that the sensor is fitted according to the
requirements below and that the temperature readings are checked against a ref-
erence temperature meter.
3-0-25 R11 Location of the outside temperature sensor
• The temperature sensor is to be placed in a sheltered and well ventilated
space close to the chassis centre line behind the front bumper within a space
measuring 200 x 200 x 300 mm, see (A) figure (20). The temperature sensor
is to be protected against spray and radiant heat from the road surface and
sources of heat such as defroster system and lamps. To ensure adequate ven-
tilation, the space must be open towards the rear.
• The temperature sensor bracket is to be manufactured of 1 mm sheet metal.
The circular attachment hole for the sensor is to measure 12 mm.

3-0-25 R12 Checking outside temperature sensor reading

• The outside temperature sensor reading must be checked against a reference
sensor connected to a calibrated temperature meter. The reference sensor
should be placed in a tube covered in aluminium foil and attached to the left
hand side mirror or similar location. The outside temperature sensor may
deviate no more than 2ºC from the reading of the reference sensor, see (A)
figure (21).
• The check against the reference equipment is to be carried out on the first
bus of each production run and spot checked at intervals.

Power output for heavy loads

3-0-25 R17 Heavy loads
• The “+Bat” terminal on the main relay is supplied directly from the battery
and must only be used for loads which have to be working even when the
main switch is off. The power must be output through a relay controlled by
BB1:4 (low priority loads, relay) to avoid battery discharge.
Terminal “+30” on the battery switch is connected after the battery main switch
and is suitable for heavy loads. This also applies to the “+30” terminal in the
engine compartment.
• Heavy loads such as the AC system, auxiliary heater and lighting, which are
not absolutely necessary when the engine is not running, should be switched
off automatically when the engine is not running. This can be accomplished
with relays controlled by BB1:9 (alternator charging) or BB1:4 (low priority
loads, relay), for example.
• Loads which are only necessary when driving shall be supplied via relays
controlled by pin BB3:12 (+15 ignition). Power supplied during cranking.
Please refer to body building instruction, 3-0-10 Electrical system general, for
cable dimensions and general quality requirements for electrical systems.
Monitoring of alternators
The alternator monitoring function used should be able to function, irrespective
of the number of alternators the bus is equipped with. If a third alternator is
installed after delivery from the Volvo Bus Corporation, the L-signal from this
alternator must be connected to connector RA1:8, please refer to wiring sched-
ule 20904123, page AC. If no third alternator is installed, the DR signal must be
connected to RA1:8.
If an alternator is not charging, the warning lamp on the instrument panel is lit.
Front and rear electrical distribution boxes
The chassis is equipped with a electrical distribution box beside the battery box
(37) and one in the engine room (38 and 39).
The front electrical distribution box has a manual battery isolator. When
switched off (34), all loads on the chassis, apart from the ones connected to
BB14:1-3, are disconnected.
There are two variants of the rear electrical distribution box - with and without
pre-heating relay. The electrical distribution boxes contain connectors for the
electrical equipment in the bus. In general, the major loads should be connected
to the electrical distribution box closest to the load.
The new electrical distribution boxes will be introduced progressively during
2006:

Direction indicators
3-0-25 R27 Blinking frequency
• There is a statutory demand that broken direction indicator lamps shall show
an increased blinking frequency. For this reason, incandescent indicator
bulbs must be used. The use of LEDs with resistors connected in parallel is
prohibited as the indicator blinking rate will not change if a LED goes out as
long as the resistor is intact.

4. Low priority loads, relay

Pin BB1:4 is an active low output (LDO).
Battery voltage is monitored by the BBM control unit.
The output is activated in one of the following cases:
• After 30 minutes if the ignition is switched on and the engine is not running,
or if the battery voltage falls below 23.6 V.
• If the battery voltage falls below 25.4 V for more than 30 seconds and the
current drain in the bus is more than what is generated.
The output is deactivated when battery voltage exceeds 26.7 V and when engine
speed exceeds 1000 rpm for four seconds.
The output shall be used, via a relay connected to +30, to shut off low priority
loads such as fans, heaters and lamps which are not a legal requirement, when
the battery voltage becomes too low. This is to ensure sufficient battery capacity
for starting the engine.

5. Luggage hatch, open

Pin BB1:5 is an active high input (HDI).
The function warns of open luggage or service hatches.
The function activates a display symbol and the CHECK lamp if the parking
brake is applied. If the parking brake is released the display symbol, buzzer and
STOP lamp are activated.
The function requires the ignition to be on.

6. Safety belt indicator

Pin BB1:6 is an active low input (LDI).
The function lights the “Safety belt” lamp on the instrument panel.

7. Alarm, manual battery isolator

Pin BB1:7 is an active high output (HDO).
The function activates an alarm which warns that the manual battery isolator is
not switched off.
From the factory, this function is connected so that the alarm (Fire Alarm) is
activated when the ignition is switched off and the manual battery isolator is

P The output is activated when the parking brake is applied.

The function can be used to give a warning if the driver leaves the Driver’s
place with the parking brake released, for example.

11. Disconnection of AC compressor

Pin BB1:12 is an active low output. See also BB13:6-7.
The function is used to switch off the AC compressor (Denso) or to reduce
power consumption (Volvo FK40) in situations where the engine needs all avail-
able power for acceleration.
The Denso compressors are started up one at a time by the AC control system
when the signal disappears. The Volvo FK40 compressor runs up to full power
when the signal disappears.
Note that this signal must only be used for temporary disconnection of the
Denso compressors or for temporary disconnection of the FK compressor reduc-
tion valve (if the compressor is equipped with a reduction valve). The signal
must not be used for temporary disconnection of the Volvo FK compressor.
The function is not available on B9L and B9LA.

19. Headlamps off

Pin BB3:1 is an active high input (HDI).
The function turns off the Dipped beam.

20. Prevent ECS action

Pin BB3:2 is an active high input (HDI).
The function blocks the ECS system so that neither level control, raising, lower-
ing nor kneeling can be done. Any level control, raising, lowering or kneeling
that has been initiated will be brought to an end. Further control is blocked as
long as the Prevent ECS Action is active.
The function can be used with a handicap ramp. The function may then be acti-
vated by a switch on the dashboard or a sensor at the ramp.

21. Kneeling position

Pin BB3:3 is a high active output (HDO).
The output is activated when the vehicle is kneeling.
More precisely the output is activated when a certain solenoid valve in the ECS
system is closed. This solenoid valve is closed when kneeling front left or front
right is started. The output is active as long as kneeling continues. When the
vehicle has returned to normal level the solenoid valve is closed and the output
turns low.
This kneeling indication works for kneeling types involving the left or right side
of the front axle. The indication does not work when the vehicle curtseys on
both left and right sides of the front axle.
The function can be used to activate the door brake when the bus is kneeling. It
can also be used to block door opening at a bus stop before the vehicle is kneel-
ing.

22. Cancel kneeling

Pin BB3:4 is an active low input (LDI).
The vehicle returns to normal level when the input is activated.
The function can be used to let the bus return to normal level automatically
when the doors are closed, but must not remain with a constant input signal
when the doors are closed.
This function will be discontinued and replaced by an automatic return to nor-
mal level on release of the parking brake and presence of a signal from BB4:9 to
indicate that the doors have been closed. This function will be introduced as a
standard function but it will be possible to disable it by changing a parameter
(HXU) in the BBM ECU.
This change will take effect week 200650 for all chassis apart from those
intended for use with the Volvo body multiplex system. In this case, the change
will take effect week 200711.

23. Hazard warning lamps

Pin BB3:5 is an active low input (LDI).
The function activates all direction indicators. Compare connector pin BB2:10.
The function can be used for automatic warning when a ramp or lift is in opera-
tion, for example. The hazard warning lamps can also be activated with a switch
on the instrument panel.

24. Daytime running light

Pin BB3:6 is an active high output (HDO)
The output allows the use of separate daytime running lights instead of dipped
beam headlights as daytime running lights. The function will turn on the day-
time running lights when the engine is running and the parking brake has been
released. The signal must be output through a relay.

25. Next stop indicator

Pin BB4:6 is a low digital output (LDO).
The output may control any function when the door brake is active.

37. Door brake, request

Pin BB4:7 is an active low input (LDI).
The door brake function may be available on vehicles with automatic or I-shift
gearboxes, but not on vehicles with manual gearboxes. This function allows the
brakes to be lightly applied on all wheels.
The door brake has been added to give the driver an extra opportunity to have
the bus lightly braked with the engine running, but without needing to use the
service brake or parking brake. The function must only be used on level ground
(inclination < 5%) when the driver is sitting in the driver’s place. When acti-
vated below 5 km/h, the gearbox drive is disengaged, the engine speed is lim-
ited, and a lamp lights up on the instrument panel.
The door brake demand can be engaged in either of two ways:
- manual switch on instrument panel
- door open signal, see figure 41.

53 (92)
Bodybuilding instruction Sect. Group No Date

Buses and coaches 3 0 25 2007-04-11

Forced disconnection of the door brake is possible by means of an override

switch in the event of an incorrect input signal, see figure (41). The switch
should be located in the electrical distribution box and be designed to supply an
HDI signal when in the “Off” position to pin BB4:5 in order to light the “Door
Failure” lamp on the instrument panel.
The following criteria have to be complied with to activate the door brake:
• Door brake requested (via connector pin BB4:7 or via data link from Volvo's
multiplex body system)
• Main switch On
• Ignition On
• Engine running
• The door must have been shut once after “Ignition on”. As from production
week 200649, there is no longer a need to shut the door for the door brake to
be activated.
• Vehicle speed < 5 km/h
• ABS mustn’t be active due to slippery roads. As from week 200649, the door
brake can be activated even if the ABS is active when braking.
• Enough air pressure (above level for low pressure warning)
The door brake is deactivated if the following criteria are complied with:
• Door brake not requested
• Gearbox in drive position
• Accelerator pedal moved from idling position
The door brake is also deactivated at:
• Ignition Off

40. Speed signal X km/h

Pin BB4:10 is an active low output (LDO).
The speed limit setting can be programmed with the VCADS Pro aftermarket
tool. Two parameters are involved in the function. Parameter DHN specifies the
speed limit at decreasing speed, and parameter DHO specifies the speed limit at
increasing speed.
When the speed has decreased to DHN the output is deactivated. The output is
activated again when the speed has increased to DHO.
Pre-set speed limit:
• Standard 20 km/h
• Mexico 100 km/h
According to the European Bus & Coach Directive it must be possible to open
the doors from the outside in case of an accident. The driver is able to block the
emergency opening function at speeds < 20 km/ h. As a legal requirement, the
function must automatically return to default position when the bus reaches 20
km/h again

51. Radio
Connection pin BB10:1 is an active high output (HDO). The output is intended
for remote control of an extra power amplifier giving +12 V when the radio
is on.
Pin BB10:3 is an active high output (HDO) giving +15 supply (12 V).
Pin BB10:5 is an active high output (HDO) giving +30 supply (12 V).
Pin BB10:7 gives ground connection.
Pin BB10:9 GSM mute.

52. Compensation of power and torque losses (Parasitic Losses)

when the AC compressor is connected.
Pins BB1:10 and BB13:1-3 are active high inputs.
The function compensates for torque losses, caused by connecting one or more
AC compressors, to make maximum permissible torque available again. The
function is only available on buses equipped with automatic transmission (Voith
and ZF).
Input BB1:10 registers the signal, which activates the magnetic coupling for the
compressor (Volvo FK or Denso no. 1). Input BB13:1 registers the signal, which
activates the Volvo FK compressor reduction valve (if the compressor is
equipped with a reduction valve). Together with the signal on BB1:10, the sig-
nal entering BB13:1 means that the Volvo FK compressor runs at half power.
Inputs BB13:2 and BB13:3 register the signals which activate the solenoid
clutch for Denso compressor no. 2 and 3.
The EMS and BBM unit software must be parametrised to determine the com-
pressor to be used.
Table 17 shows the connection of the sensor signals.

53. Pinch protection

Pin BB13:4 is an active high input.
If the pinch protection is activated when the bus is lowered more than 20 mm,
the bus returns to the suspension height it has before lowering. After 5 seconds
in the lowered position, the pinch protection is no longer activated by the ECS

control unit and the bus is not raised unless the pinch protection is then acti-
vated.
The “Pinch protection” symbol on the instrument panel lights up when the pinch
protection has been activated.
The driver can switch the function off via the menu system in the instrument
panel, and it remains shut off until the ignition is switched off.
The function requires the ignition to be on.

54. 7-pin DIN connector on front electrical distribution box

Pins BB14:1-3 (F111 and F110) are intended for small loads which must have
power supply (B+) even when the manual battery isolator is switched off.
Examples of small loads are the clock and alarm, and the control units for the
heating etc. The loads connected to BB14:1-3 must not draw more than 20 mA
together at standstill. F111 and F110 should be given suitably small fuses.
Pins BB14:4-7 (F107-F109) are active high outputs (HDO) and provide +30
supplies when the manual battery isolator is switched on. The output can be
used to shut down body functions when the +30 power supply is switched off.

55. Information link body multiplex

Only for buses with Volvo's body multiplex electrical system.
Pins BMUX:1 (1708 A) and BMUX:2 (1708 B) are intended for connection to
the D-bus information link.

56. External main switch

Only for buses with Volvo's body multiplex electrical system
Pins BMUX:3 and BMUX:4 are intended for an external main switch.

If the bus is to be made ready for use with a trailer, pins BB7:5 and BB7:6 (extra
indicators) must be connected to a relay which controls the trailer indicators. Pin
BB7:11 (stop lamp) must be connected to a relay which controls the stop lamp.
The indicator tell-tale on the instrument panel only works if the trailer lamps are
connected and the indicator bulbs are intact. If there is no indication when the
trailer lamps are connected, this means that one of the indicator bulbs has failed.
Extra direction indicator lamps (BB7:5 and BB7:6) are not monitored.

Lighting control unit, programming

The Light Control Module (LCM) must be programmed to give the desired
functions. It is most efficient to do the programming when the chassis is manu-
factured, by including the desired variant strings in the production order. The
functions can also be adjusted afterwards by using the VCADS Pro or VBEST
tools.
When choosing variant strings in the table (18) do as follows. A variant must
always be chosen from each one of the variant families:
• Dipped beam,
• Main beam (standard),
• Additional main beam,
• Daytime running light,
• Front fog lamp front
• Front fog lamp rear
• Rear lights
• Retarder brake light.
Some combinations are not permissible which is seen in the table.
3-0-25 R29 Vehicle Identification Card (VIC)
• Prior to bodybuilding, the LCM programming must be matched with the
desired lighting configuration, see Vehicle Identification Card delivered with
each chassis. The VIC shows status at time of delivery.
Should the VIC and the LCM programming not match, bodybuilders must con-
tact the local Volvo Bus representative.

Rocker switches, V-Series Contura V

The removable actuators can be used with any of the rocker switches. All actua-
tors have a laser etched symbol and a bar shaped lens for the indicator lamp.
According to a new international switch standard (ISO 12214), the switch (if
mounted vertically) opens the circuit when the bottom of the switch at the bar
shaped lens is pressed (OFF).The switch closes the circuit when the top of the
switch at the symbol is pressed (ON).
Two (OFF-ON) and three-position (OFF-ON-ON) switches are used. The sec-
ond ON position of the three-position switch is often spring loaded. For exam-
ple, the first ON position may be used for the windscreen wipers and the second
ON position for the windscreen washers.
When the lamps are switched on, a yellow lamp colour is used to illuminate the
switch symbol. A green lamp colour is used for the bar shaped lens to indicate
that the switch is on.

With the ignition turned on and the light control switch in any position, the wig-
wag lights and the low beam headlamps are activated when the following condi-
tions have been fulfilled:

Activated lamps Switch Speed Door

Wig-wag lamps On 5 km/h or less Any door open

Low beam On ----------------------- Any door open

Table 4: Conditions for activation of wig-wag and low beam lamps

Note! The high beam headlamps cannot be used while the low beam headlamps
and wig-wag lamps are flashing.
The wig-wag lamps and the low beam headlamps are de-activated when one of
the following conditions have been fulfilled:

De-activated lamps Switch Speed Door

Wig-wag lamps Off ----------------------- 25 seconds after

doors closed

Low beam Off 5 km/h or more All doors closed

Table 5: Conditions for de-activation of wig-wag and low beam lamps

Bodybuilders may also choose to control the hazard lamps by means of a pulsed
signal (connected to BB2:10).
The power to the wig-wag lamps must be output through a relay controlled by
BB3:6 and BB5:6, respectively, for the wig-wag lamps to function.
Function coordination
The wig-wag lamps are not synchronised with the hazard lamps.
The school bus warning lamps have higher priory than all other lamps.
Fog lights cannot replace low beam headlights as school bus warning lights.
