The Establishment of
the Galleon Trade
Small businesses and handicraft industries
diminished during the time of the Galleon Trade.

The Galleon Trade cut off all previous

associations of the Philippines with other
countries in Asia and the Middle East.

Business was only conducted with Spain through

New Spain or Mexico.
Forced Labor
Spain also extinguished the natives’ love of work
because of the implementation of forced labor.

The Filipinos were compelled to work in shipyards,

roads, and other public works, abandoning
agriculture, industry, and commerce
Foreign
Spain did not protect the people
against foreign invaders and pirates.

Invaders Sulu and Mindanao; started the first

piratical attacks in Bantayan, (near

and
cebu).

Numerous accounts of natives were

Piratical
killed, their houses burned, and their
lands destroyed.

Attacks The Filipinos lost interest in

cultivating their lands and in
rebuilding the industries that were
shut down.
MORGA, WHO RECOUNTS THE FIRST PIRATICAL
INVASION, SAYS:

The boldness of these people of Mindanao did great damage to

the Visayan Islands as much by what they did in them as by the
fear and fright which the native acquired, because the latter were
in the power of the Spaniards, who held them subject and
tributary and unarmed, in such manner that they did not protect
them from their enemies or leave them means with which to
defend themselves,
AS THEY DID WHEN THERE WERE NO SPANIARDS IN
THE COUNTRY"
Religious System
The friars have deceived many by making
them believe that if these plantations were
prospering, it was because it was under
their care, thus indolence was emphasized.
 Spanish
Spanish rulers were a bad
example to despise manual labor.
The officials reported to work at
noon and left early, all the while

rulers
doing nothing in line with their
duties.
Gambling
Gambling did not exist before the Spaniards came in the
Philippines. Almost everyday there were cock-fights.

"soltada", "presto", "logro", "pago"

was a result of the last means for the natives to make a

living

the government officials and friars were the first to

engage in all sorts of bets and gambles.
Educational
What was being taught in the
schools were repetitive prayers
and other things that could not be
used by the students to lead the

System country to progress.

There were no courses in

Agriculture, Industry, etc., which
were badly needed by the
Philippines during those times.
