My whole group area and teachers’ desk/small group area, are placed in a way that has
the students facing the south wall so I can always face the door, in case of an emergence. My
literacy center is placed across the room from the other four centers so students can focus on
their reading or writing in a quieter environment (Dumadag). I have also placed a small desk in
the center so students may work on writing skills. I have placed the calm down area near the
literacy center and my desk so it is a quiet space where I can keep a close eye on the students
who use it. My cubbies are placed at the entrance of the room so students can easily drop their
bags off before finding their seats. My dramatic play center is in the far corner of the room, next
to the music/art center. These centers are going to be the noisiest, so I wanted them far away
from the quieter centers. The motor skills center is placed on a rug near the
math/science/discovery center so students can work on the floor with plenty of space. The
math/science/discovery center has a small desk for activities that may require one and is next to
the motor skills center because these centers could easily be combined some days. All centers,
except literacy, are placed along one side of the room so it is easy for student to transition from
one center to another. My small group area is placed away from the centers so, if I am working
with a small group, I can do so without distractions. Students desk are arranged in the middle of
the room for group seating (Clendenin).
