I. Part 1
1. Home/ Accommodation
I live in a terraced house that has a living room, a kitchen, three bed rooms, two
bathrooms and a lovely back garden. It’s not really a spacious house, but it’s just right
for me and my family.
I live with my parents and my siblings. We always get on well with each other and have
a lot of fun.
I’ve lived there since I was a child, until I graduated from high school and moved to the
city to enroll at university, where I lived in a student dormitory during the semester.
(If you answer you haven't lived there long) What’s the difference between where you
are living now and where you have lived in the past?
Living in a dorm with other roommates is totally different from living in my own house.
My current residential area is quite small and it’s very noisy because there are a lot of
people there and I don’t have my own space. Conversely, when I was living at home, I
had my own spacious room and it made me feel comfortable.
Which room does your family spend most of the time in?
It’s definitely the kitchen. Not only lunch or dinner time but all our family reunions take
place in the kitchen where all the family members get together to eat tasty meals, and
chat to each other – it’s a really harmonious atmosphere.
To be honest, most of the transport facilities to my place are not very modern. The bus
service from my work place to home is irregular and usually overcrowded.
I prefer living in a house to a flat because I value my privacy and need my own space.
Owning an independent house, I can plan and design a house layout to suit myself.
Moreover, I can modify a house according to the size of the family.
Please describe the room you live in.
My current room is actually more like a bedsit. It is a multi – purpose room, I use it to
sleep and study as well. It is painted in pink, that’s my favorite color with a bed, a
cupboard and desk. It’s not really spacious but it’s just right for me.
I prefer my bedroom most due to its convenience and privacy. Because of my stressful
work I want to be in a quiet place and concentrate on my work. In my own room, I’m
never disturbed by anyone else.

2. Study
I started primary school when I was 7. 5 years later, I went to secondary school at 12.
Then at 16, I made it to a high school for gifted students in my hometown. In my
country, highschool education lasts 3 years, then I went onto higher education at the
Foreign Trade University where I’m currently studying economics.
Well, my major is External Economics. I have mastered the basics of economics and
socio-economics, combined with business knowledge mainly related to the import and
export business.
Well, I used to be very passionate about drawing when I was a little girl. It was fun to
work with brushes and colors, you know, as it was the time when I could indulge in my
own creative world.
To be honest, I don’t think so. Our system has somehow become unduly stressful, does
not promote creativity and the ability to be critical due to the fact that our society still
cares way too much about grades and schools consequently focuses on an exam-driven
curriculum, which I find quite impractical.
Absolutely! It’s great to join the workforce, especially when I can do the job I love. Not
only will it pay the bills, but it’ll also give me the joy of making a contribution. It’s hard
to be happy and fulfilled without working, you know.

I’m currently working as a graphic designer for a fashion magazine for youngsters
Well I’m mainly responsible for designing the cover of the magazine. I normally work
with the concept team to make sure that the final product will both attract the potential
buyer’s attention and express the theme of the magazine.
Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?
I guess it’s because of my artistic passion. The process of creating beautiful things is
somehow intriguing to me, so I chose to be a graphic designer, which combines both art
and technology. It’s quite interesting, you know.
Well, if possible, I’d like to be a freelance writer. Actually I’m a big fan of action
movies, and I also care about healthy living, so, I’d love to write about these topics and
share my stories with people of the same interest.
My company is not huge, it’s just a small art designoffice, but is definitely an
inspirational workplace with a young, creative, and extremely passionate team. We work
on the basis of mutual understanding and respect for each other, so it’s kind of an ideal
environment for me.
Most of the time. It’s rewarding to co-work on projects with amazing people in an open
and supportive environment to bring out an art production that will ultimately give me a
sense of satisfaction and pride.
Well, the perk of being a graphic designer is that you’ll surround yourself with inspiring
images everyday. My daily working life involves seeking out inspiration in all sorts of
places, researching incredible illustrations and graphics, and creating them too. It’s great,
I think.
What I don’t like about this job is that our personal taste in design varies, and normally
I’ll have to do a thousand edits to get the final product that meets the demand of my boss
while still * relating / staying faithful to /remaining trueto the initial concept.
* conform means ‘to behave according to the usual standards of behaviour that are
expected by a group or society’ – this does not relate to things like ‘concepts’.

it sounds good to me. Still, I can hardly listen to Vietnamese traditional music, some
countries’ folk songs and several tracks belonging to the classical genre.
The first time I heard a rock song was when my dad turned on the TV and there was a
performance of a very famous rock band in Vietnam called “Buc Tuong”. It was
amazing. I started searching for more songs from the Vietnamese band, and songs
belonging to the same genre, and have decided ever since that rock music would be a
part of my spiritual life.
Relaxed and free, I guess. Music, to me, is a way of hiding from all the hustle and
bustle of everyday life. I listen to music when I’m under a lot of pressure, and I just feel
so fine. It’s the feeling of finally coming home after years and years of living far away, I
think.

(Answer) I’m afraid there is no definite answer for this question, but it may probably be
the summer.
(Give a reason for your answer) For a country with tropical climate like ours, it’s
intensely hot, which exhausts people during the day, even at night. In some regions,
extreme weather in the summer will lead to frequent droughts and impairs the harvests
there.
(Give a reason for your answer) Basically, summer is the hottest season of the year,
while winter is coldest. In comparison, autumn and spring are quite pleasant seasons.
Moreover, in summer people, love to wear light clothes while in winter, the use of
woolen clothes increase. Summer and winter are longer seasons, while autumn and
spring are shorter ones.

VD: I find it strange when you are making a solo trip to Europre.
15. Sleep
How long should people sleep for the benefit of their health? Why?
(Answer) I’m not too sure, but according to what I have read, around 8 hours of sleep per
day would be optimal. (Give reason for your answer) This is said to be the perfect amount
of time for people to rejuvenate and recharge their minds and bodies. If people constantly
sleep a lot more than this recommended amount of time, they are more likely to be prone
to obesity, which will certainly carry serious health risks.
Do you think that the old should sleep more than the young? Why?
(Answer) No, I don’t think that should be the case. (Give reason for your answer) I believe
that the amount of time people spend resting should correlate with how much they exert
themselves during the day. Usually, young people spend more of their energy on physical
activities so it’s more reasonable for the young to sleep more than the elderly.
What do you do to improve sleeping quality?
(Answer) There are several measures that can be taken to assure a quality sleep. (Give
reason for your answer) First, I make sure that I work out at the gym or take gentle
exercise as I usually find myself drifting to sleep faster and sleep more soundly after I
have taken regular exercise during the daytime. In addition, I find that some soothing
music and comfy pillows are really helpful in ensuring a good night’s sleep.
Do you think it's effective?
(Answer) Yes, from my personal experience, the solutions I mentioned have proved to be
quite effective. (Give reason for your answer) When I’m drained after a long day or I’ve
done a hardcore work-out at the fitness centre, I am often sore all over and crave for some
rest. Then, nothing is more satisfying than to crash out at night, falling asleep while
listening to slow and relaxing melodies.

pairs of shoes.

No, we don’t have one at the moment, but I think my parents are planning to buy some
land so that we can have our own little garden. My mom’s really into flowers, you see;
she’s wanted to have a garden for herself ever since she was young.
2. Do many people in Vietnam have their own garden?
In the inner city areas- no, there’s no room for gardens, they are just concrete jungles.
But in the suburbs or in the countryside then yes, lots of people have their own garden. I
mean my aunts and uncles live in the countryside and they have very large gardens in
which they plant tons of vegetables and flowers.
3. If someone has a private garden in Vietnam, do they usually prefer to grow
flowers or vegetables?
It depends, I think. I’ve never seen anyone with a private garden in the city, but if there is
one, then the owner must want to grow flowers. Taking care of vegetables in the city
requires a lot of work and effort. People from the countryside, on the other hand, often
grow vegetables on their private plots.
4. (Why?) Have you ever grown anything? (in a garden, or possibly in a flower
pot)
I used to grow some sort of beans in a very small pot back when I was in primary school.

very successful though; the rats in the yard just kept eating all the beans and I couldn’t
bring anything to class at the time.

winter.
3. Where do you swim in your city?
My school possesses a standardized swimming pool, which is very popular among

interesting and wonderful. They help us develop a sense of sharing whether they are

It depends. Normally, I'm more of a loner and generally spend more time in solitude than

logically happens. Otherwise, you can make cyber friends through social networks like
Facebook or Twitter.
10. Do adults and children make friends in the same way?
Adults use self disclosure to develop trust and loyalty among friends. This is quite

Of course it is possible to establish real friendships with someone online. What you need

quite big, covered by a lot of hundred-year-old trees, which block most of the sunlight.
Of course, running has been scientifically proved beneficial to the health. As I said,
running is instrumental in reducing the amount of cholesterol inside my body as well as
stimulating my mental health.

My favourite animal is a dog because not only are they cute but they are also quite smart.
Sometimes, I can feel the emotional connection between dogs and myself, which makes
dogs stand out from other animals.

such as pythons or snakes, which are relatively dangerous in my opinion.

country/hometown?
Yes, to be honest. Just some years ago, coming across a husky in Vietnam was
infeasible, while at the present, huskies are a lot more common, along with other kinds of
fancy pets such as Alaska dogs.
It depends. If it is a vertical city, then the answer is no as raising a pet might be quite
bothering for those living in the same block as us. In the of a horizontal city, I think it’s
pretty fine to raise one.
Absolutely yes. Animals are a great source of entertainment for children, which are a
lot healthier than spending time at computer screens or other technologies.
Since dogs and cats are child-friendly, I believe that the kids will enjoy spending time
around these two kinds of pet. My 8-year-old sister, for example, has never stopped
dreaming of having a dog to raise.
When I was in my childhood, just like my sister, I also wanted a dog. My parents
decided to buy one for me and we combined forces to take care of the my family’s
beloved pet. Sadly, it was involved in a fatal accident, which made me depressed for 2
months.

of water should reach 3 to 4 litres, which is higher than the recommended standard of 2
litres per day for the majority of people.
As tap water contains a high amount of chemicals albeit at a low and safe level, I prefer
bottled water. A majority of the population in Vietnam also prefer bottled water to tap
water because it tastes a lot better and is more natural.
To be honest, tap water can be relatively dirty due to the fact that the pipeline is not
hygienic. When water flows through the pipeline, the dirt inside the pipeline can be
trapped in the water and contaminate the water.

As I said before, tap water contains a low level of chloride, which makes the water taste

choice.

Well, the event happened a month ago, when I helped my teacher organize a seminar
providing fundamental skills and techniques in Translation held by the English
Department. At that time, I was quite occupied with my preparation for the upcoming
examination and my part-time job as a tutor, but still dedicated part of my time to planning
and contributing to the overall success of the seminar.
As the main organizer of the event, I was in charge of many tasks. My teacher had
instructed me to come up with a detailed timeline, so that everything would move
smoothly. On the one hand, I delegated tasks to my members accordingly, so that they
could help with everything from preparing schedules and budgets, to making invites and
posters, to welcoming in guests and doing the work of cleaning up afterward. Most
importantly, I was the brains behind the content of the seminar, which included different
Translation techniques and respective examples.
After the event, I was filled with contentment when receiving a great deal of positive
feedback. And my teacher offered really encouraging words to me. She said that I could
be a potential leader in group work due to my listening attentively to other students’
opinions, analyzing them carefully and making final decisions with an objective attitude.

also opens a small stall to sell food or souvenirs to customers of all ages, even parents or
graduate students.
(When it happened)
It is celebrated annually, frequently falling in the middle of March. As these camping days
take place in the Spring, the weather is always nice and comfortable, which offers students
the chance to enjoy the event to the fullest. We have two camping days with an overnight
stay, so there are a lot of preparations to make before the event.

Actually, I can remember quite a few occasions when I tried to raise my helping hands to
others. Well, today I'd like to talk about a situation when I helped a person who had been
waiting to cross a road with heavy traffic for an hour. I vividly remember that it was early
in the morning, when I was walking around the streets near my house, I noticed an old
person standing on the other side of the road with the aim of crossing the street. He was
old and quite senile, and he reminded me of my departed grandfather, to whom I felt
really attached.
When I offered him help to cross the road, his eyes were full of appreciation and delight.
Maybe he did not expect to receive assistance from such a young girl. On asking about his
intended destination in the city, I realized that he was going in the wrong direction.
Luckily, as this is my own neighborhood, I know the roads quite well, and was able to
direct him to the correct one. When I accompanied him down 3 or 4 more roads, he shared
a lot of engaging stories about himself.

Taking up scuba-diving was by far one of the most important events in my life. To be
honest, I had never been very keen on sports before, especially as far as water sports
were concerned, but once I tried scuba-diving, I completely changed my attitude towards
an active way of life. I had not been familiar with the equipment that professional divers
use either until one holiday in Nha Trang, when my father came up with the idea of taking
a course in scuba-diving.
It was last summer when my whole family celebrated my parents’ wedding anniversary in
Nha Trang. As the weather was unbearably hot, we wanted to travel to places with
breathtaking beaches, sunshine and delicious sea food. While we were walking alongside
the beach, my father suggested I experience scuba-diving, with the hope that I could be
more physically and mentally able to confront the university entrance examination.

PART 3:
6. Describe another important event
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, there are a variety of crucial events in one’s
life that are worth recalling. (Explain your reason or reasons) Last year’s Tet holiday is
quite memorable because our extended family reunited and had a whale of time. In our
tradition, we start the year with the hope of eliminating the bitterness and failure of the
past year and start a fresh year with the hope of fortune and happiness. (Give an example
(often a personal example)) During Tet, there are a lot of long-preserved customs, such
as giving lucky money to children, visiting friends’ houses and going to churches, temples
or pagodas to pray for their family.
7. Is it possible for the Vietnamese chairman to write letters for citizens over 100
years old as the queen write letters for them in her country?
(Give a direct answer to the question) This question is quite out of my depth, to be honest,
yet I would say that it is quite possible. (Explain your reason or reasons) Actually, I just
know that our national chairman maintains the annual tradition of sending the formal
Happy New Year’s letter to citizens of every part of the country.
8. How do people celebrate public events?
(Give a direct answer to the question) In my opinion, the ways to celebrate public events
vary from country to country and even from people to people (Explain your reason or
reasons) During major public events, street lights change colors, decorations are hung,
and festivals turn sleepy downtowns into large-scale celebrations for locals. Just as
families and individuals adorn their homes with ornaments and trimmings, cities use their
public spaces to welcome the end of the year and local holidays. (Give an example (often
a personal example)) For example, each year on December 31st, the streets and squares
of big cities like Sai Gon or Ha Noi are filled with people celebrating the new year.
9. Do you think it is important to celebrate events?
(Give a direct answer to the question) Of course it is. Festivals have both social and
economic benefits. (Explain your reason or reasons) Festivals act like stress relievers and
help us balance our emotions. More positivity naturally lowers negativity. It also provides
an opportunity to reduce friction and brings estranged friends and relatives together in a
bond of love. (Give an example (often a personal example)) As a matter of fact, many
celebrations focus on cultural or ethnic topics and seek to inform community members of
their traditions. They involve community elders sharing stories and experiences; setting
templates for maintaining unity among families.
10. Should the event be prepared in advance?
(Give a direct answer to the question) Probably yes. (Explain your reason or reasons)
It is true to say that the success of any event is the result of a careful and thorough plan.
Creating this plan takes time and effort which can sometimes take a great deal of time to
construct. After all, proper preparations prevent unexpected incidents and ensure
everybody in the event feels contented.
11. How to prepare an activity?
(Give a direct answer to the question) There are a lot of considerations when preparing
for an activity. (Give an example (often a personal example)) Clear objectives should be
devised, teammates or members should be gathered and delegated tasks appropriately.
They can help with everything from preparing schedules and budgets, to making invites
and posters, to welcoming in guests and doing the dirty work of cleaning up afterward.
Besides, all possible expenses, incomes, sponsors, and contingent expenses for the activity
should be included.
Vocabulary:
I’m going to describe a friend of mine, Phuong Chau, who is an intelligent girl. We have
been through thick and thin for about 15 years since primary school, so we know each
other inside out. Chau is full of energy and always displays a cheerful disposition towards
others, which has endeared her to people she comes into contact with.
I met Chau on the very first day in primary school, and her warm gestures comforted me
a great deal. Despite her young age at that time, Chau seemed really mature and she helped
me a lot during the school years. We have maintained our friendship over a decade, and
shared both successes and hardships with each other. Practically, no words can describe
the bond between us.

8. Describe a city that you would like to visit. You should say:
Where it is
(Where it is) Today I’ll talk about the city which has been crowned the most visited city
in the world and it is also the one that I’ve dreamed of visiting for years. It’s Hong Kong.
Hong Kong, a special administrative region belonging to the People’s Republic of China,
is one of the four Asian tigers due to its outstanding economic performance under the
rule of Great Britain before being handed back to China. It is slightly more than 2 hrs
flight time from Ho Chi Minh city, where I am based. Bristling with skyscrapers, Hong
Kong’s world class Victoria Harbour is the hub of thousands of tourists every year,
especially at the end of the year when the New Year Eve’s eye-catching fireworks
display is held.
(What people do there) Hong Kong is one of the only two countries in Asia, apart from
Japan, where there is a Disneyland resort. People, especially families, consider it as a
must-visit place in Hong Kong. Apart from Disneyland, the mountains in Hong Kong
offer people the best view of the city’s skyline and Victoria Harbour, so the mountains
around the harbour also attract an immense number of trekkers.
(How you know it) I first heard of Hong Kong when I studied history in grade 5, since
when I was inspired to pay a visit to the city once in my life, although it is not easy for a
person with a Third World passport.
(Explain why you want to go there) I would like to visit Hong Kong for two reasons.
First, not only does the city have beautifully designed buildings but it also has national
parks, mountains and other natural tourist resources. The other reason is because Hong
Kong has the one of the best trains in the world. I would like to try their MTR sometime!

9. Describe an interesting place in your country that not many tourists get there.
You should say:
Where it is located
Why it is interesting
(Why it is interesting) There are many factors which make great contributions
towards the specialty of this statue. First, being located on top of a mountain, it offers
the best view of the city’s residential area as well as the ocean. Second, the stairs leading
to the statue are surrounded by so much greenery, which, of course, partly turns down
the heat and makes it easier for trekkers to reach the destination. Its openness to all
religions not only for Christianity is the final reason.
(What you can do there) Visitors can choose to climb the stairs, which takes shorter
amount of time and effort, or go trekking. Once they reach the base of the statue, it is
compulsory that all belongings be put outside in the interests of security before visitors
continue climbing up the stairs built inside the statue leading to the shoulders of Jesus.
Standing there, people can take photos and selfies.
(Why few people go there) There are many reasons for which the statue has not caught
people’s attention. The most important factor is that Vung Tau is a coastal city, which
is, however, not as well-known as Nha Trang or Phan Thiet. It is a fact that not many
people will ever pay a visit to another beach once they have already visited one which is
far more interesting.

PART 3:
With more than 3000 km of coastline, crystal clear beaches and endless shores are the
main kind of Vietnam tourism. Best beaches, bays and islands can be found in Central
Vietnam. For example, Nha Trang’s world class island resorts attract thousands of
“Crazy rich Asians” who are willing to spend their cash without a care in the world.
Mass tourism and its aftermaths have left experts scratching their heads recently. To
me, it is pressing that rules be imposed and strict punishments be introduced for
offenders. Apart from that, restriction, if necessary, should be made in order to ward off
mass tourism and lose control of the issue.
First, people needn’t stand in a long queue or get lost in a flock of tourists. Also, the
likelihood of them enjoying the time at the attraction is considerably higher due to the
fact that they can have more chances to explore deeply the site and spend more time
without having to be concerned about other people who stand behind waiting for them.
4. What are the disadvantages when there are too many tourists in one site?
When such numbers of tourists are too large for one site, it will cause many
disadvantages. For example, people cannot get an acceptable photo with the landmark
because of an immense number of people in the background. Also, people’s security is at
risk as they cannot control their belongings well enough when there are too many people
around them.

(What content it includes) The boom of IT has triggered a virtual competition for
websites in which websites operators will have to go to great lengths to make their sites
eye-catching, informative and useful. One of the best websites I’ve ever known is CNN,
which is an American news-based website whose headquarter is located in Atlanta. CNN
covers a wide range of topics, from politics to tourism, from the U.S.A to all 4 other
continents. The information of each category is all organised efficiently, allowing readers
to easily find what they are in need of.
(How and when you found it) As soon as I moved up to the intermediate level of
English proficiency, the teacher ordered us to read English-written magazines or
newspapers. After each week, there would be a quiz in order to test students’ knowledge
about what was mentioned in the article that the teacher gave us. This developed such a
habit which encouraged me read English newspapers frequently, which was an
important impetus for the improvement of my language command.
(How often you visit this website) I literally visit it semi-daily or daily to keep pace
with what’s happening around the world so that I am not left behind. The categories on
which I am keen are tourism and politics.
(Why you think it is interesting) This website stands out as one of the best website due
to several reasons. First, the content is well written by scholars who have sufficient
knowledge about their fields, meaning that their content can be trustworthy. Second, for
some special articles, the way of transmission of information is rather beautifully
designed with colours and pictures as well as animation, which is pretty Powerpoint-like.

11. Describe an impressive work of art such as painting or sculpture you saw. You
should say:
What it is
(What it is) The Renaissance in Europe gave birth to many a talented musician and
artist. Being a European culture enthusiast, I am especially attracted by masterpieces by
the artists from Europe, particularly those living in the Renaissance period. The piece of
art that I aspire to see once in real life is the portrayal of Mona Lisa, which brought
glory to Picasso’s name.
(Where and when you first saw this work of art) I first saw this portrait in the book of
world art when I was in grade 4 or 5. Of course, it was in an art lesson that I stumbled
upon this piece.
(What it looks like) When hearing the name of the artwork, people can assume that it
depicts a woman named Mona Lisa. This artwork’s popularity went far beyond people’s
imagination as the woman depicted was not a public figure or so. But it is the enigma in
her eyes and smile that caught other artists’ attention and made Mona Lisa well-known
worldwide till now.
(Explain why you like it) Like many other people, the subject's expression, which is
frequently described as enigmatic, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric
illusionism were novel qualities that have contributed to my interest in the work.
Moreover, the story of this portrait painting is also another reason. It is believed that the
painting has been stolen and the one in Louvre Museum is the fake one. Again, another
mystery that has not been shed light on.

Part 3:
6. Do you think people’s preference for arts changed in the past few years?
I really think so. As the society develops, people’s mindset also witnesses changes.
People now are more keen on the quality of the artwork, meaning that artworks now
should be made with a high quality if they aim at the general public. In the past, it is
rather easy for a singer to become famous as long as they can sing. However, a singer
ability now will be evaluated on their voice and the way they convey the song also.

12. Describe someone you have met recently and would like to know more about.
You should say:
Who this person is
Explain why you would like to know more about this person
(Who this person is) Today, I would like to share with you something about the person
that I’ve just met in my volunteer campaign in Ben Tre province with the Singapore
Temasek Junior College. Wenxin, a Singaporean student, is the one to whom I esteem
the most and would like to know more about. Wenxin is a 17-year-old student who
studies 3 core subjects: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. However, an abiding
passion for environmental science has given her the incentive to take Geography along
with the 3 aforementioned subjects in preparation for the School of Design and
Environment of the National University of Singapore entrance exam.
(What you did or talked about with this person) We were on the same trip called the
Temasek Overseas Outreach Programme in order to teach English to children and give
workers a hand with concreting the school yard. Wenxin and I were in the same group,
which meant that we joined hands to prepare and deliver the lessons. Wenxin is a
hardworking and sympathetic person. During our 11-day campaign, neither was she at a
variance with me nor got on my nerves. She was never likely to swerve an inch from
her duty, which shed light on doubts casted on her by the teachers and the facilitator. We
really did have butterflies in our stomachs because it was our first time being a teacher,
but we rose to the occasion wonderfully and received recognition for our abilities from
the teacher.
(Explain why you would like to know more about this person) I would like to know
more about Wenxin because she is so kind and mature for a 17-year-old like her. I was
quite impressed by her performance as such a 17-year-old is not supposed to handle a
group of rambunctious kids who like to run around all the time. But she came and
proved me wrong!

13. Describe a photo that you remember well. You should say:
What is in the photo
(What is in the photo) Everyone at least takes a photo once in their lives, and of course,
I am not an exception. However, there is one photo which imprinted my memory with
so much to remember is the group photo in Malaysia with the Petronas Twin Towers in
the background. My cousins and I went on a trip to Malaysia last year and we paid a
visit to Malaysia’s biggest pride – the Petronas Towers. The towers used to notch up
world’s tallest building before witnessing the strong rise of other skyscrapers. The Kuala
Lumpur’s top tourist attraction and most photographed landmark is located in the heart
of the capital city, surrounded by a cluster of the smaller, but by no means small,
skyscrapers. People say that you haven’t been to Kuala Lumpur if you haven’t got a
picture with the towers.
(When it was taken) The photo was taken on our trip to Kuala Lumpur in 2017’s
summer. It was one of the most memorable trips I have ever gone on in my entire life.
We had to wake up at 3 am so that we could get a ticket to the Sky Bridge when it flung
free tickets to early birds. Of course, it was not easy whatsoever as one of the members
of our group passed out for more than 15 minutes at the base of the towers before
coming round.
(Who took that photo) We all wanted to be in the photo. Therefore, we had to get other
tourists to take photos for us. This is what made that photo so special.
(And explain why you remember it so well) I told a person who could not English at
all to get other tourists to take a photo for us. And what turned out was that she came
across a Vietnamese one. The Vietnamese tourist was immediately impressed by her
asked my cousin for her contact. They got married afterwards.

14. Describe a time when you see an interesting animal. You should say:
What the animal was
(What the animal was) During our trip to Ben Tre province, we paid a visit to a tourist
attraction there called Con Phung. This attraction is famous for its variety of tropical
fruits and honey; however, what imprinted my memory with the most to remember was
the python of which everyone was so afraid.
(When and where you saw it) I saw the python when we went on a field trip to Con
Phung in Ben Tre province some weeks ago. It was the biggest python I have ever seen
in my entire life. According to the tour guide, the python was nearly 6 years old now and
it has given birth to 2 other pythons before being made use of for the purpose of
tourism.
(What it was doing) When we approached the python, it was being fed by a local
worker. After having a short break, it went back on track again for the entertainment of
those rambunctious tourists who wanted a picture with it. Pictures with a python have
been in vogue and gone viral worldwide, that’s why I was far from alone in wanting a
picture with the python. Yet, a large number of members in our group were quite scared
of the animal that they did not even touch it. However, the boys did not hesitate to let the
animal grab the neck and took some once-in-a-lifetime photos.
(Tell us how you felt about the animal) The python, if not triggered, in general would
not attack human beings. The one I saw in Con Phung was not an exception as it was so
friendly with the tourists. However, as an animal enthusiast, I do not support this practice
as this might not do harm to the animal at first hand, but in the long run, such use of
animals for tourism purpose hurts the animals a lot because sometimes they will have to
overwork, which might result in death.
Cái nhìn đầy giận giữ đó sẽ bị ghi vào trí nhớ của cô ấy mãi mãi.

Chuyến đi với Úc là trải nghiệm ngàn năm có một trong cuộc đời của tôi
15. Describe a time when you arrived very early for an appointment. You should
say:
When and where it happened
(When and where it happened) Today, I’d like to share with you about a time that I
arrived very early for an appointment. This occasion occurred some months ago when I
applied for a position at Park Hyatt Hotel and received an interview offer from the
recruitment team. The interview was due to take place at 3 pm on a day in September.
However, I arrived at to the interview venue at around 2 pm, which was 1 hour earlier
than expected.
(Why you arrived early) Everyone was supposed to be at the venue around only 10
minutes prior to the interview time. My presence at 2 pm was too early, which was
attributable to some factors. Firstly, I overestimate the amount of time it took to
commute from my place to the interview venue which was approximately 20 km in
length and took around more than one hour travelling by bus. However, I boarded the
bus for the interview at 12 pm and reached the venue at slightly over 1 pm. I went to the
toilet to make sure I did not look bedraggled or so. Everything was ready as I entered
waiting room at 2 pm. Also, as it was the first interview in my life, I did not want to
create a negative first impression by my late presence.
(What you did while waiting) While waiting, I had butterflies in my stomach so I
decided to listen to some calming music in order to relax a bit. Moreover, it was quite
wise of me to come up with some impressive questions for post-interview Q&A because
they were instrumental in helping me to be selected by the company.
(Explain how you felt about arriving early) I thought that it was not a waste of time to
arrive too early, around 1 hour or so, because by arriving “too early”, I had the chance to
look at myself one more time so that everything looked nice and ready. And by arriving
early, such late presence, which can be a crucial mistake leading to refusal of application,
can be warded off.

16. Describe someone you haven’t met before and you would like to know more.
You should say:
Who this person is
(Who this person is) The passion for cultural exchange and exploration of the world has
developed a habit of writing snail mails to my pen pals as early as I turned 13 years old.
Since then, I have built relationships with an immense number of people from all
around the world. Many as I have got to know, I only maintain contact with a handful of
them. Gabriel, an Italian boy, stands out as the one that I aspire to meet in person once
in my real life.
(How you knew this person) I met him on penpalworld.com, which is a platform for
those sharing the same hobby of communicating with people from other cultural
backgrounds like me. He also is also a big fan of exchanging handwritten letters
regardless of the predominance of technology and the Internet. Therefore, I hit him up
with a message introducing myself and my hobbies, after which some hours I received a
reply from Gabriel. Since then, we have kept in touch by snail mails, from Vietnam to
Italy and backwards.
(What you want to know more about this person) Although having been in touch for
more than 5 years, there are still some things that remain enigmatic to me. For example,
I am yet to know how his daily activities are as well as how an ordinary Italian is
different a Vietnamese one. Despite some conflicts or debates that could have caused a
rift between us, we still get on well with each other and such difference even gives us
more incentives to explore each other more.
(Explain why you would like to know this person more) I would like to know and
meet Gabby, which is what he prefers to be called, in person as he is such a nice and
open person in whom I can confide. For example, whenever I am down in the dumps,
he is someone to whom I can talk to and explain what’s going on. He would stand by me
and always be willing to give me a hand by explaining my problems and find out what’s
wrong before coming up with solutions. That’s also why I aspire to meet him once in my
life.

Part 3:
Establishing a friendship with those who are friendly, of course, sympathetic and
unselfish is one of my biggest dreams. Luckily, I have found some who share those traits
and made friends with them. They have given me the incentive to play to my strengths
in order to succeed and vice versa.
Do you prefer to expand your social circle or be friends with a small groups of
people?
To me, I have shifted focus from quantity to quality. Because as many friends as I
have, if they are not willing to stand by me in most crucial moments of my life, they are
not my friends. And I am highly appreciative of those who are not reluctant to give me a
hand when I face problems.

3. To shift focus from sth to sth (phrase): đổi sự tập trung vào cái gì đó sang cái gì
khác.

the results they deliver.

17. Describe a recent happy event that you had. You should say:
When this happened
What the event was
Who was with you
And explain why you felt happy about it.
(When this happened) Today, I would like to talk about an event in which I found a lot
of happiness. It is actually not an event that other people would think of such as a party
or so, it is an outreach programme in which I had the chance to deliver lessons for the
first time as well as go through what a construction worker had to, albeit to some
extent. I was chosen as one of the Vietnamese volunteers in charge of interpreting as
well as helping the Singaporean students prepare their lessons prior to class. The
programme lasted from 25th November to 5th December.
(What the event was) The event, as aforementioned, was a community service
programme which was carried out in Ben Tre province. Prior to the programme, the
participants held many activities to raise fund which catered for the trip as well as the
school. During the programme, our responsibilities consisted of teaching English,
cooking and constructing.
(Who was with you) The team included more than 30 students from Temasek Junior
College, along with their teachers and 4 other Vietnamese volunteers including me. We
were divided into 4 groups, which would take different responsibilities in rotation.
Everyone was bouncing off the walls waiting for the first day of work. However, as the
programme intensified, some students showed signs of exhaustion but never swerved an
inch from their duty.
(And explain why you felt happy about it) This is the first time I have joined in such
an outreach activity. What turned out was far beyond what I expected. Everyone was so
outgoing and hardworking, especially my teammates. Another reason why this trip
brought a lot of happiness to me is that the students who always asked for our autograph
couldn’t be any more excited about us as our arrival at their classroom always caused a
stir.
1. Deliver a lesson (phrase): giảng bài
You should pay attention to the teacher when she delivers the lesson.
Bạn cần phải tập trung mỗi khi cô giảng bài.
2. Go through (phrase): trải nghiệm/trải qua

18. Describe some encouragement given by other people other people. You should
say:
When and where did this happen
(When and where did this happen) Everyone has to experience ups and downs in their
lives, and I am not an exception. I have fallen down many times. However, the biggest
upset I’ve gone through in my life is being refused my entry clearance by the Home
Office of the U.K. This occurred 2 years ago after I went to great lengths to be selected
for a 6-month volunteer position in Scotland.
(Who gave this encouragement) Fortunately, while everyone else was casting doubts
on my ability, John, a great friend of mine, stood by me and did his best to encourage me
to overcome such a big failure.
(What that person did to you) Hardly had I received the refusal letter when I contacted
John. He was as nervous, as well as disappointed, as I was. After reaching his place, all I
could do was to burst into tears and couldn’t say a word. John, however, was calm as
always and he asked what he could do to help me. I was down in the dumps but he was
so helpful that he bought me milk tea, which was my favourite drink. After the milky tea,
I started to be myself again and explained everything clearly to him. John was all ears
and started giving me solutions and incentives to start a new plan instead of chasing the
European dream.
(Explain how you feel about it) Of course, John’s encouragement was instrumental in
pulling me out of the dumps. I felt so fortunate that I have such a caring and kind friend
as John.

Cô ấy đóng vai trò vô cùng quan trọng trong chiến dịch đổi mới nhà tù.
(Where you would like to go) Travelling is one of my biggest passions which gives me
the incentive to work hard and study hard. The place that I have dreamed of visiting
since I was young is Arashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan. I stumbled upon the bridge when
watching anime and the way that the bridge was demonstrated in the amine was just
impressive. I was intrigued by the massiveness of the bridge, although I had already
known the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
(How you would like to go there) According to the information, there is a dedicated
lane for bicycles on the bridge. And whenever I hear of the name of the bridge, cycling is
always the first one to spring my mind. Being slightly longer than 3 km in length, the
bridge offers such an ideal distance for those who interested in the idea of cycling along
the bridge. Therefore, if I ever have a chance to pay a visit to the Arashi Kaikyo, cycling
will definitely my top choice.
(Who you would like to go with) It will be perfect if someone I love sits behind me on
the bicycle. Of course, isn’t it good to ride someone you love on one of the most
magnificent bridge in the world?
(And explain why you would like to go there by car/motorbike or bike) The bridge is
especially appropriate for those who would like to cycle. Firstly, it is neither too long nor
too short for an ordinary adult to try their hands at exploring the bridge with a bicycle.
Secondly, those who interested in taking photos can just stop wherever they want and
take a snap shot, while car drivers are not allowed to do this.

I’m going to describe a photograph I took myself, from which I derive a lot of pleasure
and remember so well. I have a collection of many photographs in my album, but this one
holds a special meaning. The picture shows the sun was going down while some birds
were flying in the sky. Interestingly, the mighty bright sun took the shape of a large fire
ball and its reddish rays seemed to cover the entire world. The shot of the sunset was in
great harmony with nature, which would help viewers to find their inner peace. The color
tone, the composition and the surrounding environment were so mesmerizing. At that
very moment, the scenery in the picture was a totally different world, which was just like
heaven.
Actually, photography is one of my passions, and I always carry my camera if I have the
chance to set foot in new places and interact with interesting people. As part of my first
experience of travelling alone to a beautiful yet secluded beach in Nha Trang,Viet Nam, I
took this outstanding photo. I took the photo at the very moment of sunset on the beach,
which was actually quite incidental. At first, I intended to take a nice picture of the beach
or the surrounding areas during my stroll, but when I beheld the spectacular view of the
setting sun, I knew I had to capture this precious moment at any cost.
Vocabulary:
The main reason I arrived early was that I wanted my visa interview to be completed as
soon as possible, so that I would be eligible for the trip to America organized for only 2
outstanding university students in my city. To receive this honorable prize, I had to
undergo a lot of procedures and I competed heatedly with distinguished students from
different universities. Obtaining a visa was the last step in my application process, so I
didn’t want to cause any delay. Besides, I had been advised before that the process was
quite nerve-racking, so I wanted to arrive early to prepare myself mentally.
Even though my appointment was at 10am, I left home at 8 o’clock and reached there
within 20 minutes. As I arrived earlier than the scheduled time, I waited outside the office
with other people who were waiting for their own visa interview process. They were also
eagerly waiting for their turn and some of them could not conceal their excitement over
their expected trips and academic plans in America after being issued a visa. For a few
people, this was their third time for visa application, so I received a lot of useful advice on
what to do during the interview.

PART 3:
12. What occasions should people arrive early?
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, there are a lot of occasions that require one’s
punctuality. (Explain your reason or reasons) Most often, people tend to arrive early
when they have an important meeting or sit an exam. In these kinds of situations, people
are under tremendous pressure and they want to make sure they arrive in time to prepare
for unexpected events. (Give an example (often a personal example)) I believe job
interviews are a good example why people arrive early as this not only displays their
professionalism but also good time management skills.
13. Why do people need to be on time?
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, one of the common attributes of all
successful people is that they view their time as a precious resource. (Explain your reason
or reasons) Valuing a friend’s time and earning their respect is an important part of your
individual reputation and it indicates that you can be trusted. (Explain the opposite or
alternative) When you are late for appointments with people who value their time, you
will have wasted one of their most valuable assets and there is a good chance they will
view you as rude, irresponsible and disrespectful.
14. Do you think doing nothing means a waste of time?
(Give a direct answer to the question) No, I don’t. (Explain your reason or reasons)
Apparently, people cannot be active for 24 hours a day. In addition to restful sleep you
need to spend some of your waking hours in a state of unfocused attention. Your mind
needs some rest to recover its focus capacity, and to integrate memory. Daydreaming and
spending time idly often generates new ideas and insights into problems. (Give an
example (often a personal example)) For example, whenever I’m stuck on hard problems,
the answer comes to me when I go for a walk to the park or after meditating.
15. Do you think it is important to be punctual?
(Give a direct answer to the question) Of course, it certainly is. (Explain your reason or
reasons) In addition to what I explained in the previous question, I believe being punctual
builds up your self-confidence. Most importantly, the commitment to being on time
indicates your levels of discipline. The punctual man shows that he can organize his time,
that he pays attention to detail, and that he can set aside pleasure to take care of business.
(Explain the opposite or alternative) Conversely, people assume that if the chronically
late person can’t even consider the possibility of a little extra traffic, he won’t be able to
consider other obstacles that might stand in the way of getting a project or task done.

I’m going to talk about an occasion on which I got to see an ambush of tigers. I went to
a safari last month and there I got a chance to see many wild animals like a lion, a tiger,
hippopotamus, sloth bears, wolves, jackals and wild boar in close proximity for the very
first time. I was intimidated yet immediately amazed to see many tigers and became aware
of many hidden facts about this animal.
It was last summer when my whole family had a trip to Thailand, and we decided to visit
the country’s renowned Safari World, a tourist attraction in Bangkok. It was established
in 1988 with a total area of 480 acres (190 ha) for its open zoo and 180 acres (73 ha) for
its bird park. The scenery there is fantastic and driving through this park searching for
tigers is truly a great experience. This striped predator blends effortlessly into the forest
undergrowth, making it even more of a thrill when you eventually spot one.

(Who this person is)
A few weeks ago, I surprisingly bumped into one of my high school friends, Quang, who
I had not heard from for years. It was a Saturday evening, I was jogging on my way home
from the park. It is a part of my routine to go for a stroll to recharge myself after a
demanding day’s work. Quang called my name and I was completely shocked because I
had never expected to see him again after hearing the news about him studying abroard in
the U.S.
He told me that he came back to Vietnam for the summer holidays. We decided to go to a
nearby cafe so that we could talk longer and share some updates with each other. Quang
told me that he picked information technology as his major in college because he thought
it would benefit his career prospects with higher chances of an internship or enviable
salary in the U.S. He was quite overwhelmed with such a different culture initially, yet
adapted to it over time. Actually, I was a little bit surprised that he went against his parents’
wishes to study abroad, as his mom always expected him to be a dedicated doctor. At the
same time, I shared some of my university stories with him, so that he could understand
better about the normal life of a Vietnamese student.
(And explain why you would like to know more about this person)
I really would like to know more about him and his changes over the course of 3 years in
such an advanced environment as the US. Unlike his reserved image in the past, Quang
tended to exude more confidence. He realized that discovering more about the cultures
and customs of different nations has given him a fresh perspective of the world. His
studying tips and hands-on experience were also informative and applicable. Even though
we may have changed during the time we did not meet, I could still feel the attachment
and respect between us.

Answer:
I will tell you about the paddy or rice plant, which is one of the main agricultural plants
in our country. Ever since I was in elementary school, the rice plant has appeared in
many aspects of my life. (What the plant is)
The farmers of our country cultivate it, and it is grown in most places in Vietnam. The
rice plant can be spotted all across the countryside around Vietnam. If you go to the
countryside when the paddy is in season, you will find this plant dancing with the wind.
The paddy plant is a thin, medium side plant, and its leaves and body are green. Usually,
the rice seed is green at the beginning and becomes yellow when it is ripe. It takes up to
6 month to grow a rice plant from seeds to mature plants, depending on the variety and
environmental conditions. The ideal environment for rice is in fertile land with a good
supply of water and sunlight. (Where and how it is grown)
It is undoubtable that Vietnamese people are still dependent on the cultivation of rice to
earn their living. In fact, Vietnam has become one of the forerunners in exporting rice,
which is proof of its relevance to my country. Rice plays an indispensable role in our
daily meals, and children get used to eating rice from an early age. If there were no rice
in a meal, the old generation would feel like a fish out of water.
Over thousands of years, the rice plant has played a really important role in Vietnamese
culture, and many traditions and ceremonies originate from farmers’ hopes for an
abundant crop. I think that the rice plant symbolizes the perseverant, hard-working
personalities of Vietnamese people. (Why you like or dislike it and explain why it is
important to your country).
VOCABULARY HIGHLIGHTS:
4. The cultivation of rice (expression): Qúa trình phát triển và trồng gạo.
VD: You should get used to waking up early or you’ll miss the bus.
9. A fish out of water (idiom): Cảm thấy lạ lẫm, không thoải mái.
PẢRT 3:
(Who you helped) Ignoring someone who is in need of help is considered as the height
of bad manners, I believe. Therefore, I try to give others a hand whenever I can.
Helping my classmate to improve his English proficiency has been one of the most
successful and meaningful achievements I’ve ever had in my life. My classmate, John,
struggled with every single English test due to his low language command. It can be
said that John’s exposure to English was too little for him to have the chance to practice
his skills, the reason for which was probably his financial background. I was assigned to
take the responsibility of tutoring him by the teacher.
(How you helped them) John and I went to a café each weekend in order to review all
the knowledge acquired during the whole week. John offered to treat me but as I could
recognise his suffering from hardship, we reached a consensus on this and agreed that
we would take turns to treat each other. During week days, we would go to the park
where a great number of foreigners jogged so that John could have the chance to practice
his listening and speaking skills, as well as to expand his vocabulary. At weekends, as
aforementioned, we would review the phrases he had learned throughout the whole week
so that they would be imprinted on his memory clearly and always be ready for use.
(Why you helped them) I love helping others. That’s the first reason. Another reason is
that English has been of great significance to me, so I believe that if John can develop a
strong command of English, he will open up a new chapter in his life.
(And explain how this person benefited from your help) And finally, my belief has
turned out to be true, at least in the case of John. He emerged as one of the best
performers in class, which resulted in the fact that he was chosen for the provincial
examination as one of the best English learners. Also, he was able to get a job in this
field, which ensured his quality of life and improved his living standards as he was able
to feed himself at the age of 17.

26. Describe one time when someone said good words about what you did. You
should say:
- When this happened
(What you did) During our first teaching sessions, my teammates struggled to manage
their time, which resulted in the fact that they were not able to transmit all the
knowledge and information they’d prepared in advance. So what I did was draw a
countdown timer and suggest sketching out a brief timeline so that my timer and their
timeline helped them to manage time wisely. Moreover, I also received recognition from
Mr. Foo, one of the Singaporean teachers in the team, for my ability to keep the
rambunctious children who easily got overexcited under control.
(What this person said) He said that he was stunned by my ability to organise the
children as even he, with more than 10 years’ experience of being a teacher, struggled to
keep them under control. He believed that I had the potential for becoming a teacher
in the future also, which made everyone burst into laughter.
(And explain how you felt about it) After listening to his praise, I was on top of the
world. This was the first time that someone praised me in a serious way and apparently
in a serious occasion that no one could be facetious, so it was quite meaningful to me.
Also, I felt encouraged. His affirmation was an incentive for me to try harder in the
following days when the programme started to intensify.

What is it?
Today, I’d like to tell you about one of the most interesting paintings that I have ever
seen in my entire life, the Mona-Lisa, which was painted by an Italian artist-Leonardo da
Vinci. This masterpiece was recognized as the most known and most praised painting in
the world.
There is a woman sitting markedly upright in an armchair with her arms folded to depict
Lisa as a virtuous woman and faithful wife. The painting was one of the first portraits to
depict the sitter in front of an imaginary landscape, and Leonardo was said to be of the
first painters to use the toughest drawing technique of all the time. The painting is so
famous that there are so many hypotheses about it.
What I find attractive the most about this painting is Mona Lisa’s charming smile. It is
not only the most beautiful feature on her face but also holds lots of mysteries. It is
widely believed that her smile looks different from different angles and there have been
many highly debatable arguments and speculation over the years. I personally think
Mona Lisa is truly an impressive painting; after all it was painted by the great Leonardo
Da Vinci.
VOCABULARY HIGHLIGHTS:
3. Can’t help doing something (phrase): Không thể ngừng làm gì đó.
Yes, I have had a passion for art since I was a little child. I still remember joining an art
class after school and being taught by really awesome teachers. Until now, I still draw in
my free time, but not as often as I used to do. If there were no arts, life would be dull.
Of course. I do believe that art classes allow people, especially children who are at
formative age, to be creative and think outside the box.
Art is very crucial for the development of a child. It helps children in learning a
language. It is through the colors and shapes, action that they learn activities.
Well, I think that Vietnamese people are in favor of Realism and Romanticism, which
convey emotions and easily touch the heart of audiences.
First of all, painting helps people recognize colors not only of art but also life. Besides, it
is also a hobby which helps painters escape from daily stress. For example, I usually go
to art classes on the weekends to let off some steam.
Do you think people’s preferences for arts have changed in past few years?
To be honest, there have been many significant changes in people’s preferences for arts.
This is due to the fact that people usually link the arts to real life. For example, people
used to draw the art of poverty, however; they often draw about social problems such as
pollution or urbanization these days.

District 10, the market is really famous for its diversity in flowers.
When going to this market, you can see the whole street is filled with different florist
shops and kinds of flowers. In addition, you can feel the sense that sellers and merchants
are bargaining with each other, whereas other people are trying to choose for themselves
the most beautiful flowers. Besides, you can easily catch many girls in Vietnamese
traditional dress, Ao dai, taking pictures in front of the stores.

29. Describe a person who helps to protect the environment
One of the most inspiring Millennials to me was Ms. Trang Nguyen, who has been an
active campaigner for environmental issues, particularly wildlife conservation. I first
found out about her via her viral photo album called “100 little things I do for Earth in
100 days”, which showcased easy-to-follow habits for to help to preserve the
environment. The album has raised public awareness about the impacts of our everyday
decisions on the environment, and empowered Vietnamese young people to pursue a
greener lifestyle.
Trang has chosen to practice environmental protection via research, which involves long
field trips to tropical forests or natural conservation areas. As a result, she has conducted
multiple wildlife projects in many parts of the world, including South Africa, Cambodia
and Vietnam. Furthermore, she also acts as an ambassador for the United for Wildlife
Fund of the British Royal Family. In addition, all the proceeds from her newly published
book “Back to the Wild” have been donated to wildlife protection campaigns in
Vietnam.
I think Trang is admirable because she dares to realize her dream despite incredible
hardship. Her determination and courage have taught me that my actions matter, and I
am inspired to keep learning and contributing to a better world.
Millennials: a person who was born in the 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s:
The guidelines are an important tool for raising awareness about the environment.
pursue a greener lifestyle: follow a greener lifestyle
I decided to pursue a greener lifestyle after learning about the impacts of everyday
actions on the environment.
She was an ambassador for our company because she was really caring.
Proceeds: the amount of money received from a particular event or activity or when
something is sold:
a myriad of choices
PART 3:
Definitely yes. Preserving the environment is of great importance because it ensures the
growth of future generations. Therefore, I think it should be incorporated in all school
curriculums. In addition, students spend a great deal of time at school. This gives
teachers various chances to raise their students’ awareness of environmental issues.
There are multiple ways by which we can better protect our environment. Firstly, we can
adopt a green lifestyle by using environmentally friendly products to reduce toxic waste
accumulation. In addition, wildlife is greatly endangered due to illegal hunting. For
example, numerous rhinos have been killed for their horns because of a false belief that
they can cure diseases. This problem can be tackled through education and speaking up
to prevent such actions.
In order to pursue sustainable development goals, we must educate students about the
environment. This helps raise young people’s awareness of worldwide issues that affect
humankind, such as global warming or ecological imbalance. When the connection
between human actions and the environment are well understood, students will become
more mindful in their everyday decisions. For example, they will consume more green
products or promote a green lifestyle. This not only contributes to a cleaner environment
but also eventually benefits our society and the future generations’ wellbeing.
Do you think it is necessary to make environmental protection as a subject?
(what it is) Reading books has been a hobby since I was in grade 7, and since then, the
I’ve read 70-plus books. The last book I read was My Promised Land: The Triumph and
Tragedy of Israel by Ari Shavit. Many literary critics have complimented the book on
its enormous amount of information about the history of modern Israel from its very first
days.
(who wrote the book) The author of this book, Ari Shavit, is a journalist and a writer
based in Israel. Another notable book of his is On Gaza Beach. Shavit was born
in Rehovot, Israel, and his father was a scientist and his mother was an artist. Some of
his ancestors were early leading Zionists, and he provides in-depth information about
them in the book.
(what the book is about) In accordance with the title, the book is mainly about Israel’s
history. Shavit covers the activities of Theodor Herzl, a Jewish journalist who gave birth
to Zionism, and how he and other Zionists, including Shavit’s ancestors, instigated
campaigns to re-establish the Land of Israel. This was a national movement of the Jewish
people to re-establish a Jewish homeland in the historic territory of the Land of Israel.
(and explain how you felt about it) I agree with critics who say that there is an enormous
amount of information in the book. In fact, it took me more than 3 weeks to finish the
book, as it was too long and made me rack my brain at some points to compare what I’d
read with other information I’d previously read. The book gave me a chance to broaden
my knowledge about Israel, its history, and its citizens.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Of course, not only parents but everybody should
maintain reading habits (Explain your reason or reasons) Parents as adults read to keep
themselves updated and accumulate knowledge, thus being a role model for their kids
(Give an example (often a personal example)) For example, a mother who read books
on a daily basis would probably nurture the love for books in her daughter. (Explain the
opposite or alternative) Understandably, an enormous workload may sometimes deter
adults’ enthusiasm for such a time-demanding activity like reading books.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, I would say paper books, without
hesitation (Explain your reason or reasons) To me, the satisfaction derived from
finishing the last page of a book is much more rewarding. (Explain the opposite or
alternative) Sometimes, I would read online books to save money, but as a last resort.
The sheer feeling of having a new book and adding it to your own bookshelf is
irreplaceable for genuine book lovers.
(Give a direct answer to the question) I believe the prospect of books disappearing is
very unlikely (Explain your reason or reasons) E-books are getting more popular each
year but they will never replace regular books completely. Some people will always want
to hold and have a physical book that they can read through and share with others.
(Explain the opposite or alternative) Possibly, some forms of digital media will supplant
books as a delivery method for information and eventually the printing and publishing of
hardbound books will be a niche industry.
(Give a direct answer to the question) As kids begin to read books on their own, they
will develop a preference for stories of different genres. Many children like to read
books involving adventure, mystery or fantasy. Many tweens and teens also enjoy
realistic fiction, that is stories where the protagonist must deal with hard issues, such as
divorce and peer pressure. (Explain the opposite or alternative) Older children may also
enjoy reading informative books about different animals, vehicles or sports that interest
them.

(What it was) I’ve found the TV program Mr. Bean funny. Albeit set in the UK, the
sitcom expanded to reach other countries, including Vietnam, my home country. The
drama series went viral in Vietnam in the early 2010s when dozens of people watched
and imitated Mr. Bean’s oafish behaviour.
(How often you watched it) The series was aired every Sunday afternoon on the Disney
channel, and I don’t think I missed a single episode.
(What it was about) The central plot revolves around Mr. Bean, a neurotic Brit. Each
episode of Mr. Bean tells a totally different story, unlike a normal drama series that uses
one main story that gives birth to many other smaller and less important ones. Based on a
character originally developed by Atkinson while he was studying for his master's degree
at Oxford University, the series follows the exploits of Mr. Bean, described by Atkinson
as "a child in a grown man's body," in solving problems presented by everyday tasks, and
often causing disruption in the process.
(And explain why it could make you laugh) The awkward and crazy behavior of Mr.
Bean makes me laugh. In one episodes that split my sides, Mr. Bean designed an oafish
hairstyle for a kid when the hairdresser was away. It was even more hilarious when the
kid’s mom went back to complain, and Mr. Bean hid in a corner. Mr. Bean is one of my
favorite sitcoms so far. I still sometimes watch it to relieve stress.

oafish clothes and hair.

Những bản tấu hài của bạn sẽ hoàn hảo cho buổi tối hôm nay. Bạn sẽ làm mọi người
cười bể bụng.
PART 3: ADULTS-CHILDREN
(Give a direct answer to the question) Honestly, I don’t think so. (Explain your reason
or reasons) Given the enormous social and domestic responsibilities most adults have to
shoulder, it would be hard for them to be as joyful and carefree as children. (Give an
example (often a personal example)) While young adults concern themselves with
career prospects, the need to balance between different relationships exhausts the
middle-aged. (Explain the opposite or alternative) Yet, irrespective of age, one’s
cheerful disposition largely depends on his or her attitude to life.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, this answer may vary from person to
person, even for those in the same age group. (Give an example) I guess the majority
would take pleasure from hanging out with friends or immersing themselves in hobbies
and entertaining activities. (Explain the opposite or alternative) Some, in the meantime,
associate their happiness with materialistic and career-related goals, so they may work to
be happy.
(Give a direct answer to the question) As I have put it, for kids, laughter is the most
spontaneous means of emotional expression (Explain your reason or reasons) The
younger people are, the more easily they laugh, as there is always a joyful element in the
eyes of innocent minds. (Explain the opposite or alternative) Besides, a child may view
laughter as a way to integrate into social groups.

Tham khảo bài: “ Describe an interesting subject that you learned at school”
It may sound unbelievable, but of all the subjects I learned at school, I was really into
Math. My friends and the general public nowadays may tend to complain that Math
covers too much ground and is too difficult, but my love for Math remains unchanged.
The person who played the biggest role in inspiring me to study Math was my teacher in
my second year at school. She always tried to integrate interactive learning into our
lessons and involve us in lots of exciting activities. Also, we were never bombarded
with too many new things, and our teacher never failed to explain to us again the points
that we found difficult to understand. This helped us to have a good grasp of everything
we were taught.
(How long you studied this subject)
To be honest, I did not always like this subject. I started learning it when I was very
small, at the age of five maybe. At that time, I found the mathematical formulas out of
my depth and extremely hard to memorize. However, as time went by, I gradually
managed to understand them all and started to be interested in this subject.
The main reason why Math was fascinating to me is that this subject was logical and
easy to study. Whenever I had to sit an exam, I only had to memorize the formula and
know how to apply it in order to solve problems. Meanwhile, getting good grades in art
or literature tests required great talent, skills and background knowledge. Therefore, I
found it much easier to make the grade in Math compared with other subjects. So,
because I was always a high-flyer in Math, I guess I always found it more interesting
than subjects in which I was only an average student in the class.
Vocabulary:
Ví dụ: Bài giảng lịch sử hôm nay sử dụng rất nhiều tài liệu.
2. interactive learning
Meaning: refers to a method of teaching and learning in which teachers ask questions in
class, assign and check homework, or hold class or group discussions.
Example: With or without the aid of technology, interactive learning helps students
strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Ví dụ: Dù có hay không sự hỗ trợ của công nghệ, hình thức học tương tác giúp học sinh
cải thiện khả năng giải quyết vấn đề và tăng tư duy phản biện.
Example: Every day it seems as if we are bombarded with e-mail messages warning of
computer viruses.
Ví dụ: Ngày nào chúng tôi cũng như thể bị khủng bố bằng những tin nhắn qua email về
việc cảnh báo có virus máy tính.
Example: Children who begin to learn a foreign language in primary school are usually
able to have a good grasp of the new language quickly.
Ví dụ: Trẻ em mới bắt đầu học ngoại ngữ tại trường tiểu học thường sẽ nắm bắt được
ngôn ngữ mới rất nhanh chóng.
Example: Streaming in schools enables pupils to study at the level which is appropriate
for them, and therefore students rarely find themselves out of their depth.
Ví dụ: Phân lớp tại trường học cho phép học sinh học ở trình độ phù hợp với mình, và ít
khi bị rơi vào tình trạng vượt quá khả năng nhận thức.
6. to sit an exam
Ví dụ: Một số sinh viên khẳng định rằng họ cảm thấy có động lực học hơn khi họ cần
tham gia kì thi vào cuối kì.
Example: Nobody can succeed in their studies if they rely on luck rather than hard work
to make the grade.
Ví dụ: Không ai có thể thành công trong việc học nếu họ chỉ dựa vào vận may chứ không
chăm chỉ cố gắng để đạt được kết quả.
8. a high-flyer
Meaning: someone who has the desire and ability to be very successful in their studies
Example: The problem with our teacher is that she explains things too quickly for most
of the students and she pays most attention only to the academic high-flyers in the class.
Ví dụ: Vấn đề của cô giáo chúng tôi là cô ấy giảng bài quá nhanh và chỉ quan tâm tới
những học sinh ham học trong lớp.
Vocabulary:
Eg: My friend is really into video games – he plays them for hours every day.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Of course yes, and reality has proved so.
(Explain your reason or reasons) Men certainly have superior physical strength, which
may come in handy when chasing bad guys. In the meantime, women are often better at
seeking cooperation, which is essential to police work (Give an example (often a
personal example)) For example, people are often taciturn before a burly policeman
because they feel insecure and fear they might get into trouble. On the contrary, the
presence of a policewoman often reassures them and puts them at ease. Therefore, a
police force consisting of both male and female officers can best serve the public.
(Give a direct answer to the question) In my opinion, potential future police officers are
men and women who truly want to protect people from the ills of our society. (Explain
your reason or reasons) Besides being physically fit for the job and psychologically apt
for it, these people also are willing to take on the violence encountered unexpectedly on
the street, and the enormous dangers when undertaking missions. (Give an example
(often a personal example)) It may be a life-and-death situation involving pulling a
victim out of a crashed car or providing first aid and basic life support to a shooting
victim before paramedics arrive.
(Give a direct answer to the question) No, I don’t think so (Explain your reason or
reasons) With regards to their contributions and sacrifices to society, their salary is
immensely rewarding. (Give an example (often a personal example)). Being a
policeman/woman can be very demanding, and their job takes a lot of bravery. (Explain
the opposite or alternative) It just does not make sense that professional sportsmen are
paid millions to entertain us, but, police officers get paid considerably less to maintain
the law in society, to keep us safe from harmful situations and to possibly give up their
life for it.
(Give a direct answer to the question) In my opinion, it is not, although being a police
officer also calls for one’s empathy and compassion towards people (Explain the
opposite or alternative) To become a good police officer, one has to meet a lot of
requirements: physical & mental fitness, agility, communication skills etc. Among those,
personally I feel, integrity is a fundamental trait required for police work and quite
possibly the most important.
Vocabulary:
superior [adj]: better than average or better than other people or things of the same type:
vượt trội
Eg: She was chosen for the job because she was the superior candidate.
law-abiding [adj]: obeying and respecting the law: tuân thủ luật pháp
go to any great lengths [expression]: to try very hard to achieve something: cố gắng hết
sức, làm đủ mọi cách
Eg: We went to great lengths to make sure the votes were counted correctly.

someone else: sự hi sinh
Eg: We had to make sacrifices in order to pay for our children's education.

Eg: Despite living in different states, the two families have maintained a close friendship.
compassion [n]: a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for the suffering or bad luck of
others and a wish to help them: sự đồng cảm
agility [n]: the ability to move about quickly and easily: sự nhanh nhẹn
integrity [n]: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you
refuse to change: sự chính trực
Eg: No one doubted that the president was a man of the highest integrity.
(what it is) When I was young, I was fascinated whenever I came across a street pianist.
I was passionate about music, especially the piano. Luckily, I had the chance to have
lessons with a classically trained pianist, who was willing to teach me for free because
there was a shortage of pianists for the church’s choir. I did not hesitate to take him up
on his offer.
(where you can learn it) Because I was trained to play the piano for the choir at my
church, and because I did not have an instrument at home, I had lessons at the church.
Even though churches are supposed to be quiet and solemn, I still really enjoyed my
lessons. All the sessions were full of laughter because there were other people who also
tried to play the piano with me.
(how you learn it) Filled with excitement, I could not wait to play my first notes on the
piano. However, things did not go as expected! I started to realise that the piano was a lot
harder than I had thought. I knew that I would improve the more I played, so I carried on,
but I was particularly challenged by classical pieces. I found them difficult even when I
felt that I had become a competent player! I thought about giving up, but luckily, my
teacher made a lot of efforts to inspire me. I quickly got rid of my negative thoughts and
got back on track.
(how long it takes to learn it) I have been learning the piano for more than 10 years, but
it only took me around 1 year to learn to play confidently and smoothly for the services.
Nowadays, I play simple pieces for the church services, but I also learn new, challenging
classical pieces so that I can continue to develop my skills.
PART 3:
1. Why are some people unwilling to learn new skills?
An immense number of people are reluctant to learn new skills due to 2 main reasons.
First, these people might have struggled or even failed to learn a new skill, which is a big
barrier to giving another try. Second, many would like to be competent at one skill.
However, to this end, they believe it is going to take lots of time and money so they tend
to give up in the first place.
Cô ấy quá say mê với cuốn sách mà quên luôn mấy cái bánh đang nước trong lò.
8. To pay off = to pay dividends (phrase): mang lại kết quả tốt.
Example: All her hard work paid off in the end, and she finally passed the exam.
PART 3:
1. What are the differences between getting information from libraries and from
newspapers?
From a practical perspective, the access to information in libraries and in newspapers is
not much different from each other as information is all paper-based and must undergo a
thorough examination before being published. However, information included in
newspapers covers a wider range of readers and news while information in libraries aims
at a smaller scale of readers and provides in-depth knowledge rather than news.
2. In what ways can people get information these days?
As we are in the prime of the Information Technology age, there are numerous means of
getting access to information. For example, one can read newspapers on sites like the
propaganda of Singapore: The Straits Times. If one prefers in-depth knowledge, The
Economist will be an ideal choice. Apart from online newspapers, social networking
sites have also proved influential in providing information from more various
perspectives. One can also rely on books to acquire information.
1. To undergo an examination (phrase): được kiểm chứng.
Example: The evidence is still undergoing examination.
Bằng chứng vẫn đang được kiểm chứng lại.
2. In-depth (adj): sâu.
Example: an in-depth report/interview/analysis
Một cuộc báo cáo/phỏng vấn/phân tích sâu.

Example: Middle age can be the prime of life if you have the right attitude.
Độ tuổi trung tuần có thể là thời kì phát triển nhất của bạn nếu bạn có thái
độ tốt.
4. Propaganda (n): cơ quan tuyên truyền.
Example: At school we were fed ring-wing propaganda.
Ở trường, chúng tôi luôn bị nhồi nhét với sự tuyên truyền về cánh tả.
5. To prove influential (phrase): có hiệu quả/ảnh hưởng.
Example: He has managed to prove influential in Washington for a quarter
of a century.
Ông ấy cố gắng gây ảnh hưởng ở Washington đã hơn ¼ thế kỉ.
(how you know about it) I stumbled across AirBnB, an app that supports
homestays, some months ago, after seeing one of their thousands of
marketing posts on Facebook and Instagram. AirBnB offers lots of deals
for both customers and homeowners, which is why many people think it is
as an ideal alternative to traditional hotels, which often cost customers an
arm and a leg.
(who the customers of this family business are) Apparently, tourists make up the main
part of AirBnB’s customer base. On my last journey to Bali, Indonesia, my group of 6
hired a big villa on AirBnB for only 50 dollars per day. Also, expats use it to look for
and hire a room which is on lease.
PART 3:
1. Do you think globalisation is a positive development?
From the perspective of economics, education and tourism, globalisation is apparently a
positive development. It is instrumental in boosting free trading among countries as
well as foreign investments into a developing country. From the perspective of cultures,
this may be a negative development because it is believed to cause a corrosion of
culture.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of family business?
Regarding the pros, families which run their own business receive the whole profit they
make before tax. Also, the freedom is also another advantage that those running family
business have. However, doing business on our own seems a bit risky as the likelihood of
family business going bankrupt is higher than that of prestigious firms.
3. Do people in your country like to work for big companies or small ones?
We believe that the bigger the companies, the more prestigious they are. As a result,
many people are attracted by the prestige of working for a top companies, especially
multinational ones like the British Council or Unilever, and work for them in order to
have higher salaries.
1. Instrumental in (adj): có sức ảnh hưởng
Example: She was instrumental in bringing about the prison reform act.

Example: These alloys protect against corrosion.
Những hợp chất này được sử dụng để tránh sự ăn mòn.
3. To go bankrupt (phrase): bị phá sản.
Example: He went bankrupt after only a year in business.
Anh ấy bị phá sản chỉ sau một năm lập nghiệp.
4. Prestigious (adj): uy tín.
Example: a prestigious university
Một đại học danh tiếng
Three months ago, I attended a seminar organized by my university. The purpose of the
seminar was to present and discuss the job opportunities for undergraduate students in
Vietnam. At first, I hadn’t planned on attending the seminar but on second thoughts, I
decided to go with a friend of mine since I believed that the talk would offer me some
constructive advice on my future career plan. The keynote speaker was a representative of
an educational agency which places strong emphasis on helping students accumulate real
working experience after university graduation. Before delivering the speech, the speaker
forged the bonds between the students in the auditorium by organizing some warm-up
games, which I consider a good approach to capture the attention of the audience and
lighten the atmosphere. He then analyzed a great number of qualities an employer expects
from applicants and he went on to demonstrate the ways to impress employers in an
interview, thus enabling us to have a thorough preparation for our careers later on.
Besides, he also presented some information about long-term career opportunities in
Vietnam and discussed the highly skilled jobs for which there is a shortage of workers.
Throughout the speech, what most impressed me was his endless patience and dedication
to delivering the information and helping the audience understand every single matter
clearly. He was always willing to answer any question asked by the students no matter
how minor the problems might be. This is one of the most significant qualities of a speaker
that he clearly possesses. In brief, I found the speech very informative and useful as it
answered a great number of questions I had at the back of my mind.

Part 3
1. How to achieve public speaking skills.
There’re several ways to achieve public speaking skills, in my opinion. First, you need to
prepare the content of your speech, which I think needs to be clear enough for the
audiences to understand. Second, you need to practice over and over again, so as to make
sure you won’t make any stupid mistakes once you start delivering your speech. Most
people are afraid of speaking in public because they are worried they will be judged by
their mistakes, so intense practice should guarantee them a better performance.
Vocabulary:
concise [adjective] (súc tích) short and clear, expressing what needs to be said without
unnecessary words
e.g. You need to make your answers clear and concise, do not make them too long.
cohesive devices [noun phrase] (từ nối) useful English language conjunctions,
transitional phrases, synonyms and pronouns that link ideas in a cohesive manner.
e.g. This piece of writing lacks cohesive devices, which is why it is so confusing.
ramble [verb] (nói lan man) to talk or write in a confused way, often for a long time
e.g. Sorry, I’m rambling – let me get back to the point.
come in handy [expression] (có ích) to be useful
e.g. This money will come in handy when we go on vacation.
stumble [verb] (nói vấp) Make a mistake or repeated mistakes in speaking
e.g. She stumbled over her words because she was so nervous that she found it difficult to
pronounce even simple words that she knew well.
seemingly [adverb] (tưởng chừng ) Appearing to be real or true, but not necessarily
being so
e.g. It was a seemingly impossible task, but in the film he managed to escape and save the
world.
hostile [adjective] (hằn học, thù địch) very unfriendly and ready to argue or fight
e.g. When he was attacked by hostile gangsters, Jackie Chan used his Kung Fu skills.
daunting [adjective] (làm nản chí, làm thoái chí) making somebody feel nervous and
less confident
e.g. She had the daunting task of caring for seriously ill patients.
add fuel to the fire/flames [idiom] (xát muối vào vết thương) Cause a situation or
conflict to become more intense.
e.g. The situation between the US and Russia was already tense, but the violent speech by
the President added fuel to the flames.
(What the game is) My childhood imprinted my memory with so much to remember.
However, what makes me miss my childhood most is the fashion game that my cousin,
her friends and I took part in every weekend. Well, we transformed my cousin’s house
into a stage with a curtain and a red carpet, seemingly in vain as the stage turned out a
mess all the time. Also, it was sheets and blankets that were an ideal alternative to
glowing evening gowns.
(When you played it) We held a “fashion show” most Sundays after church and
breakfast. During my childhood, a fashion show organized by Aquafina was aired every
Sunday on TV, which was a source of inspiration and incentives for us to hold a model
show. Also, the fashion shows resulted, more than anything, from the fact that we were
all obsessed with decorating and designing clothes for our dolls.
(Who you played with) As I’ve mentioned previously, I played the game with my
cousins and her friends. We changed our roles each show, with one being the first face to
turn up and another one being the vedette who would bring the show to a close. These
two persons played the most important roles in the show, and apparently, they would be
the most resplendent ones.
(How you feel about the game) Until nowEven today, I sometimes think about the
shows that we held in the past, and whenever the shows spring my mind, I just split my
sides. I feel that I was born in the most beautiful time as we still had to struggle to get
by, to some extent, and rack our brain to find a way to entertain ourselves, which made
our games even more meaningful. Mean while, most children nowadays who keep their
eyes glued to smartphone screens all the time.
Example: The period of time that I did volunteer work in Africa imprinted me with a
lot to remember.
Khoảng thời gian tôi làm tình nguyện ở Châu Phi làm cho tôi nhớ về nó rất nhiều.
Tôi rất cố gắng để bắt đầu câu chuyện nhưng không thể.
Example: The interview with the president will air tomorrow morning.
Cuộc phỏng vấn với tổng thống sẽ được phát sóng vào sáng mai.
Tôi thấy Anna ở phía cuối phòng, cô ấy rực rỡ trong chiếc đầm màu đỏ.
Example:
Your jokes are perfect for your speech tonight. You'll have them splitting their sides!
Những bản tấu hài của bạn sẽ hoàn hảo cho buổi tối hôm nay. Bạn sẽ làm mọi người
cười bể bụng.
When it happened
(When it happened) As a student who lives far away from home, I am left with no
choice but staying with others in the university’s dorm. However, at first, it was not easy
for me to get on well with my roommates as I am quite obsessed with hygiene, while
others are quite messy. As I was the youngest person in the room, others kept
patronising me and made me do all the household chores. Hardly had I found myself
being mentally and physically bullied for only a short time before when I started to find
my voice. This happened exactly one year ago.
(Who you complained to) It was one of my roommates who was a senior of the
University of Science that condescended to me as well as lazy the most yet was the
laziest among us all. He was a couch potato who could spend a whole day keeping his
eyes glued to a screen to play games and never got rid of his wastegarbage, which caused
the room to be so untidy and made me raise my voice.
(What you complained about) Hardly had II had just caught him littering inside the
room in broad daylight when I started to complain. Respectfully, I told him that, while
others strived to keep the room clean as we did not have much time to clean the room
every single day, he made all our efforts go to waste. Also, another roommate accused
him of using his personal stuff without permission.
(Why you were satisfied with the result) On hearing our complaints, he gave us an
apology and promised to change himself and give others a hand with household chores.
At first, I doubted his words, so but it came as a surprise that he shut down his laptop,
picked up the broom and promptly swept the floor promptly. Since then, he has tried to
stick to the cleaning schedule that we set outup on our first days of staying with each
other.
Example: Poor standards of hygiene mean that the disease spreads fast.
Example: Witnesses often find their voices when they hear a reward has been offered.
Example: So much effort and talent will go to waste if we are forced to drop the film.
Rất nhiều cố gắng và tài năng sẽ bị mất nếu chúng ta bị buộc phải bỏ cuốn phim.
7. To come as a/no surprise (idiom): gây bất ngờ/không gây bớt ngờ.
If you didn't study for that test at all, your failing grade should come as no surprise.
Nếu bạn không học bài, thì việc thi rớt sẽ không bất ngờ xíu nào.
- What it is
(What it is)
I’ve always been eager to learn French. It is spoken as a first language in France; the
Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick; and other francophone
regions like Belgium, western Switzerland, Monaco, parts of the United States, and
various communities elsewhere. French has a long history as an international language of
literature and science and is a primary language for many international organizations
including the United Nations, the European Union, and NATO.
(How you would learn it and where you would learn it)
I would take a 6-month language course at a local university, which would hopefully
give me a good grip on the basics of the language. After that, I will take advantage of
online resources to further enhance my skills. Besides, I will hopefully also find some
friends from the language course who could help me to practice the language even after
the course is over. These are my plans to master the language, but I am sure that over the
course of time, I will be able to devise more intuitive ways of becoming proficient at
the language as well.
PART 3: LANGUAGE
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, there are different challenges for different
people and for different languages. (Explain your reason or reasons) For the language
itself, grammar may baffle many learners, while others can’s pick up the pronunciation
and struggle to memorize vocabulary. (Give an example (often a personal example))
For example, there are languages with totally different phonologies, and people who are
not used to tones will even lose heart. Alphabets can be challenging, especially the
complicated ones like Kanji or Tibetan. (Explain the opposite or alternative) Besides,
other obstacles like the lack of time and resources generally present themselves during
the learning process.
(Give a direct answer to the question) There are many approaches and methods for
people of different levels (Explain your reason or reasons) Beginner learners should
decide on a simple, attainable goal to start with so that you don’t feel overwhelmed,
like picking up 50 words of a language and start using them on people on a daily basis.
After then, learners should dive deeper into effective methods and materials, which suit
their linguistic ability and learning styles. (Explain the opposite or alternative)
Personally, learning a language also requires one to immerse himself in the language and
apply it in real life to get the best results.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, the answer varies from person to person.
(Explain your reason or reasons) For me, the best way is repetition. Starting with basic
sentences and grammar would be a good base. Afterwards, try to expose yourself to the
language according to your hobbies and interests. (Give an example (often a personal
example)) Watching movies with subtitles, reading books on your favorite topics or
listening to music are classic examples. In my case, I’m interested in history and my
favorite show is Friends, so I searched for a Spanish podcast and am currently watching
season 5 with Spanish subtitles.

irrespective of [expression]: without considering; not needing to allow for: không màng
đến, không kể đến
Eg: The rules apply to everyone, irrespective of how long they have been with the
company.
Eg: All diplomatic attempts at a peaceful solution to the crisis have been fruitless.
consideration [n]: a particular subject or fact that needs to be thought about when
judging something: xự xem xét
Eg: There are serious considerations to make, and they will no doubt come into contact
with our very words, feelings - and thoughts tonight.
(where I was) By coincidence, the camp was adjacent to a cemetery, which made the
challenges even more intense.
(who you were with) At 2 a.m., a deafening alarm woke everyone up and the game was
ordered to start. We were a group of 7- to 8-year-olds, and we had to work with each
other under the silence and darkness of the night.
(and explain why you were scared) At one station, the challenge was to solve
cryptograms inside the cemetery. We were very focused on the cryptograms, but I
freaked out when I felt something fishy behind my back. I turned around and jumped
out of my skin when saw a person in an outfit full of blood. I screamed and passed out.
Being unconscious, I have no clue what happened after that, but I remember coming
round at my house. My friends told me that the “ghost” had to bring me home. This may
be an absurd story, but it is a night I will never forget my whole life.
1. To imprint someone’s memory with little/much to remember: làm cho ai
nhớ/không nhớ nhiều.

Example: He passed out and came round after that just 5 minutes.
Anh ấy ngất xỉu, và tỉnh lại sau đó chỉ 5 phút.
PART 3: FRIGHTEN PEOPLE
(Give a direct answer to the question) Well, people get scared when they encounter
situations beyond their comfort zone, or from unexpected frightening, dangerous things.
(Explain your reason or reasons) Scientifically, the part of our brain responsible for
registering fear is the amygdala, and when a person sees something that frightens them,
their amygdala activates other regions of the brain, thus signaling the potential dangers.
(Give an example (often a personal example)) Whether you jump at the sight of a spider
or work up a sweat at the mere mention of getting on an airplane, fears and phobias
abound.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Personally, it all comes down to the individual's
startle response, which means that somebody is just more susceptible to fears than
others. (Explain your reason or reasons) In combination with the role of previous life
experience, genetic differences between people contribute to the extent to which they
will feel anxiety or even post-traumatic stress in response to a frightening experience.
(Give an example (often a personal example)) These reasons may partly explain why
some people cannot stand the prospect of watching a horror movie while others enjoy
this kind of film.
(Give a direct answer to the question) When put in a serious, alarming situation, one
should try to remain calm and composed as much as possible, which helps the mind
function well and efficiently. (Explain your reason or reasons) Once you can think
critically, you can handle the problems and gradually get used to or overcome their
fears. (Explain the opposite or alternative) If the person is too intimidated to face the
threat himself, he can ask for help from people nearby or family members and
trustworthy friends. Besides, some people find that complementary therapies or
exercises, such as relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, or tai chi, help them to deal
with their anxiety.
(Give a direct answer to the question) I don’t think so. Actually, older people,
especially parents, tend to scare kids more often for different purposes. (Explain your
reason or reasons) Kids are more prone to freaking out because their level of emotional
control is not fully developed as compared to adults. (Give an example (often a personal
example)) Sometimes, to protect kids, older people tend to scare them. When a mother
tells her children about the deadly danger of touching a hot vessel, it is because she
wants them to remain unharmed. The moment that fear is instilled within the kids, they
try to take their decisions more cautiously.
Is it OK to frighten others?
(Give a direct answer to the question) I think it depends. (Explain your reason or
reasons) People usually frighten others to make fun of or surprise them, and the intention
of which is quite benign. (Explain the opposite or alternative) In extremely rare cases
where people have literally been "scared to death" after a surge of adrenaline and other
chemicals causes the heart to malfunction, scaring people is not something for fun.
Vocabulary:
comfort zone [expression]: a situation in which you feel comfortable and in which your
ability and determination are not being tested: vùng an toàn
Eg: Rock climbing pushes many people beyond their comfort zones.
genetic [adj]: belonging or relating to genes (= parts of the DNA in cells) received by
each animal or plant from its parents: có tính di truyền
Eg: There are tests which can establish a baby's genetic endowment.

that you have thought seriously about something, considering what is good and what is
bad about it: một cách nghiêm túc

critically.
Eg: They were intimidated into accepting a pay cut by the threat of losing their jobs.
instill [v]: to put a feeling, idea, or principle gradually into someone’s mind, so that it
has a strong influence on the way the person lives: truyền thụ, thấm nhuần
benign [adj]: pleasant and kind; not harmful or severe: cả tin, lành, dễ chịu, không ác ý
malfunction [v]: to fail to work or operate correctly: hoạt động không tốt
(why you had it) The doctor gave me antibiotics because he/she thought that they
would help me to recover from the disease as quickly as possible. Having said that, I was
aware of the risks of overusing antibiotics – that my body will respond less to medicines
the more antibiotics I take. So, keeping that in mind, I stopped taking the drugs as soon
as I felt that it would be ok to let my body heal naturally.
(and how you felt) After 3 days of medicine, my throat felt a lot better, but it took more
than 2 weeks for my throat to feel normal again. I am now aware that it is essential for
me to steer clear of unhealthy substances and chemicals so that I do not come down
with tonsillitis too often. Otherwise, treating it will become a lot more complicated.
PART 3:
1. Do you agree that medicine is harmful?
Honestly speaking, I do not think so. Medicine, besides its side effects, has played a
vitally important role in maintaining the world’s population. Without medicine, hardly
any diseases, especially infectious ones, could be totally cured or under control.
2. What do think of buying medicine online?
Buying medicine online may be two-edged. A wider variety of medications and
chemicals can be found online, but their quality cannot be cleared and ensured to be
suitable for use. In my opinion, one should not purchase medicine online unless they
cannot find any pharmacy that offers what they need.
3. In your opinion, why do some people do not like taking medicine?
Regarding kids, most of children would find it hard to take medicine due to its bitter
taste. Also, in case the size of a tablet is too big, it is difficult for children to swallow it.
Regarding adults, some might try to minimise the use of drugs as much as possible
because they hold a belief that the more medicine they take, the more they will be
resistant to its effects.
1. Side effect (n): tác dụng phụ.
Example: Does this drug have any side effects?
Thuốc này có tác dụng phụ gì không?
2. Infectious (adj): có tính truyền nhiễm.
Example: After the 21-day isolation period, Ebola survivors are no longer infectious.
Sau 21 ngày cách ly, những người sống sau bệnh Ebola không còn có thể gây nhiễm nữa.
3. To be under control (phrase): có thể kiểm soát được.
Example: It seems that the disease is now under control.
Dường như là dịch bệnh đã có thể kiểm soát được rồi.
4. Two-edged (adj): hai mặt.
Example: "That was amazingly generous of you!" "Well, what do you mean by that two-
edged comment, - are you saying I'm usually mean?"
“Bạn thực sự tốt với tớ đó!” – “Bạn nói câu 2 mặt như vậy là có ý nghĩa như nào – có
phải bạn đang nói tôi bình thường hay ác độc lắm hả?”
5. To find it hard/difficult to do sth (phrase): thấy làm cái gì đó khó.
Example: I found it hard to get an A in the exam.
Tôi thấy việc lấy được điểm A trong bài thi này khá khó.
6. To hold a belief (phrase): tin rằng.
Example: We used to hold a belief that ghosts were real when we were kids.
Chúng tôi từng tin rằng ma là có thật lúc còn bé.
43. Describe a time when you borrowed something from your family or a friend.
You should describe
- What you borrowed
- Who you borrowed it from
- What you borrowed it for
- And explain why it was useful to you
Answer:
To be honest, I can recall many occasions when I had to borrow important things from
someone else. I’ll talk about when my father lent me 2 million VND (what you borrowed).
First, I asked my mother for the loan, but she was on a tight budget. Therefore, I ended up
borrowing from my father, who gave me the money as if money was no object (who you
borrowed it from). After finishing the National Exams, myself and another friend planned
to run a business, which was to sell milk tea. I remember that, last year, I convinced by my
friend who came up with the idea of making milk tea to save money for our trip to
Singapore. We were struggling with the stall in the beginning. Each day, the store
continued on track, and we gradually earned a profit. Within a month, I was able to return
the money that I borrowed from my father. The moment he received the money from me,
he seemed a bit surprised. I explained to him how we earned it. He told me that he was
quite astonished that our little stall eventually saw the light of success. (what you borrowed
it for).
I was over the moon to tell him how we worked together to make it a success. I also showed
my gratitude and mentioned that, if not for his money, I could not have had the chance to
fulfill my dream, which was traveling to Singapore. Numerous other times, I borrowed
books, laptops, music players, money, CDs, and so on from my friends and relatives. But
the 2 million VND that I borrowed from my father was quite memorable, and I am lucky
that I decided to borrow it from my father for a good reason. (and explain why it was
useful to you)
VOCABULARY HIGHLIGHTS:
Example: He is on a tight budget, don’t ask him to hang out with us.
Example: Having failed for several times, he finally saw the light of success.
PART 3:
1. What will you do if people do not return the money they borrow from you?
If the amount of money is not too big and the person is underprivileged, I will not ask
for a return anyway. However, I will definitely keep asking for the return and bothering
him if the amount of money is large. If that person does not seem to want to return the
money, I will have to confide in the police.
2. Why are people embarrassed when they borrow money from others?
People feel embarrassed when borrowing money due to some reasons. First, they feel
that their financial situation is not as good as others, as a result, the thought of being at a
lower level arises. Second, it can be hard for them to ensure when they can return the
money, which is another reason why borrowing money may make them feel not
comfortable.
3. What do you think of the sharing economy?
I believe that although the sharing economy seems to be working now in the age of
technology. However, it is expected that “the gig economy” is going to overtake sharing
economy as it is believed to be more sufficient and effective in meeting the demands of
customers and raising living standards.
4. Why do some people like to borrow things instead of buying them?
People prefer to borrowing to buying as they believe that the things that they would like
to borrow will not be necessary all the time and it is a waste of money to buy them. For
example, if one only needs to use a laptop once or twice a month, it is not worth
spending a small fortune buying a laptop.
1. Underprivileged (adj): kém may mắn (về mặt tài chính)
Example: Children from an
underprivileged family background are statistically more likely to become involved
in crime.
Trẻ con trong những gia đình kém may mắn, theo thống kê, thường dễ rơi vào con đường
tội phạm hơn.
2. To confide in (phrasal verb): tin tưởng.
Example: She's nice, but I don't feel I can confide in her.
Cô ấy tốt thật, nhưng tôi không nghĩ mình nên tin tưởng cô ấy.
3. To arise (verb): nổi lên.
Example: When a thought arises in the mind, it is not easy to get rid of it.
Khi một suy nghĩ rôi lên trong đầu, nó không dễ để bị gạt bỏ.
4. Sufficient (adj): đủ
Example: This recipe should be sufficient for five people.
Công thức nấu ăn này sẽ đủ phần 5 người.
5. To spend a small fortune (idiom): trả nhiều tiền.
Example: You'll have to spend a small fortune in legal fees if
you decide to sue for compensation.
Bạn phải trả nhiều tiền cho lệ phí nếu bạn quyết định đòi tiền bồi thường.
And explain why it was the best gift/ present you have ever received.
Answer: As a student, that was a long unexpected gift that my principal gave me and till
now it’s the best gift I have ever received.
VOCABULARY HIGHLIGHTS:
Example: He made his parent proud by passing the test with flying colors.
Example: She was over the moon when her boyfriend came up with a ring.
Example: She was assigned as the new Deputy Headmaster in our university.
Example: Wearing Ao Dai on Monday is a must for female students since it’s a school
assembly.
Example: They found themselves flying with joy when their son got admitted to FTU.
PART 3:
Yes, I totally agree that children should be given financial education, including pocket
money management. As children learn to spend or save wisely, they will likely become
smart consumers in the future. Plus, being taught about the value of money can promote
a sense of appreciation and responsibility, which can prevent future overspending or
even running into debt.
What do you think of the saying love of money is the root of all evil?
Personally, I disagree with that opinion. There’s no problem with monetary aspirations,
such as becoming a billionaire or pursuing investment opportunities. In fact, people with
serious financial problems are statistically more likely to commit crimes than the
wealthy. If we properly understand the role of money and learn to avoid manipulation
and temptation, we can avoid any wrongdoing.
Definitely. Many people say children are too young to learn about money, but I think
having the right mindset about monetary issues early in life has multiple benefits. Firstly,
it helps children appreciate what they have and avoid unreasonable demands. Secondly,
children will likely be shielded from monetary temptation when they realize money is
not their end goal. This not only increases their own safety but also gives parents a sense
of security knowing their children are independent and wise spenders.
In your country, do parents give children money for doing the housework?
It depends. Some parents provide monetary reward for their children after they complete
household chores as a way to educate them about financial issues. Others, like mine,
however, do not because doing housework is considered one of our responsibilities. They
apply other methods to teach lessons related to money, such as letting children go
shopping when they have to decide what to buy with a limited amount of money.
Weddings are a typical occasion when people send money as presents. A traditional
wedding party in Vietnam often includes inviting a large number of guests, many of
which may be distant relatives. As a result, they may not know what the bride and
groom really desire, so gifting money is a practical way to congratulate the couple. Apart
from that, people also send money to pay tribute at funerals. This can also act as a
means of support for families in sorrow.
45. Describe a historic era you are interested in
You should say
- when was this era
- how you learned about it
- what it was famous for
- and explain why you are interested in this era

Từ vựng thuộc chủ đề Education
1. to cover a lot of ground
Meaning: to deal with much information and many facts.
Example: The history lecture covered a lot of ground today.
2. face-to-face learning
Meaning: to study in the traditional way, with the teacher present in the room
Example: Face-to-face learning motivates students and encourages interaction with

Example: I believe that the transmission of knowledge is more effective in face-to-face
interaction with teachers rather than online learning.
4. to have a good grasp of something
Meaning: to understand a problem deeply and completely
Example: Children who begin to learn a foreign language in primary school are usually
able to have a good grasp of the new language quickly.
I’m not very good at teaching. However, I was once successful at teaching my nephew a
new skill: reading.
I started trying to teach my nephew to read about a year ago, having him sound out the
titles of books before we read them, having him sound out words within the books here
and there, and following along with my finger so he’d be able to see where we were.
However, it didn’t work. He was constantly frustrated, wanting to get to the fun part, and
it seemed like we never made any forward progress. I mentioned this to my friend, who
happens to be a primary teacher. She lent me some books thatcame highly recommended,
with repeating patterns (“I see the cat.” “I see the dog.” “I see the bird.”) paired with
pictures that help little readers grasp the meaning of the story. The words and pictures
stuck in my nephew’s mindand his reading moved on by leaps and boundsin a matter
of weeks. The books made him feel good about himself – they moved him forward
incrementally, because they were designed to make kids feel confident in their abilities
while gradually introducing new concepts. I’m glad that my nephew approached reading
for enjoyment, not as a task he must do without fun or excitement.

Part 3
Obviously, humans are curious by nature. Besides, most people do new things because
of their thirst for the unknown and the unseen. Practically, first-hand experience never
fails to offer new insights and perspectives. Trying something new will enliven our
seemingly repetitive routine. However, there are some other people as well who are
reluctant to do new things and are introvert by nature.
2. What problems can people have when they try new activities for the first
time?
Well, certain problems will crop up when people try new things for the very first time. It
is usually expected that there would be some challenges for anything to be done for the
first time, and it is important to take sensible precautions. One’s unfamiliarity and
inexperience can sometimes lead to failure, injuries or accidents when people decide to
take up sport, for example. Yet, more often than not, noviceswill get better with time.
3. Do you think it’s best to do new things on your own or with other people?
Why?
I think this varies from person to person. Some people like to do things on their own in
order to meet different people and extend their social network, or maybe to experience
the activity by themselves. Other people only do things with their friends or family
because they feel more comfortable in the company of others. In my case I don’t mind,
I’ll try something new on my own or with friends if they are interested in doing it too.
4. What kinds of things do children learn to do when they are very young? How
important are these things?
When children are young, they mostly learn through the actions and reactions of their
parents and family members. Appropriate social practices from their family will enable
children to establish long-lasting relationships and good behaviour. On the other hand, if
children are neglected at any early age, they will be slow to pick up vital skills such as
walking, speaking and literacy.
5. Do you think children and adults learn to do new things in the same way?
How is their learning style different?
Personally, I think children and adults have different learning styles. Children have much
less fear and they just try anything new without worrying about the result. As adults, we
are much more rational and tend to consider things carefully before doing them. The
benefits, risks or opportunities involved are always taken into account. Meanwhile,
children have a much more adventurous spirit naturally and are eager to experience new
things
6. Some people say that it is more important to be able to learn new things now
than it was in the past. Do you agree or disagree with that? Why?
Well, I disagree. We should always learn new things in life. Maybe nowadays it’s more
important to learn new things quickly, faster than before, because the pace of life and
rate at which new things are introduced is increasing, thanks to technology and science.
Without the desire to adapt to changes, we will lag behind in the rat race and our
personal development will suffer as well. Thereby, capacities should be increased to
learn about new things and this is crucial for everyone, I believe.

E.g. Anyone engaging in an extreme sport must take sensible precautions and seek
expert advice

E.g: Housework is never finished, because there are always some repetitive chores to
do.
Eg: Bob admits his relative unfamiliarity with fixing electrical appliances.
7. company [noun]: the fact of being with somebody else and not alone: sự dồng
hành
Eg: Now that the problem has been identified, appropriate action can be taken.
Eg: She picked up a little French when she was on holiday in Paris.
10. rational [adjective]: (of a person) able to think clearly and make decisions
based on reason rather than emotions: lý trí

11. (to) take sth into account [expression]: to consider particular facts, circumstances,
etc. when making a decision about something : cân nhắc, xem xét

- What it is
(What it is)
On my 18th birthday, I was gifted with a Dell laptop, and ever since it has been
indispensable to me. I received it about a year ago, and the laptop is still in good shape.
I had very basic knowledge in computers, but after I got my laptop, I acquired a wider
range of knowledge and skills. The laptop is black and thin with a 16-inch display, and it
weighs less than a kilo. I usually spend 2-3 hours daily on my laptop, and it has been
very helpful for me to learn graphic design and the AutoCAD software I am currently
working on.
The laptop was from my parents, so it is really special to me. Recognizing my passion
for computers, they set aside money and bought it for me when I turned 18. Because
they did not know much about technology, they did a lot of research to find the best
laptop for my needs. I still remember the feeling of receiving this meaningful present,
which filled me with surprise and gratitude.
This gift is very important for me. In today’s world, knowledge of computing and the
related skills are really vital, and that’s why it has been a valuable gift for me. Moreover,
the laptop has been quite handy. I can search the Internet, get help with my studies, and
learn lots of new things. On the Internet I can communicate with my friends and
relatives easily. Needless to say, the laptop also helps me a lot with my higher studies as
well as the career I am pursuing, which is computer engineering. I think this will still
be a very useful device for many years to come.
(Give a direct answer to the question) We buy things with the hope that possessing
certain things will fulfill us, and for a short time they really do, but the novelty wears off
quickly, and then we are on to the next thing. (Explain your reason or reasons) Some
consumers are also trying to display their wealth and financial success by buying and
showing off expensive things. Under the influence of marketing companies, few people
are sensible enough to withstand the temptation to purchase things. (Give an example
(often a personal example)) For example, people who buy clothes they don’t wear tend
to focus on how much money they saved rather than what it cost.
(Give a direct answer to the question) Yes, undoubtedly. (Explain your reason or
reasons) In this day and age, consumption plays an important role in the determination
of income, output and employment in a country. (Give an example (often a personal
example)) In fact, the main reason for every productive activity is that people consume
goods and production is done for consumption, which constitute economic
activities. Minimum wage and the imposition of taxes are determined by the government
considering the consumption requirements of the public. Besides, businesses use
consumer spending data in their supply and demand economic calculations. Supply and
demand helps businesses produce goods or services at the most favorable consumer
price points.
What should parents do when their children ask for things their friends have?
(Give a direct answer to the question) First and foremost, I think parents should try to
take their children’s demand into consideration. (Explain your reason or reasons) It is
important to figure out whether the child really needs something or is just simply
pestering, luring soft-hearted moms and dads to buy them what their friends have.
(Give an example (often a personal example)) For example, when kids are envious of
the trendy bags female peers have, they can ask for things that are unreasonably
expensive, and once they get what they want, the desire for the item disappears. (Explain
the opposite or alternative) Another approach parents could adopt is to teach children
financial management skills to save money for things they want.
(Give a direct answer to the question) What young people want to buy is dependent on
their cultural environment and perspectives on materialism. (Explain your reason or
reasons) I would say the majority of fancy technological devices such as phones and
laptops to be constantly updated. Another expense among the young is food, especially
fast food. (Explain the opposite or alternative) For others, especially girls, accessories,
cosmetics, and clothing hold endless appeal, which reflects the increasing popularity of
beauty industry.
48. Describe a time that you had to change your plan/ changed your mind
Two years ago, I was on a trip to Thailand with my cousins until we had to change our
plans at the last minute due to bad weather conditions.
In fact, we were in Phuket that day. Everything was on track. The weather was forecast
to be perfect and we decided to pay a visit to Koh Phi Phi Island, a holiday resort
which is one of the must-visit islands in the world. I was really excited about this trip
until the local authorities made an announcement that there would be a tropical storm
coming by in 2 days and Phuket would be heavily affected by the storm. Then, we faced
the decision whether to stay there and wait until the storm passed by or to book a flight
back home.
After a lot of discussion, we ended up putting off our plan and returning to Vietnam.
The next day, we arrived at the airport as early as possible since the storm was predicted
to sweep the island sometime that night. Luckily, we were able to buy last-minute plane
tickets and got home safe and sound.

expected to be open in the near future, perhaps next month.
I usually go out walking in the evening every day and sometimes play some outdoor
games, but the outdoor activity that I did for the first time last month was something
different. At that time, after completing the arduous end-of-term examination, I was
invited by a friend to go climbing on a mountain. He's been doing it for about six months
and I had asked him about it once as I was curious whether mountain climbing requires a
lot of stamina. I accepted his request without hesitation and even bought some suitable
clothes for the sport.
During the journey to the highest mountain in our province, my friend accompanied me
all the time. It was great fun, although I was a little scared at first, apprehensive to be
exact. My special instructor was really experienced and I started practising on the ground
and very low on the wall to gain my confidence so there was very little risk. However, the
reality seemed not that easy, as the route to reach the mountain peak is in twist and turns,
we almost felt the terminal point was approaching but it was endless. I got a little
exhausted and had to lean against a tree. My friend encouraged me to hold on, take deep a
breath and only think about the mountain peak to continue to climb.
There’s nothing quite like standing on top of a mountain, with the clouds and the rest of
the world stretched out below you. It is so challenging, refreshing, and wonderful. When
I am in the mountains, it relieves me of all the tension from my schoolwork and daily life.
I can chat with my friends, breathe fresh air, and appreciate different plants. When I reach
the top of a mountain, I cannot help but feel as if I were a king. I have a panorama of the
world below me, and I am always fascinated by the beautiful scenery. Though undeniably
exciting, mountain climbing requires a level of advance preparation and physical fitness
that few other types of sports can equal. I have more confidence in myself after
conquering such a demanding sport for the very first time.

You should say:
- What the equipment was
- What the problem was
- What you did after it was broken
- And how you felt about it
(What the equipment was)
However, the problem popped up quite unexpectedly. Being portable and slim does not
guarantee that there would not be any incident involved. When I was sitting in the cafe to
complete my thesis, I took it out of my backpack and was about to lay it on the desk with
my hand. Somehow, I kind of overestimated my carefulness, and then one side of my
Macbook Air just hit right on the wooden corner of the desk. When I realized it, it had
already made a dent on my laptop. When I opened the lid, the display wasn’t functioning
well. What a disconcerting incident!
(What you did after it was broken)
Without hesitation, I rushed to the Apple chain store to have it fixed. The staff told me
that the display was broken and should be replaced. Fortunately, it wasn’t the hard disk,
otherwise, the information stored there would be damaged, which is the worst scenario
for me. Though it cost me quite a lot, I still accepted the charge.

You should say:
- What it was and to whom it belonged
- How you found it
- How you felt about it
(What it was and to whom it belonged)
It was about 10 years ago but I still remember the occasion vividly. At the time, I was
running some errands for my mother, and stopped by a coffee shop to grab a cup of
mocha on my way home. As I walked out the door and to my bike, I noticed a big fat wallet
lying on the ground just off the curb. I picked it up, gave a quick look around to see if there
was anyone nearby who might have dropped it, and then pondered what to do next.
As I put it, the way I came across the wallet was so incidental. Young and inexperienced
as I was at that time, I felt really nervous in handling this situation appropriately. More
unfortunately, there was no information card or any details about the owner inside the
wallet. After waiting for 20 minutes for the owner to come back for the wallet, I decided
to take it to the police station staff and told them where I found it. I really hope the owner
was reunited with it after calling the station’s lost and found center.

(How you got to know this person) We were on the same trip called the Temasek
Overseas Outreach Programme in order to teach English to the children and give the
workers a hand with concreting the school yard. We were in the same group, therefore,
we had the chance to talk to each other a lot. When first seeing him, it sprang to my
mind that he was someone who never had the need to communicate much with others as
he was one of the top performers in class as well as looked quite nice. At first, this was
pretty much true, yet, the more we worked with each other, the more we got to know
one another.
(And explain how you feel about this person) It was quite lucky to meet him. Andre was
the star of the show although he didn’t talk much. Everyone praised him for his
excellence in his studies, sports, instruments as well as his physical appearance. If I have
the chance to visit Singapore, I will definitely meet him again.

(What the food is) I am going to tell you about the food that we eat on the most
important festival of the Vietnamese, as well as other ethnic groups influenced by the
Chinese culture, which is the Lunar New Year’s Day. The food is called “Mứt dừa” -
Vietnamese for sweetened coconut flesh.
(On which occasion people eat it) People, especially those in Ben Tre province, which is
the capital of Vietnamese coconuts, produce sweetened coconut flesh all year round, yet
this kind of food is only consumed nationwide during Tet – Lunar New Year. The
sweetened coconut flesh is more of a snack to be honest, because it cannot fill your
stomach and it is an indispensable part of a red tray called “the tray of togetherness”,
which comprises different kinds of sweetened fruits, seeds.
(Why it is used on that occasion) Although the question of the precise time when the
production and consumption of the food became a tradition during Tet is yet to be
historically answered, Mứt dừa has been used for quite a long time. The use of
sweetened coconut flesh, as well as other sweetened foods, is rooted in the belief that
sweet foods will pave the way to a sweet year ahead.
(Say what you think about the food) No words can describe how much I love the food.
As a big fan of sugar and coconut, while the food consists of both of these two, I am
always the first person to visit the house of my grandparents on the Lunar New Year’s
Day so that I can eat a lot of Mứt dừa, otherwise other kids will have it all.

(How you got to know each other) We got to know each other by chance. When just
being enrolled in the university, we had an unofficial meeting with peers who took up
residence in the school’s dormitory. Among a lot of people, we somehow were a lot
closer to each other than to the remaining members of those attending the meeting that
night. Afterwards, when the academic year kicked off, we went to school with each
other every morning. As time goes by, we are even closer to each other.
(What you want to work with her/him) Emma and I are relatively different in terms of
academic excellence. While I am confident with my knowledge about social sciences,
Emma shows that she can top the class in terms of logic and statistics. I admire Emma
because she can give in-depth and structured analyses when problems arise, which won
her the title of master at problem-solving in the last leadership camp of my university.
(And explain why you want you work with her/him) Due to being logical and
reasonable, as well as with her academic brilliance and openness to others, Emma is one
of the most ideal people with whom anyone in this world would like to study with. In the
first semester, we did not study with each other for exams. Yet, since the second
semester, we have started to review with each other in the exam season, after which I
could witness a significant change in my results.
Cuộc bầu cử quốc hội của Indonesia đã bắt đầu vào cuối tuần vừa rồi.
Bản nhạc đứng đầu mọi bảng xếp hạng trong 5 tuần.
(What your friend did) Emma, one of my best college friends, won the championship in
a debate in the last leadership camp of our school, which I really took pride in. It can be
said that this is her most triumphant achievement ever as she pushed herself to the limits
and went to great lengths to bring home the championship. Moreover, her victory also
says that nothing is impossible as along as one is willing to put in the effort and play to
your strengths.
(When she did it) Emma captured her maiden debate championship just 3 weeks ago
after the school had been holding its leadership camp for 11 consecutive years. This year,
the camp was divided into some different sections, one of which included debate battle
between classes. Emma joined in the debate battle for the first time in her college life
with such hesitation, yet she emerged as the champion of this area.
(Why you felt proud of what she/he had done) I regard Emma as my best college friend,
which is one of the reasons I took pride in her triumph. Another reason is that it never
crossed her mind that she would join the competition as Emma is the type of person
who does not talk much and is afraid of delivering public speeches. Yet, I can recognise
her outstanding ability in analysing problems and solving them, which made me
encourage her to go in for the competition as I really believed that she had what it took to
win the championship.
(and explain how you felt when this happened) As soon as the MC called Emma the
champion, the whole hall was surprised. I could have just bursted into tears as what
I had expected had finally come true.
4. Push oneself to the limits (phrase): cố gắng hết sức, lượt mọi giới hạn.
If you really want to know what you are capable of, push yourself to the limits.

56. Describe a thing that you bought but you do not use a lot.
- What it is
(What it is) Today, I would like to tell you about a thing that I regret buying because the
number of times I’ve used it is yet to reach 20. That thing is a printer. This is a laser
printer which took me roughly 100 USD and received a lot of positive reviews from
consumers back then.
(When you bought it) I made up my mind to purchase this printer 2 years ago after
mulling things over for more than a month because I was not sure whether it would be
of great use afterwards. When asking my parents if they could support me, they also
warned me of this. Yet, I finally decided to buy one, which was one of the worst
decisions I’ve ever made in my life.
(Why you bought it) I bought the printer when preparation for the IELTS test started to
intensify when a great number of documents and materials was in need such as mock
tests. Prior to the purchase, I had other people print for me, which made them feel a bit
imposed on and bothered. It sprang to my mind that the printer could be used to print
music sheets for my piano and organ practice after the test.
(And explain why you do not use it often) The printer is supposed to be used for my
studies as well as piano lessons. However, hardly had I passed the test with flying
colours when the preparation for the national examination came in, which meant that I
had little time to practice the piano while the documents needed for the national
examination were too much for my printer. Therefore, the printer has been of little use
until now, so the idea of selling it springs my mind.

(What the job is) Farming has long been a traditional job of most Vietnamese families,
and my grandparents are not an exception. They used to be farmers before not being able
to continue working any longer. Farming, for the majority of Vietnamese people,
comprises activities such as cultivating, seeding, growing and harvesting rice plants.
(How long they have done this) To the best of my knowledge, my grandparents started
to join their parents, who were my great grandparents, as early as being 15 or 16 years
old and kept working until they reached 60 years old. Their farming career came to a
close more than 20 years ago, when I was not even born. They passed their farms onto
some of my old aunts and uncles while their younger children, including my daddy,
entered the industrial workforce.
(Why they chose the job) This question should be more of a historical question to be
honest. Since Vietnam is too far away from the Western World where the first and
second industrial revolutions took place and was continuously fighting to protect our
sovereignty, more than 90% of Vietnamese people were peasants by the early 20th
century. Being born into a family with little educational background, my grandparents
were left with no choice but to work on farms.
(And say what you think about their job) I am more than proud of my grandparents’ job
despite it being less respected because owing to such a great effort they put in, all of my
aunts and uncles had the chance to enter education, despite dropping out sooner or later.
Yet, this made them have a high regard for the importance of education so that our
generation could have the chance to pursue tertiary education.

(What the house includes) As a person with a diminutive frame, I would also love to
live in a small house without any floors. Yet, it should comprise necessities as well as
other kinds of other supplementary things like a pool or a garden. 30% of my house
should be covered by greenery because it will calm down the temperature significantly
when heatwaves, along with high humidity, affect the region during the summer.
(How it looks) The walls will be painted in white, which makes my house look a lot
brighter and reduces the absorption of heat. Also, the doors will be all glassy because
there is nothing more elegant than glass. I follow the minimalism of the Japanese, and I
am lazy, so there will be nothing much inside my house apart from a kitchen, creamy
lights, and some very essential necessities. There is no question of paintings or
complicated furniture being in my house.
(And explain why you like to live in this house) From what I’ve said, there are two main
reasons. This house is located in the city of Danang, which is a coastal city with beautiful
beaches and mountains. The house is built in deference to Japanese minimalism and I’m
a couch potato who does not want to spend time on tidying up the house too frequently.

(When it started to improve) The restoration of this world-class church has taken place
for 2 years and this main restoration project is forecast to last more than 4 years, meaning
that the church will continue undergoing restoration for another 2 years. A lot of efforts
have been put in campaigns calling for funds and until now, their efforts have paid
dividends as more than 80% of the amount of fund needed for the project has been
raised, exceeding 70 billion VND, which is equivalent to 2.33 million USD, which is a
massive number.
(How it has improved) From the outside, it can be seen that the project is on the right
track, yet at a slow speed. What we can see now is that all the marks and dirt on the
walls of the cathedral have been removed, giving back the original beauty to the outer
part of the cathedral. Moreover, all the plants that grow on the roof of the church, which
are the result of the accumulation of dirt and water, have also been eliminated.
(How you feel about the improvement) I would like to give credit to those in charge of
the restoration project as it poses such a great challenge in terms of funding as well as
finding the way to restore the church without changing its original architecture and
design. And what they are doing proves that the likelihood of their expectations coming
true is positively high.
Tôi có rất nhiều thứ trong danh sách phải làm mà tôi chưa làm
Việc bạn được điểm cao trong kì thi mà không phải ôn bàn là điều không thể.
Today I would like to describe something I do to keep myself always fixated. For a very long
period of time, I have suffered great concentration issues and was not able to focus on one
thing for a long period of time. Until one day, a friend of mine introduced me to the experience
of playing a finger gyroscope to improve my attention span. The finger gyroscope was made
of high-grade material, which is durable and eco-friendly. At first sight, I didn’t think this
little thing would really work. It might be just another childish tool that could only fool kids
nowadays. Well, when he pinched it and blew it hard, the wings of the gyroscope began
running.
Whenever my work requires complete concentration, I play the finger gyroscope for about 5
minutes to be well-prepared to undertake the task. All you need to do when playing with this
toy is holding the spinner in one hand with the other hand spinning rapidly using small
continuous strikes with indefinite practice. What really amazed me was that it kept rotating
for a long time and seemed to go non-stop. Both of my eyebrows were captivated by this little
instrument. When playing this toy, I feel like performing feats that seem to defy gravity.

57. Describe something you do regularly that helps you work and study better
You should say:

- Where you do this activity
- Why you do this
(What the activity is)
Today I would like to describe something I do regularly to help me work more effectively,
which is meditation. Meditation is a simple practice available to all, which can reduce stress,
increase calmness and clarity and promote happiness. Despite my various attempts to discover
a way to better concentrate on my delegated work both at home and at office, I was still lagging
behind until I started meditating a year ago, as advice from my close friend. Since I adopted
this method, my work performance has been remarkably enhanced.
Actually, this activity does not take up a great amount of time, approximately 25-30 minutes
are enough for me to maintain the consistency of practicing it daily. It is very simple to do and
I just need to sit relaxed and focus my attention on my breath and on how the body moves with
each inhalation and exhalation. With mindfulness meditation, I train myself in remaining
aware of the present moment in a non-judgmental manner. Consequently, distractions are less
and less likely to sweep me away. Most often, I do it in my room in the morning and sometimes
in the office. The beauty of the meditation is that I can do it anywhere, anytime.
