DETERMINATION OF COEFFICIENT OF DISCHARGE OF

V-NOTCH WEIR

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this experiment, the group is tasked to determine the coefficient of discharge of a v-notch weir. It

is the same process as what have done in the previous experiment, but the only difference is instead of a

rectangular weir, a v-notch weir was used.

For the first experiment, the v-notch weir used was 90 degrees in angle. The head over the weir

was noted as the initial head. Note that the measuring device was not pointed, thus may result to error. By

opening the gate valve, the water level slowly increases. And by there, the velocity head just at the

upstream side of the weir was measured and noted as the final head. Taking the difference of final and

initial head, the total head was calculated. The actual flow rate discharge needs to be calculated by getting

the volume over the time.

By substituting the gathered values in the equation 𝑄𝑡 = 3 √2𝑔𝐿𝑒𝑓𝑓 𝐻 2, the theoretical flow rate

was calculated. This theoretical value will be then divided to the actual flow rate that was already converted

in m/sec. By then, the coefficient of discharge was acquired.
