There is a variation in measured soil resistivity of approx. 29.6% to 101.36% in any given direction. Since,
in a majority of the directions the variation of measured resistivity values was more than 30%, as per IS
3043 cl 36.6 the measured soil resistivity does not fit into uniform Soil Model and hence can be classified
as non-uniform soil.
Since the soil is non-uniform, multi-layer soil model as derived from the RESAP module of CDEGS software
for the measured values after applying moisture correction factor as per the curve given in IEEE 80 fig 17
is used to determine the multi-layer soil resistivity. Accordingly, the Earth mat is designed using CDEGS
software with Multi-Layer soil modeling.

2 Site Preparation condition :-Ensure all materials and accessories should be free from dust, scale
or oil. Surface should be cleaned thoroughly and tightness checks for each connection shall be
performed. Continuity of earth connection shall be checked for every link in the network.
Before starting the Earth mat installation, surface area to be levelled
Below mentioned factors shall be considered before installation of earth mat.
Climate condition: Dry weather will be preferable for execution of the earth mat installation work.
3. Methodology in Sequence
• Conducting of Soil Resistivity Test
• Final Design of Earth Mat on the basis of Soil Resistivity Value
• Execution of Earth Mat
• Combine Connection and Measurement of Combined Earth Resistance of Earth Mat.
Soil resistivity test will be done by Wenner4-Pin method for effective design of earth mat.
Please refer detailed methodology for Soil resistivity test.
The methodology proposed is based on information provided in contract documents (ODS &
OCS) and to the best of our knowledge. Exact work of Installation of Earth Mats shall be
formulated after approval of final drawings.

Exothermic Welding
Exothermic welding is a simple, efficient, high-quality metal joining process. It does not require
any other external energy and it is the best way for connecting the earth mat conductor.
1. Following accessories /tools are provided for making the exothermic welded joints
• Exothermic welding mould
• Welding powder
• Tool box.
Exothermic-welding Process.
• Clean the mould and materials to be welded. Clean the interior part of the mould carefully by
using soft brush.
• The dust, grease, oxide(rust) or other adhesive substances must be completely removed
from the surface of the objects which are to be welded (by using steel brush). The weld operation can
repeat after the welded materials are get cleaned.
• Drying: remove the moisture from the mould by using pre-heating tools (such as drying bins or
portable butane blowtorch).
• Position the materials to be welded into the mould (copper rod) and place the round plate
at the bottom of the reaction cavity.
• Pour the weld powder into the reaction cavity, then put some of the ignition powder on top of
the mould, the rest of the ignition powder will be put on the top of weld powder inside reaction
cavity.
• Close the mould, and then ignite the ignition powder. The reaction time only lasts in a few
seconds.

100% welded joint shall be visual inspected only and vendor is responsible for the checking of
welded joints. The welding shall generally be done in conformity with IEC60364-5-54.
According to IEC60364-5-54, the jointing technique should be such that it prevents
degradation due to mechanical, chemical and electro-chemical effects.
Shifting and Placement of the Earth Mat Sections
The above Earth Mat sections shall be fabricated on the actual site location and shall be placed
one by one and joined together using exothermic welding as shown in the drawing. If any
precaution required shall be taken up in line with construction activity. Presently as per revised
drawing enough space is provided between earth mat and column footings & sumps as shown
in drawing. The earth mat shall be buried as per the NONO CRD Drawings of GC/MAPLE based
on the site conditions.
For installation of Earth Electrodes, 500q.mm stranded bare copper conductor in case of Main
Earth Mat (ASS) or 150 sq.mm stranded bare copper conductor in case of Clean Earth Mat of
required length as per NONO CRD Drawings is used. The same is directly buried in required
bore holes of 75 -100 mm dia., which shall be made by using Mechanical Augers. The hole will
be filled with soil after installation of vertical conductor and top 5 Meters of the bore hole shall
be filled with concrete.
Risers from Earth Mat shall be500 Sq.mm stranded Copper conductor, XLPE insulated cable in case
of Main Earth Mat & 185 Sq.mm stranded Copper conductor, XLPE insulated cable in case of
clean Earth Mat. It will run co-axially with Tinned copper sleeve. Risers shall come up along
the walls/columns of undercroft, up to 500 mm height above FFL up to the test point at
Undercroft level.

All risers will be as per the ODS clause no: 5.4.3.9.2 of part-2 Sec-VII and shall be brought
from the earth mat up through the basement floor or wall to each of the substation rooms,
communication Equipment room, SCS rooms and relay room and other equipment rooms at
Undercroft level as per actual site condition. At each earth riser cable entry through the base
slab, a tinned copper water stop sleeve shall be provided to prevent the ingress of water. The
Sleeve shall be coated with epoxy resin. Earth bars shall be complete with twin disconnecting
links.
The risers shall be joined with earth mat by exothermic welding. Splicing of the riser cable is
done suitably up to length which is to be joined as given in drawing. For test link, it is spliced
to accommodate the lug of its size. Typical details of Test links with Copper Lugs and U-Clamp
are shown in the NONO CRD Drawing. The riser cable shall be taken through 60mm Dia & 50
mm Tinned copper sleeve coated with epoxy resin for Main & Clean earth mat respectively.
Sealant Compound shall be filled in Tinned copper sleeve after installation of riser cable. The
portion of cable exposed shall be protected through a conduit / bend projected along the wall
over screed the conduit bend shall be sealed with water proof material after installation of
cables.
Riser shall be fixed to the rebar by tie wire and make sure that no gap with shuttering if
shuttering is in place. Make sure that riser shall be covered by styro foam or any other material
in order to prevent the concrete in side conduit. Clean the riser after the removal of formwork.
In case any riser found cut/ theft above the base slab in future, the concrete around the riser
min 150 mm length to be broken. After exposing the riser 150mm , joint shall be made.

After casting of base slab & during further stage of installation, testing & commissioning,
measurement of earth mat resistance will be done between the reference electrode and the
particular riser to be measured. An official invitation shall be provided to GC/MMRC
representatives and all concerned system wide contractors and measurement values to be
recorded jointly within the Test Result Format as attached herewith.
On completion of activities listed above earth filling and compaction shall be done by civil
section to achieve the desired level and condition for casting of slab.
Earth ground electrodes and risers shall be connected to the earth mat as per details in the NONO CRD
Drawing. Both Power Mats shall be interconnected in the undercroft level by using strips which shall
be taken from 2 separate risers from each earth mat.

Night Work: Area Lighting is needed for safety; productivity; security. The Construction
regulation requires that every working place, approach, dangerous opening and lifting
appliance be adequately and suitably lighted.
Lux meters are used to check levels of illumination. Illumination shall be measured at the
actual work place not at the light fitting. There are factors that can affect the efficiency of
lighting.
Pep talks (Daily Briefing): Site engineer shall be carryout the tool box talk at site explaining
