The Philippines began with Spanish rule in the early 1500s.

1521- the arrival of Ferdinand Magllan in mactan, Cebu

1542- spanish expedition to the archipelago bestows the name “felipinas” in honor Prince ( and Later
became king) King Philip II of Spain

1568- Philip II empowers Miguel Lopez de LEgazpi to stablish cities and towns and grant his followers
encomiendas

1571- Legazpi conquers maynilad, an outpost of the brunei sultanate. King Philip grant the new
settlement, Manila, the royal title of city.

1750- Malacanang Place was built in Manila,it has become a prominent symbol of metonym for the
office, and official residence of the president.
