Leclanche cell:

 This battery there is a jar filled with ammonium chloride


solution as an electrolyte. A zinc rod is anode, Carbon rod is
cathode.

 Zinc anode undergoes oxidation as it losses electrons.

 There is a reduction process happening in ammonium


solution:

 Theoretically the output of a zinc carbon battery is not more


than 1.5 V.

 There are two types of zinc-carbon batteries:

 Leclanche Battery
 Advantages:
o The cost of this battery cell is quite low.
o It is easily available
 Disadvantages:
o The voltage falls rapidly.
o Energy density is quite low.
o It leaks.
 Zinc chloride Battery
 Advantages:
o Higher density available.
o It performs better at low temperature.
o Highly efficient with low leakage.
 Disadvantages:
o More sensitive to oxygen.
